Pearly Girl. Fierce. Brave. Brilliant. Driven. My favorite 14 yo on the planet. She knows what she wants, she knows how to ask for it, and she expects the world to deliver. Look out. 💛💝💛

I need to be silent for a while, worlds are forming in my heart.

The Layers
I have walked through many lives,
some of them my own,
and I am not who I was,
though some principle of being
abides, from which I struggle
not to stray.
When I look behind,
as I am compelled to look
before I can gather strength
to proceed on my journey,
I see the milestones dwindling
toward the horizon
and the slow fires trailing
from the abandoned camp-sites,
over which scavenger angels
wheel on heavy wings.
Oh, I have made myself a tribe
out of my true affections,
and my tribe is scattered!
How shall the heart be reconciled
to its feast of losses?
In a rising wind
the manic dust of my friends,
those who fell along the way,
bitterly stings my face.
Yet I turn, I turn,
exulting somewhat,
with my will intact to go
wherever I need to go,
and every stone on the road
precious to me.
In my darkest night,
when the moon was covered
and I roamed through wreckage,
a nimbus-clouded voice
directed me:
“Live in the layers,
not on the litter.”
Though I lack the art
to decipher it,
no doubt the next chapter
in my book of transformations
is already written.
I am not done with my changes.

you will become a graveyard
of all the women you once were
before you rise one morning
embraced by your own skin
you will swallow a thousand
different names
before you taste the meaning
held within your own

Just looking at pictures from our summer vacations and pretending like winter's not on her way. 🙈
#zentheadventuredog can scare away a large bull moose with a growl and a single bark. Currently renting him out to interested hikers. 😉

Dear Past Rachel:

Everything turns out fine! Every hope, every dream, every blessing you've ever been promised: they all come true. And it's all worth it.

This place, #tibbleforkreservoir is gone forever, replaced by the "Bro-Ho Beach." ---------------------------

You have traveled too fast over false ground;
Now your soul has come to take you back.

Take refuge in your senses, open up
To all the small miracles you rushed through.

Become inclined to watch the way of rain
When it falls slow and free.

Imitate the habit of twilight,
Taking time to open the well of color
That fostered the brightness of day.

Draw alongside the silence of stone
Until its calmness can claim you.

#John O'Donohue
Forgiveness does not relieve someone of responsibility for what they have done. Forgiveness does not erase accountability. It is not about turning a blind eye or even turning the other cheek. It is not about letting someone off the hook or saying it is okay to do something monstrous. Forgiveness is simply about understanding that every one of us is both inherently good and inherently flawed. Within every hopeless situation and every seemingly hopeless person lies the possibility of transformation.

A little over two years ago I first hiked this trail to Angel Flats. Returning this afternoon flooded me with all the things I felt on that first hike. I was just starting to remember who I really was: resilient, brave, wise, and sensitive. It took every good attribute I have, and lots of divine grace to get me to where I am today. Also lots of Coke Zero, yoga, true love, and therapy. It was hard and beautiful, just like this hike. And absolutely worth it.

I woke up at 4:30 am and it's now 1 am and I can't sleep but it's ok because I'm looking at all the pics on the #bordercollierescue tag feed and feeling so deliciously happy about so many things in my life:
1. #zentheadventuredog
2. Successful therapist matches
3. A husband I adore
4. The ultimate flexible work schedule
5. Wise and good friends
6. Plans to start my dream nonprofit
7. Canceled soccer practice
8. Post traumatic growth
9. Utah summer
I dim. I dim. I dim.
If someone blew
I might go out.

I did not.
I guess I'm brighter than I thought.
