Washington and Rochambeau rendezvous during the Yorktown Campaign, which ended #OnThisDay in 1781. Though more than 7,000 British troops surrendered in Yorktown, the Revolutionary War did not end until 1783 after Washington moved back to New York City, with the Peace of Paris signed by a British government installed largely as a result of Washington's victory.
.
Victory at Yorktown, however, brought Washington the increased political clout needed to avert a potential officers' rebellion at Newburgh, conduct the remainder of the war, and after a short retirement to Mount Vernon was the logical choice to oversee the Constitutional Convention and become the first President of the United States.

#OnThisDay in 1785, Sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon and his assistants leave @Mount_Vernon, headed back to France, where he will make this full-length marble statue of George Washington.
.
When the Marquis de Lafayette saw this statue he said, "That is the man himself." Today is still stands on the spot it was originally placed in 1796: the rotunda of the Capitol in Richmond, VA.

Imagine Washington walking down the streets of Philadelphia, checking this watch and making sure he was right on time ⏱
.
George Washington purchased several gold watches during his lifetime to assist him with keeping proper time. This watch - possibly purchased at Ephraim Clark's shop on Second Street in Philadelphia - admirably suited Washington's preference for well-crafted, neat and plain pieces.
.
George Washington Parke Custis writes, "So punctual a man delighted in always having about him a good timekeeper. In Philadelphia, the first president regularly walked up to his watchmaker's (Clarke, in Second street) to compare his watch with the regulator."

#OnThisDay in 1789, George Washington set out from New York to begin his tour of New England.
.
From October 15 to November 13, 1789, Washington travelled to nearly 60 towns starting from New York City, then the capital of the United States, through Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. .
From Washington’s perspective, it was a fact-finding and promotional tour; from the perspective of the people he visited, it was both a chance to celebrate and to advise their new president.

#OnThisDay in 1785 Martha Washington’s favorite niece, Frances (Fanny) Bassett, marries George Washington’s favorite nephew, George Augustine Washington, at @Mount_Vernon.
.
Bassett was very much a second daughter to Martha Washington whose daughter Patsy had died in 1773 at the young age of seventeen. When Fanny's mother died in 1777, Martha offered to take Fanny into the Washington household. She started living at Mount Vernon on a regular basis in the mid-1780s, and soon won the heart of George Augustine Washington. .
The couple made their home at Mount Vernon where they raised several children and helped George and Martha Washington manage the plantation and entertain the hundreds of guests who came to visit each year.

The weather today @Mount_Vernon isn't very different than it was 232 years ago. Here's Washington's full entry #OnThisDay in 1785:
.
"Tuesday 11th. Thermometer at 68 in the Morning—70 at Noon and 71 at Night.
.
A Very heavy fog until near 10 Oclock, with very little wind, from the Eastward. From thence till five P. M. it was tolerably clear; when it clouded again, & looked like rain.
.
Sowed more English grass Seed on All the ground that had been levelled, & Smoothed on the Lawn.
.
Began the foundation of the House at the Southwest Corner of the South Garden.
.
Mr. Dulany, Mr. Sanderson and Mr. Potts dined here and returned afterwards to Alexanda.
.
After dark it began to rain and continued to do so fast, more or less, all Night—which appeared to have washed all the Seeds (at least all the Chaff with its contents) which had been just sowed from the ground, and carried it to the lowest parts of it."

#DYK Washington inherited @Mount_Vernon in 1761? 🏡
.
George Washingon did not inherit the estate until after his elder half-brother Lawrence Washington passed away in 1752, and both of the intervening heirs had died.
.
Following the death of Lawrence's young daughter Sarah in 1754, Washington began renting Mount Vernon from Lawrence's widow, Ann, who had remarried and moved aware. The estate became George Washington's when Ann died in 1761. .
