“The tools feel special in your hand. They look special. They age and wear in a way that is beautiful. I find myself reaching for the wrenches when I don’t need to, just to hold them, or to check bolts for tightness simply because the tools call to be used. On top of that, they are built to last and last and last.” — @truebs on our Custom Silca HX-One Home Essential Kit. Follow the link in our bio to learn more.

The University of Iowa’s School of Art and Art History is shaping the next generation of frame builder with its Handbuilt Bicycle I and Handbuilt Bicycle II classes. The four-credit-hour classes–which count towards some engineering degrees–teach bicycle-geometry theory, bike fitting, AutoCad, tube bending, mitering, and, of course, welding. The students use what they learn to build their own frames. Shown here a bike built by Patric Reinbold, a senior working towards a degree in mechanical engineering, with a focus in design. Reinbold is an avid bike tourer, and wanted a bike that allowed him to do off road touring and bike packing, which led him to design this drop bar rig with clearance for plus-size mountain bike tires. Reinbold estimates he has more than 60 hours in the design and construction of this steel frame (students can build with titanium in Handbuilt Bicycle II). 📷&📝 @ilikesushi #NAHBS

Corey Lowe of Eyewater Cycles grabbed the “Best New Builder” award at the 2018 North American Bike Show (NAHBS) with this elegant custom carbon road bike. Though his Seattle-based brand is just two years old, Lowe has over 10 years of bicycle-engineering experience, including a stint at Specialized, and contract work for other brands, including Allied. Lowe’s frame is constructed using tube-to-tube construction with over-wraps at the joints that are finished with a proprietary process. Lowe is hesitant to spill the secrets of his process, which he says produces a, “Molded look without the molds,” and results a strikingly clean-looking joint with little redundant material. As shown, the frame with Enve fork sells for $6500 with custom geometry, threaded BB, and 1.125” external cup head tube. Wait time is around six-weeks. 📷&📝 @ilikesushi #nahbs

Sometimes you just really don't want to be stuck inside on the trainer 😹
Another exciting year at #cxnats @katiefncompton took her 14th Nationals win and @stephenhyde took his 2nd National title against four time champ @jpows in one of the tightest battles of the season!!
