Well, yes. It was the Lent food in 3/4 of Europe....but I doubt people reading those has an idea of what that creature was ;-)
I rather prefer the "stockfish" version (not salted, hard as a piece of wood), but I could not find it anywhere last time I went to Italy. Traditional for "fasting" days, including Xmas eve.
Well, I still know many people defining themselves vegetarian and eating fish. In my first journey to Russia (2012), tired of having meat at every meal, I asked for a vegetarian dish in a restaurant. They suggested me something with salmon 😐 there are still a lot of people out there not knowing fishes are animals...
At last there is no green!
@gregggalyean mint green labels on the pickle crocks! Ha ha!
I can't look at these cod without remembering a conversation with someone who had been on holiday in France and was horrified at the Auchan supermarket selling "seagulls" 😂 He took some convincing that they were salted cod for the Portuguese spécialités! 😊
By some miracle it's not "morue verte".. or beaver (which were classified as fish for lenten)
I made several salted cod dishes for Christmas eve just last month.
