Gaudi window - Colonia Güell is about 20 minutes outside Barcelona. A modernist village with some stunning architecture and an unfinished church designed by Gaudi - including these amazing windows
Meet Celia. She very patiently guided us round @vinseum in Vilafranca del Penedès on our recent visit to Catalunya. Of course we ended the tour with a wine tasting - this lovely red with a name that translates as “Tears of Autumn” which was very nice!
Into the light - the mirador at Montserrat (not in the pic - the thousands of visitors behind!!)
The grand basilica | Inside the basilica at Montserrat is a shrine to the Black Madonna. People queue for quite some tike to see the shrine and to kiss or touch her hand. I personally found the view the other way looking into the basilica itself to be much more impressive!
Outside the market - I think the doggie from the last picture was happy that his mistress had bought him some jamon! Terrassa was a delight - some stunning modernist buildings and we only scratched the surface on our short visit. Just 20 or so minutes from Barcelona and a lot less crowded. Gracies to Ester from @terrassaturisme for showing us around!
In the Market - one thing I love about Spanish cities is the central market. Fabulous fresh produce everywhere from jamons to the freshest of fish and seafood that put the paltry offerings you can find in most places on this island to shame. And not forgetting the people - and the doggies! This was taken at the Mercat De la Independència during our walk round Terrassa. This market is as wrought-iron-roofed and cathedral like as most central markets and is fan-shaped with three main axes.
Masia Freixa - a house designed in the Catalan Modernist style by Lluís Muncunill i Parellada and built between 1905 and 1910. Originally a textile factory it was converted by Josep Freixa into a family home and is now home to the Tourism Office of Terrassa
The Human Tower | During my recent visit to Terrassa I had the privilege of watching the Castellers Minyons of Terrassa rehearsing for their next contest. This is a Catalan tradition, recognised in 2010 by UNESCO to be a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It brings together all ages in a real sense of community. Some of the most complex castells can involve up to 400 people, up to 10 high. It was actually quite an emotional experience watching how, with very few words, the tower is formed and dismantled. They made it look very easy but I am sure it is anything but. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. Huge thanks to @minyons @polsarrau and @terrassaturisme for the amazing experience.
Upward spiral - inside the Minaret Tower of the stunning Masia Freixa by Lluís Muncunill i Parellada in Terrassa. Expect to see more of this gorgeous catalan modernist building over the next few days!
Als carrers de Barcelona - it was a shame it was raining so hard during our day in Barcelona as it made taking pictures quite a challenge! It would have been great to explore more streets like this one between El Born and the Barri Gotic but that’s all the more excuse for a return visit!

On the beach in Castelldefels
Through the clouds to Montserrat. On the way up to Montserrat we thought we were driving through thick fog so we didn’t hold out much hope for any views from the top. How wrong we were! Turns out it wasn’t fog but low cloud so we were greeted with scenes like this.
Contemplation - the Basilica of Montserrat
Day 2: a hike up a mountain in the Parc Naturel del Montseny about an hour outside Barcelona. Stunning views from Montserrat to the Pyrenees and the Med. Breathtaking and well worth the climb!
