Meet MassArt Continuing Education student Verónica Ramírez Martell. As a children’s fine art and woodworking teacher, Verónica began taking Continuing Education classes at MassArt to explore art forms she had not experienced before. Verónica had a desire to acquire a new visual language to express herself. As a result, Verónica has enrolled in Sculptural Weaving, Clothing Construction, Figure Drawing, Color Study and Japanese Woodblock Printing. Verónica has described the MassArt faculty as “amazing, incredibly inspiring” and having “fostered exploration in a supportive environment.”
.
This Fall, Verónica has been working on coil studies of Hurricane María in her Sculptural Weaving class with Nathalie Miebach, and returns the following day to work on reverse-engineering her favorite dress in Clothing Construction with Christian Restrepo (@ch_restrepo). She describes the experience as “10+ hours of my week that are dedicated to making and using my hands. It's hard work and one of the few things in my life that are helping me maintain my sanity.”
.
Verónica has enjoyed working alongside classmates in a various stages of their artistic and personal lives. She hopes to keep taking classes, learning new techniques, and incorporating what she learns into her teaching practice.

She worked various jobs in the Boston area, and decided to try Continuing Education at MassArt. Over the next two years, Mel enrolled in a variety of furniture design, ceramics and drawing classes.
.
Mel describes her experience with Continuing Education as: "I became excited about art again through Continuing Education classes... I regained confidence in my ability to learn and grow. My teachers were encouraging and inspiring." After building up her confidence and portfolio, Mel decided to enroll at MassArt as a BFA student in Industrial Design. Meet MassArt Fashion Design Certificate student Phyllis Carroll. came to MassArt in January 2017. Once her kids reached adulthood, she decided it was time to pursue the career of her dreams. Phyllis says, “being in the 50+ club and going to school is fabulous. We can hang with the young kids, too!”
.
After enrolling at MassArt, Phyllis discussed her vision and goals with her teachers and advisors. Professor Jennifer Varekamp connected Phyllis with Roger Hines of Hines and Designs for an internship. During her internship, Phyllis worked on the pre-launch of her golf clothing line. Phyllis’ first production line will be named the "Pinkney Collection," named after 7-year-old Patrick Pinkney, who sported Phyllis’ children’s designs for the pre-launch event.
.
In her time at MassArt, Phyllis has formulated a 5-year business plan to produce her golf clothing lines for children, pre-teens and adults. Phyllis' “goal is to bring a diverse culture to clothing on the golf course that does not exist right now. Existing golf lines don’t deal with diversity and different nationalities. My clothing line is diverse, colorful, and it represents international and national customers.” .
.
Swipe to see Phyllis’ work on the golf course!

PCE Thursday Night Lecture Series presents illustrator and MassArt instructor, Alex Gerasev on November 30th. Gerasev’s work often evokes feelings of connection, longing and alienation. He invites the viewer into a world both beautiful and strange, where the drama of everyday life plays out among flying dogs and stranded ships, while inquisitive creatures dot ethereal landscapes.
