Spinach & goat cheese omelette w/ herbs de Provence, shredded turnips & onions cooked in bacon fat, and some baby arugula w/ radish, avocado, dulse flakes & my favorite housemade creamy tahini dressing.

I've been a bit obsessed with watermelon radishes lately. Their vibrant color is such a nice contrast with all the greens and I love the added punch they bring. I think they'd be good fermented too. 😋
Being diligent to shop seasonally at the farmer's market has brought an unexpected element of joy & savoring, as well as the creative challenges to learn how to prepare new foods. The discovery is a lot of fun too. And right now I'm finding a lot of wonderful new delights each week at the @evolutionaryorganics stand!
Having transparency in where my food comes from, reducing or eliminating packaging, maximizing nutrient content and quality are all of great importance so I'm grateful to have access to plenty of fantastic markets around the city each week. CSAs are also great options, but I just really enjoy going through the market myself & taking everything in.

I started going to an awesome humane butcher a few months ago, s/o to @fleishers!, to try out different cuts of meat, introduce organs, & be better at eating the whole animal. Sustainable eating & operating practices are very important to me, as is quality

I'd come across info on methionine toxicity [from too much muscle meat] & the need for glycine, choline, betaine & folate rich foods to process/prevent it

My diet already included most of these nutrients with lots of dark leafy greens, whole eggs, and eating meat on the bone, but I found that I could be better about including more glycine sources

So I've made it a point to get bone-in, neck or shank cuts, save bones for bone broth, and may try out a grass fed gelatin or collagen powder. It's also expanded my cooking methods as braising is better for many of the alternative cuts, but being less popular you can get some great deals on seriously good [m]eats!

This is one of those books that should be required reading for the #schooloflife. A part of the operating manual for the bodies we inhabit. Because it turns out, magnesium is VITAL for life. The number of systems and cells that require magnesium is astounding. And due to mineral depletion in the soil, even eating traditionally magnesium rich foods isn't enough. So supplementation is pretty much necessary. Chronic stress and diets high in sugar & carbs also use it more quickly. A deficiency can lead to a myriad of issues, so when you're finally getting enough it's incredible the difference it makes! I'd had my blood tested a few times, but only 1% of magnesium is in the blood (serum) that's tested and is kept tightly regulated to prevent a heart attack so it's terribly inaccurate. You could get 'normal' results & be very deficient, so getting an RBC test instead of serum is more conclusive. Many magnesium supplements are poorly absorbed by the body and have a laxative effect in therapeutic doses. Dr. Carolyn Dean created a supplement that is readily absorbed at the cellular level & I've also found using ionic magnesium oil (magnesium chloride) helpful. Having struggled with adrenal fatigue and mineral & nutrient deficiencies for many years, it's been a process to rebuild with patience as my body is sensitive to too much at once & needs the right cofactors to be well supported. But it's so worth it!! I went to see my first integrative doctor here today. Had high hopes since apparently they're dual trained, but was disappointed once again by the lack of sound nutrition education. It's crazy to me the outdated information (which is also grossly influenced by the investments of pharmaceutical companies and outside interests) being taught in medical schools and the young practitioners who seem to think that their education involved static truths. I don't understand how you can be a doctor and not be curious and investigative. There's so much information readily available and the potential to radically change people's lives! A reminder of the necessity for diligence and not just blindly handing one's health over. It would be great if all doctor's were worthy of the trust they're often readily given, but they're not. The healthcare system in the US is massively broken. And if you go to a doctor who thinks the USDA food pyramid has any value RUN FOR THE DOOR!! All five of the doctors (including two specialists) I've seen this year were pretty much a waste of my time, aside from the information I gleaned from labs.
