As my 1000th wine review on @vivino (link in the bio), it feels only right to say a little more about this @longridgewineestate 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon.
But up front, one must be clear that this wine will not earn you street cred. There won't be any male feminist vegans raising their fedoras and tipping their glasses when you offer them a scoach (during a gritty inner city gathering of artisanal food producers). But who needs all that when you're sipping on a wine that's more classic than Connery in a tuxedo?
A wine with tannins finer than Jolie on Oscars night, and with a caboose of rich cassis that lingers longer than an Iron Fist intro sequence. While this may not get you a return invitation to the next natural-wines-only seance, or an all access pass to that Woodstock commune where they blind taste organic grey water, it will indeed bring you deep joy and, to quote Park Life, an enormous sense of well-being.
Find this. Drink this.

Craig Hawkins is an idiot.
Selling his Queen of Spades Tinta Amarela in a 750ml bottle is probably the dumbest idea I’ve encountered this year. Everybody knows that a Magnum should be the minimum order quantity. To the uninitiated (like myself) it may drink very much like a fresh lighter-styled grenache, but Tinto Amarela is in fact a grape from the Douro region of Portugal, often used in the making of Port. Craig spent a period of time making wine in Douro and, no doubt, this was partially the inspiration for this wine. It is dangerously smashable, but fortunately it carries only 11% abv, so the damage of drinking five bottles is relatively limited.
Find this. Drink this.
Many thanks @micklyn

The launch of Hillcrest’s Saartjie Range feels a little like Alias season 2 when SD6 got a whole new digs. The same @hillcrestestatesa ...but with a brand new lease on life. This #cabfranc is one of two highlights from the Saartjie Range of varietal wines.
The range includes some delightfully adventurous work from Winemaker @arnowyndief including a particularly singular Semillon that is worth driving out to the @durbanvillewinevalley to find.

My sister @micklyn just invested heavily in her own street cred. And happened to have made my Christmas a way more festive. I can’t wait to sample a few of these beauties with her. Lovely work from #testalonga

We eat and drink with our eyes. Regardless of the grape, region or vintage, a wine that glows in the glass is always on a winning wicket.

The usual Swartland suspects; an oddball mix of varieties, grand claims to winemaking purism, whole berry fermentation, a militant condemnation of oak...& a partridge in a bushvine.
For all that, it’s still quite nice. 👁 A delightfully clear low-intensity cherry red.
👃🏼Nose is quite closed, but there are pleasant notes of pepper, oreganum, & cherry fruit. 👄 Palate carries soft red berry fruit & bright red plum acidity. Pepper spice on the tail. 📝 Shiraz, Pinotage, Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Grenache & Chenin Blanc.

It feels safe to say that there is a generation of wine lovers who know little more of Alto Estate than their supermarket shelf Alto Rouge blend, where the most exciting thing about it is the price.
But conservative though they may be, with a brand image that feels like it was crafted at a late night brainstorm session between PW Botha & Joseph Goebbels, wine lovers would do themselves a disservice to skip out on a tasting of some of Alto’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignons. At the very least, it will give you glimpse into the style of the Old Skool crowd on the New World scene.

Eight years ago, @rosettaroastery met with @jordan_metcalf, and then a few days later with @velcrosuit. A few weeks after that meeting (on the first draft, of course) they showed us the graphic manifestation of what we’d been desperately trying all along to express through our work.
If I’m honest, I always feel like they present us as far cooler than we actually are, but I’m sure as heck not going to stop them doing so. This latest little bit of vinyl work is continued proof of their rare talent.

Very excited to have a brand new @miachaplin original up in the store. It’s amazing how a little beauty can make your work day seem that much more manageable.

This wine is like Pirates of the Caribbean. No one cares what episode it is, you just keep investing because you know the formula is right. 👃🏼 Soft elements of plums, blackberries, cherries, gentle oak, and ever-so-subtle pepper. 👄 Softer than a Hugh Grant film with lovely balance between ripe black cherry & plum fruit, and the juicy blackberry acidity.
Tail carries lingering black fruit and a re-emergence of the subtle pepper and cloves spice. 📝 High art meets mass appeal. Fine work from #JosefDreyer at #Rakawines

When the mom-in-law is in town, it's rosé week. Each wine may be drunk only once. The mother-in-law's decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
Mercifully I got to do the shopping, which limited the carnage we could have witnessed.
The range saw wines from #BotRivier #stellenbosch #hemelenaarde and #Simondium with some delightful surprises and some as-to-be-expected results.
The most notable winners (although both were deemed "God-awful, nigh-on-undrinkable" by mother-dearest) were the following: * The Bloos by @hpf_skapie was a splendid tribute to Bordeaux, using all five red bdx varieties, but somehow managing to deliver the most splendid laser like acidity of a bdx Sauvignon Blanc. If you don't like acidity, steer clear of this guy. * Chardonnay-Pinot noir by @boschendal which was in essence a very tastefully wooded Chardonnay, with the marginally more serious nose of a wooded Pinot noir. What's not to like.
Many thanks to both @boschendal & @hpf_skapie for bothering to take seriously a style of wine that sometimes struggles to take itself seriously.

One of the hallmarks of a mature consumer industry is one where consumers make a valid entry at a large range of price points.
Our wine industry has products that sell for R40.00 and some that sell R400.00 (or triple that, if you know where to look). Both have their markets and both price brackets offer a very different set of value propositions.
It is possible for a R400 bottle of wine to deliver outstanding value to the consumer who can afford it. Like, unfortunately, it is possible for a R40 bottle of wine to offer viciously poor value, despite its relatively benign-seeming price point. This wine is one of those. Link to full review is in the bio.

The ample bosom of the wine world; fruit forward, mysterious, deep, soft, rounded, and profoundly comforting. Pure class from David Nieuwoudt.
Layers of ripe black fruit roll gently over the palate with exceptional balance between the sweetness of the ripe black fruit and superbly clean juicy blackberry acidity. It boggles the mind how this wine manages to be both clean, clear, and elegant, while simultaneously presenting as softer than a YouTube video of kittens sleeping.
Masterful. @driehoekcederberg

While the @zeitzmocaa Collection is superb, not all the masterpieces are inside the Zeitz. This gem from @kvdwespressonisticworks Is worth a little limelight too.
It took me a while to get this up, purely because we've been loving the process of learning to drive this engineering marvel. It's been pretty magical watching The Silo District slowly waking up, and with @theyardcapetown having its media launch today, it feels like Summer at the Silo has finally arrived. If you haven't popped in at the @rosettaroastery espresso bar inside The Yard restaurant, it's worth adding it to your to-do list.

I wrote earlier about my appreciation for people and companies that refuse to accept the status quo, without first asking a few questions and investigating the possibility that there may be a smarter way to do things. @kvdwespressonisticworks is a company that has built a multi-generational legacy founded on the principle that "there must be a better way". So excited to pull a few @rosettaroastery espressos out of this beauty. #silodistrict #vandawaterfront #capetown #keesvanderwesten #keesvanderwestenspirit

It's Bieber vs. Bublé. Or Coldplay vs. Radiohead. Plenty of acclaim in both sides of the fence, but one might argue that their work is simply directed at different audiences.
It must be said, though, that no matter which side you come down on, there are way worse tasks to be set than having to finish these beauties in order to reach a verdict. #researchanddevelopment #cabernetsauvignon #sawine @kleinezalze @waterford_estate

Spring is here! The official date was 18 August, so this is a week or so late. Or the almond blossoms are early. Who's to say?
