I have a dog eared copy of the Handmaid’s Tale from the 90’s that I just reread before finally watching the series. I wanted this fifteen year old to have her own version, one with a new foreword from Margaret Atwood written in Feb 2017. Before giving this new copy to my daughter, I couldn’t resist reading the writer’s words written after the series in which Atwood has a brief walk-on role (did you spot her?) What struck me more than anything else is that she had decided from the outset to not write anything into the novel that did not have historic precedent - James Joyce said something like there is nothing more horrifying than history, and he’s bloody well right. To think that everything you read in the book has already come to pass somewhere in the world is beyond words. The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the best things I have ever read and for that reason I treasured it and didn’t want to see the series, but I am so very glad I did. The series tells other stories that are only hinted at in the novel. I do think of it as a feminist novel but the series shares the stories of other disempowered people and communities and I love it even more now. Atwood says that one of the questions she is always asked is whether the novel is a prediction. I would like to think that it is the writing of authors like her and the way the rest of us bear witness to this work that will help us make it an anti-prediction. I’d like to think we will un-make this kind of a dystopian future by bearing witness.

We woke up with glitter on our pillows this morning. Whilst not a believer in signs, I’m going to roll with this one. Happy bright, shiny new year to you. Lots and lots of love. Xxxx

We did a Syrian dance workshop in 127 degrees this morning. Discovered that neither of us are gifted bellydancers. Last night we saw the best band of the festival so far and had the entire family in the mosh pit. 19-20 are what I would imagine a love child of the Black Keys and the Pogues would sound like. And they’re from Goulburn ❤️ @woodfordfolkfestival #woodfordfolkfestival #woodfordfolkfestival2017

This is half an hour after we discovered the Vinyl Lounge, a Haven of Punk and Grunge in a Seething Sea of Herbal. This is also moments before I suggested attending a workshop called Dance Like the Celestial Enchantress. He wasn’t keen.

Just listened to Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on a blisteringly hot road trip watching spinifex tumble across the bitumen. Such a weird but beautiful juxtaposition of landscapes.

Tis the season when I try not to set fire to the house with the Christmas candles. After a close encounter at fifteen with a patchouli scented taper in my childhood bedroom, I have avoided anything with an open flame. Christmas being the one real exception. No exceptions for patchouli.

Another rockstar we worked with on PlayUP is @alittlevintagedoll Jennie’s work is beyond words. She has also been working on a set of commissioned dolls for another project that will be launched next year. In the meantime we couldn’t resist buying some dolls for cuddling with in PlayUP too.

We’ve been so lucky to work with talented people on the new PlayUP This is an amazing commission from @becselleck she created this soft sculpture art quilt for 0-2’s and kids with additional sensory needs. All recycled materials, some with beautiful backstories as treasured garments. So many textures with surprise pullout pockets for exploratory play too. @oldparliamenthouse #kidsinmuseums #PlayUP #childrensrights
