My edit for the @tuckerdoss FFA contest

I've only really started using Photoshop less than a week ago (I've always just used Lightroom), but I'm reasonably happy with the way this turned out. Full disclosure, this is not my picture, and it's a shot from a Mavic drone, which is something else I've never encountered before. The RAWs behave in a way which is quite unlike those of my XPro. At any rate, hopefully it's good enough to win me that drone, although some of the other edits are pretty spectacular. I'm also not entirely sure how I feel about replacing an entire sky (it's not really a photograph anymore, but more along the lines of digital art), but it was, at the very least, an exercise which will no doubt benefit me in the long run.

“For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfil themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. When a tree is cut down and reveals its naked death-wound to the sun, one can read its whole history in the luminous, inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured. And every young farmboy knows that the hardest and noblest wood has the narrowest rings, that high on the mountains and in continuing danger the most indestructible, the strongest, the ideal trees grow.

So the tree rustles in the evening, when we stand uneasy before our own childish thoughts: Trees have long thoughts, long-breathing and restful, just as they have longer lives than ours. They are wiser than we are, as long as we do not listen to them. But when we have learned how to listen to trees, then the brevity and the quickness and the childlike hastiness of our thoughts achieve an incomparable joy. Whoever has learned how to listen to trees no longer wants to be a tree. He wants to be nothing except what he is. That is home. That is happiness.” Hermann Hesse, Bäume. Betrachtungen und Gedichte, published just a few days before my birth, 1 January 1984.

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach-- the tangible end of the Oregon Trail.

This picture is from a few years ago at the tail end of my first great American road trip, having just moved, essentially on a whim, all the way across the country to a place I had never even visited. All it took was a chance meeting with a girl (this girl), at a bar on Christmas Eve, and a couple months later we had a packed car and were heading west.
Holidays always serve as focal points for me, and this approaching one is no different. My life has always been so all over the place, so scattered, that it's quite remarkable for me to take one day (such as Christmas Eve), and project it backwards over the course of my life. Where was I? What was I doing? Who was I then?
Evidently five years ago I was a guy who just dropped everything and sped across the country with a girl.

The North Gorge on Stradbroke island. Straddie is the outdoor playground of Brisbane-- generations of city dwellers came here as scouts, as campers and beach goers, basking in the sun or enjoying the forests and the sea. On this day, the incoming tide up the gorge brought with it a school of fish, and there were great numbers of sea turtles lazily circling in the surf, periodically dipping down for a mouthful of fish. Slightly further out to sea, a small pod of dolphins was doing the same. Our dinner as well was plucked from the sea this night-- spiny lobsters merely clutched bare-handed free diving on the rocks just around the point. If I ever lived in Brizzy again, I think I'd try to make Straddie my home.

A rare sunny day in Milford Sound. This is one of the wettest places on earth, and temporary waterfalls (and sometimes as a result, trees) can usually be seen cascading down to sea level from the surrounding peaks' upper reaches. On this day however, the skies were open, and the sunlight and high mountains' shadows afforded some really amazing visual contrast. I am often struck by how frequently scenes from New Zealand are reminiscent of a Miyazaki film-- landscapes, towns, and even the every day lives idealised in Miyazaki's mind seem to be genuine and real in this country. There's a quaintness to it, offset and reinforced by some truly magnificent scenery. .

Sunset at the summit of Ben Lomond, Queenstown, New Zealand.
I felt this summit calling me from its lofty height in my first few moments in town. This was my first walk up, but I ended up climbing it nearly 30 times during my tenure as a Queenstown resident. I knew every rock, every bend in its path, every copse of trees, and every nuance of its moods throughout the seasons. Every walk up was panacea to my every ailment, mental or otherwise. Something Wrong? Climb the Ben. The Germans called Nanga Parbat 'Our Mountain' during the golden age of Himalayan exploration. I came to think of Ben Lomond in the same familiar mindset. Every hike up was like a visit to an old friend's house-- a cup of tea shared at the summit with the parrots which resided there. I miss you friend, and hope to visit soon. .

@paultje90 down the nose of Mt. Alfred. It was our second attempt; the first was halted a few weeks before by lightning and the trail turning into a river. Good times.

15 year old Nick standing proudly in front of his first vehicle, a 1970 VW Westfalia, newly purchased from that dude Craig. It got stolen some years later whilst I was living in Glasgow from the back of my dad's apple orchard. Hopefully they used the parts (and the rebuilt engine awaiting installation) to gussy up their own aging wreck. It galls me to think it may have simply been sold for scrap. RIP Herr Oberst, long since gone but not forgotten.

I've been looking at this sign for a couple years now, thinking I'd some day photograph it. Kind of a poor effort, but time has ran out. The landmark that is the Prolanes on Powell will one day soon shut, in the efforts of progress, to be converted into a Target. The parking garage is apparently much more valuable for retail than entertainment. Sic Transit Gloria.

I had completely the wrong lens, we got stymied by fog, had to run from the cops, and got stuck in hours of traffic, but I did manage to photograph the totality. I know a lot of people who felt 99.2% was close enough to totally eclipsed, and I can understand that impulse given the difficulties involved-- but standing there in the oddly pulsating bluish white light whilst staring at this pitch-dark disc rimmed in globs of purple and blue, I saw and felt the most amazing thing I have, ever in all my days--all for the measley price of a traffic jam. #eclipse2017
