Florence Nightingale said, “Were there none who were discontented with what they have, the world would never reach anything better.” Always strive for your best, whether at your career or your personal life, and always remember that everyone operates on their own individual timeline. I didn’t finish grad school until I was 34, but being in a classroom full of 20-something’s never slowed my roll.
So, if you’re debating about going back to school for a certain degree or even starting a program at any age, just suck it up and make it happen.
If you want better, do better.
However long that takes you.

Happy Sunday to all my fellow @CardiacStrong Nurses as I sport my UCSD Sulpizio Cardiovascular Unit jacket for my Strength training today and already pondering about my next @NURSEpiration nursing shift.
.
.
Remember that there's no such thing as a perfect nursing shift, but there's such a thing as a perfect storm.
Through the nursing world you have to be very strategic when making decisions with your patients that are recovering or going into emergency surgery,
titrate gtts per protocol,
monitoring their CVP,
monitoring their A-Line,
Assessing changes in vital signs immediately, also monitoring their Foley, chest tubes and JP drainage outputs, etc.
.
.
We can't forget the charting,
documentation & communicating with our nursing medical team and doctors.
The list keeps going with all the multitasking that's involved but y'all have to remember to keep your game face on all at all times because you're the the patients advocate for protecting & optimizing health through facilitating nursing care my fellow nursebrothers & Nursesisters. Whoa!! Again that was a mouthful. Lol
So I'm curious, as a Registered nurse what has been your biggest challenge?

Using a 3-D printer, scientists have created an external membrane that can keep a heart beating virtually forever. The thin membrane is elastic, designed to stretch over a heart like a glove, and is outfitted with tiny electrodes that monitor cardiac function. It was first demonstrated in 2014 on a rabbit heart. Researchers at both the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Washington University published the astonishing breakthrough in Nature, and hope it will someday help prevent heart attacks in humans. Although it’s 10-15 years away from being made available to humans, the revolutionary device might be a long-term solution to these normally catastrophic events.
The team said that they were able to custom fit it to the rabbit’s heart by using computers to scan it’s surface area and put together a mould for the membrane.
They then put it together and wove it with a spider web-like network of electrodes that interact with the rest of the body to regulate heart beat – it’s light years ahead of a pacemaker. Incidentally someone asked on Twitter whether or not this would need to be removed post-mortem (we tend to do that with both pacers and ICDs in the mortuary) and it's a great point. I'd say perhaps not, since it's apparently a network of plastic which connects these tiny electrodes. Time will tell, but that's just my thoughts on it ☣

An unlucky injury while climbing over a fence!
.
This young patient tried to climb over a spiked fence when he sliped and impaled his hand by the sharp edge of the fence. Fortunately he did not suffer significant injuries to the underlying structures. .

The best Valentines anyone could ask for.

Henry (one of the surgical residents) and Chrissy met at the hospital when she was a new nurse. They started dating and two years later he proposed to her by calling a “code proposal.” Chrissy’s manager had asked her to come in for a meeting on her day off. She tried to change the time because 11:15 am was too early for a night shifter, but that was the only time that worked for her. Chrissy said she would come but might be wearing pajamas. 🤗
During the meeting Chrissy heard over the loud speaker “Attention please, testing, code proposal Seton 6 West.” The manager turned to her and said “that’s for you, let’s go.” Chrissy assumed it was just a test code as they’d had recently talked about codes. She walked onto the unit and it wasn’t until Chrissy saw everyone standing there and Henry waiting for her at the end of the hall that she realized what was going on. Chrissy thought Henry was still coming home from one of his rotations at another hospital and was very surprised to say the least. The other funny thing is that Chrissy once paged him “code hug” so he would come hug when me we were working together.
