In high school in suburban Long Island, I๏ธ had college fairs starting in 9th grade. A PSAT was scheduled for 10th graders. I took the SAT twice my junior year and then took the ACT for good measure. I met with my guidance counselor repeatedly to discuss college applications and choices.
In high school in rural PA, Bryan decided on his own to take the SAT. No one spoke to him about it. His school didnโ€™t know where he could take one so he researched himself, paid, and drove himself there. He received a perfect score. But going to college means you have to have money or enough financial literacy and forward thinking to navigate scholarships and loans. So in his senior year Bryan did his research and drove himself to the local army recruitment center.
Bryan completed his college applications five years later in Iraq during his second deployment. He returned from that second deployment in the spring of โ€˜08, was honorably discharged that summer, and started Columbia that fall (despite the university gently urging him to take a gap year to give himself time to adjust back.) He graduated in 2012.
Less than 50% of veterans use their GI Bill. In the spring of 2018, Bryan will have completed his masters degree and will have spent every penny of his GI benefits. I am incredibly proud of his drive and accomplishments but also left stunned at the differences in our paths to education. My college trajectory started directly from high school. Bryan had to fight in and survive a foreign war on his. Higher education should be accessible to all those who want to pursue it - not just a privilege for the few. #veteransday

Iโ€™m grateful that in the constant, grinding chaos that is life in NYC this is my running route.
I am also grateful for friends (@lexxa44) who push me to run with them even when Iโ€™d rather sit on my couch. ๐Ÿ›‹๐Ÿฅ” #prospectpark #runningviews

Posting this in dedication to the amazingly brave woman I met last night in the subway station. Her partner was shouting at her and advancing in her face so much that he had her and their 3 year old son backed up only half a foot from the platform edge. I am grateful to the 3 other people who joined me in trying to intervene even though none of us had a clue what we were doing or how we could possibly help. He repeatedly and exasperatedly told us how he has never hit her. After 15 more minutes of shouting, crying and strangers frantically trying to move him away, he stalked off to catch a different train. She and I rode the subway a few stops together and we talked about our shared experiences. As she put it, "He doesn't have to hit me. The things he says to me hurt so much worse." We got off at the same subway stop and began walking to the street level where a friend was waiting to pick her up. As we did so, a familiar voice began shouting at us. Her partner had followed us halfway across the borough even though when we last saw him he was heading to a train going in the opposite direction. She quickly went street level to meet her friend and he began trying to assure me that everything she said about him were lies. She's always been ungrateful. She isn't happy with anything he does. I began to walk away as he became angrier. I am a bitch, a cunt who must-be-alone-no-man-would-want-you. He hopes I'm happy for breaking up their family. He never once, never ever would hit her.
