My search for a great banana bread recipe has lasted years. I eat it for breakfast almost every day, so for years, every time I made banana bread, I'd try a new recipe. Over time, dozens of recipes have disappointed me: the too heavy, the over-the-top rich, the cardboard dry, the overly dense, the excessively banana-tasting (yes, there is such a thing), the so-packed-with-grains-it’s-not-even-enjoyable-anymore, the flat-as-a-shoe, the tasteless, and the ho-hum. But I've found my way to the one banana bread recipe from which I will never ever stray 🍌🍞😍
I hesitate to call this banana bread "perfect"--is there such a thing as perfect anything?--but it sure is textbook. If you're a banana bread lover, this is *the* treat you've been dreaming of. I challenge you to make it once: I guarantee you won't look back 👌🏼

It's National Pasta Day! 🍝 I thought this was the perfect excuse to reshare one of my blog's top recipes, Bolognese Sauce, first published back in 2010. We actually just had this for dinner tonight, it's my family's favorite dish 😍
My How to Make Authentic Bolognese Sauce has received close to 400 stellar, heart-warming comments over the years. A couple examples:
"This is the closest recipe to my great-grandma Nonna’s sauce."
"This recipe is amazing. After making it several times, I decided to put it to the ultimate challenge and make it for my 100% Italian father (who is a chef) and 100% Italian step-mother… both born and raised New Yorkers and die-hard foodies who have eaten in ALL the best Italian restaurants in NYC. While my dad was too proud to admit it full on, my step-mother declared this “the best bolognese she has ever had.” Which means… better then his :) Score! This is a huge compliment, to you and me, so thank you."
So what are you waiting for? Make your own batch, asap! I'm pretty sure it'll become your family's favorite dish, too 👌🏼

I find very few breakfast options as satisfying as homemade muffins--and they're exactly the kind of treats I look forward to returning to when I come back from a vacation.
The muffins I've been making for years are filled with good-for-you ingredients. It's a versatile recipe: you can sub your favorite berries, dried fruits, or nuts for the blueberries and walnuts I included in my version. Plus, the muffins are so quick and easy to make kids can even make them on their own--though the floor might need some cleaning up afterwards! 🙊😉

Spent the last few days back in the pastel-hued streets of Lisbon. It will truly be hard to leave Portugal! I was already under the country's spell after visiting Porto and the Douro Valley a couple years ago, but discovering the southern part of the country only deepened my love for it. The people are discreet but friendly, extremely welcoming with children and courteous with families, the scenery is extremely varied, always interesting, often breathtaking, the food is excellent and the wines are even better. We're leaving hoping--knowing!--we'll come back! 🇵🇹💕

Been feasting on petiscos, Portugal's version of tapas--or small plates--at pretty much every other meal for the past two weeks. They always look so appealing that I actually never make it to the main courses menu section! 😍
This spread was enjoyed at Cato Restaurant, a gem of a place we encountered on the way to the most impressive beach I've ever been to, Praia da Bordeira. It was a mammoth of a beach, complete with sand dunes and cliffs and giant Atlantic waves expert surfers rode like they were nothing. I could have stayed there forever, watching beauty unfold before my eyes--but hunger called 🙈 and Cato was the perfect place to ease the transition back into civilisation 👌🏼😅

The breathtaking scenery from Cabo de São Vicente, Portugal's most southwesterly point 💯
Just coming back from a superlative visit at the Quinta do Quetzal winery in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Breathtaking site, extraordinarily knowledgeable guide (👋🏼 Norberto), fantastic modern art exhibition (!!), super fresh tasting menu with delicious wine pairings, perfect service. Salted butterscotch glaze, bonjour! 👋🏼
Looking for a sweet treat you can spread anywhere and everywhere? This one's out of this world! Taste it once, and you'll want to spread it on your morning toast every day 🙊 It's versatile too: use it warm and it'll beautifully drip to the sides of the cake you pour it over. Cool it for a while, and it thickens into an icing you can spread thick onto whatever could benefit from such a topping--such as these Brown Butter Apple Blondies 👌🏼 I'll let you close your eyes and just imagine how dreamy that combination is. A bite of heaven, that's what it is! 😍

My head is still reeling from all the amazing food we ate and the beautiful places we saw during a Lisbon food tour conducted by the fabulously knowledgeable @lazyflavors! Food tours are my favorite thing to do when I visit a new city and I'm so happy I was able to get on one today (heartfelt thanks to @catavinoexplores for helping me book this extremely last minute!) I'll be sharing more about the experience later on but I couldn't help sharing a colorful preview right away 😍
YOU GUYS. The food heaven that is Lisbon's @timeoutmarketlisboa is 2 mins away from our @airbnb apartment. How can we not pop in every single day? 🙈😍
The place is like an upscale food court--and when I say upscale, I mean it. I've seen several dishes come out of different counters and presentations rival the food that's served in fine dining restaurants. 👌🏼 There's amazing choice too, from chef-driven concepts, to decadent dessert counters, to wine bars, to a gin-centric cocktail hub, to craft souvenirs, you'll find everything you'll need for a tasty night--or, honestly, a whole day!--out 💃🏼🥂
Quite the feast (and a side of superhero drawings 😂) at Pasteis de Belém, an über famous pastry shop 20 minutes out of Lisbon's city center. We were only there for a snack but rounded it up with a croissant, a duck meat pastry, two slices of quiche, and two pasteis de Belém--the whole reason we were there in the first place. Pasteis de Belém are custard tartlets with shatteringly crisp crusts, and they're said to have been created at the shop we visited today. They're certainly the most famous Portuguese dessert, which the Portuguese also have for breakfast--how awesome is that? 😍
Thanks to @onetinyleap's awesome tip, we skipped the crazy lines of people waiting to buy Pasteis de Bélem's renowned tartlets (the place churns out over 20,000 of them every day! 😱) and went straight into the sit-down restaurant, which is a labyrinth of succeeding rooms that can sit 400 people total (!!) Service is extremely efficient, you can look at antiques dotted around the rooms and beautiful tile work decorating the walls, and even opt to sit on a shaded patio. Honestly, if you don't need to buy more tartlets than just a tasting, I don't see why you'd subject yourself to the stressful lines. Three cheers for slow-paced travel! 🙌🏼

{NEW RECIPE} As much as I love an ambitious baking project and an elaborate homemade meal once in a while, on weeknights, I usually just want dinners to be over and done with. Meals "in a bowl" are my go-to option of late: I’ll drop whole grains or noodles, proteins, and veggies in serving bowls, drizzle on some dressing or sauce I have on hand, and sprinkle on something crunchy as a finishing touch. This type of meal comes together in a flash, it’s super filling, and—let’s be honest—it’s way more fun to eat just because it’s served in a bowl 🙌🏼
I'm always on a look out for ways to make my bowl building process even faster, which is why I was super happy to work with @thesaucyfishco to create this week's new recipe: their top-quality fish products can be cooked from frozen. Throw the fish in the oven (using the handy provided baking bag) and prep all your ingredients while it bakes. A healthy, hearty, exciting meal will land before you about 30 minutes later 🙌🏼

The vegetarian restaurant scene is alive and well in Lisbon: I've spotted and read about many well rated vegetarian restaurants--there seems to be a wider offering than in other European cities I've visited before. We indeed had a lovely lunch at Graça 77, a spot we stumbled upon by chance just off the beautiful Miradouro da Graça. Among the delicious things we ate: a slightly spicy coconut milk and lentil soup, vegetable sausage croquettes that had just a hint of smoky flavor to them, and super crisp sweet potato chips served with a roasted pepper dip. The restaurant itself is super cute, rustic and modern, service was fast, and they have free wifi 👌🏼 A definite must for those who need a break from fish and meat centric meals in Lisbon! 🌿
