There's a crazy story behind this picture. Just up that road someone got murdered. Thankfully I sleep throughout the night no problem, cause it was right near our hostel

On the subject of skin whitening
This is merely my take on what I've seen in the media here in Cambodia and contrasting ideas with 'western' views.
Driving along the streets advertisements for alcohol, car companies, and food are plastered along the road side. The woman you notice resemble the ones you meet and see on the street. Yet there's one noticeable difference. The ads are white washed. You walk into a store and where here would normally be a vast selection of fruity lotions you see whitening creams, pastes, oils etc.. I did some research and apparently it's quite the problem here amounst youth and the older woman. And men.
In the west many woman fond it desirable to have golden tans , they use tanning beds or excessive sun exposure. Which can lead to skin cancer and early aging. Going back in time, tanning amoungst
Caucasians showed a sign of wealth. Quite the opposite in Cambodia. It symbolized coming from a poor family that spent their time in the sun, farming.
So why do woman, and men, across the globe seem to desire what their neighbors have or look like. It's an odd thought but completely understandable.
I was talking with a woman in Phnom Penh about this subject. We both laughed and pondered why each other wanted each others skin. We both agreed you must be happy with yourself. It was a pleasant conversation and she smiled the whole time. Maybe happy someone else shared similar ideas, coming half way across the world. Or maybe I speak to fast. Either way I wish people will start to realize you are the way you were ment to be. It is hard, and I find myself wanting to have different features, like my friends with more 'western' ideals of beauty. The truth is beauty exists in all colours.

I think this is a really neat photo for several reasons. The fact it's over 30degrees everyday and 13hours ahead in time then at home. Also there's a lot of rooftop patios. Which are fun for relaxing and seeing the city. The most striking thing is the tall modern buildings, and the crane in the background. Cambodia is really strong to develop and catch up to their neighbors after the tragedy they endured. Walking down the street, mind you this is an up and coming area, you notice very 'western' styles shops. The locals work all day, and it's hard manual labour. You can tell they take pride in their work and they're striving for a more economically stable future. Stepping into a more poverty ridden area is hard to see, yet I find a valuable lesson if you pay attention. We really do take so much for granted back home. Not just food and water (which you can't drink) but security and freedom. The opportunity to go to school, to choose a job and decode a future that is different then what your family does. We are really lucky. Not to undermine the hardships that are still present, I just believe we often lose sight of all we have. It's only been 3 whole days here, but I hope to learn a lot more and continue to change my mindset and strive for more inner peace with myself.
