Sometimes you gotta get off the fence, and swing for the fence!
Today was my first run in over two weeks. I took some time off to rest, reflect, and prioritise. These past few days I started to even doubt if I’d ever run strongly again. The murmurings inside my head—coupled with low level anxiety—left me with little confidence in my ability to explore outdoors the way I love to. -
The voice of doubt (or as I call it, the voice of satan) robs individuals—and the world—of so many great things. How many meaningful projects or acts of beauty never come to fruition because of doubt? If you’re “thinking” about committing to something, why are you still not chasing after your goal? Stop thinking about it and just do it! That book you’ve always wanted to write, start writing. The weight loss program you’re too afraid to start, get out that door. The play you want to audition for, get after it. That goal that’s only a seed in your mind, make it happen. You may not succeed or it may not go the way you planned. But it might just change your life in the process. -

I was a month shy of my 13th birthday when this kid entered my world. I was protective of him then. I’m protective of him now.

When Seán was small, he was perpetually curious. Always listening, absorbing, mimicking. By the time he was 10 he had a finely tuned riposte and could hold his nerve as an entertainer in front of a dozen adults.

When he was in his teens, he took after me and started drumming. Years later on a trip home from England, he showed me his drum room. “Ok, lil bro, show me what ya got.” When he was done shredding a QOTSA and SOAD song, I knew the student had become the master. Then I took him to London to see Tool for the first time. He still likes to berate me for staying drinking at the bar whilst an up-and-coming support band called Mastodon were playing.

And now? I guess everyone knows who he is. But to me he’s always been (and always will be) my little brother. Many people gauge success in life by how high up the ladder you can climb. I’ve gauged his success not by the heights he has scaled, but how he has reached down to raise up those around him.

Celebrating 28 years of you today, Seán. Happy birthday!

My running this year hasn’t started the way I’d planned. I’ve been trying to push through lethargy but each run is lacklustre and a struggle. I’ve decided to take a few weeks off to let my body recuperate and to allow the passion to return.
Running is a huge part of who I am but it doesn’t define me. My worth is not based on performance or achievement. Sometimes it’s vital to hit the reset button and take a break. 📷: Dylan.

“I've learned that fear limits you and your vision. It serves as blinders to what may be just a few steps down the road for you. The journey is valuable, but believing in your talents, your abilities, and your self-worth can empower you to walk down an even brighter path.” Soledad O'Brien

What works for someone else, may not work for you. Dont structure your life in accordance to the way others live. Find where you thrive! •

“He could've tuned in tuned in
But he tuned out
A bad time nothing could save him
Alone in a corridor waiting locked out
He got up outta there ran for hundreds of miles
He made it to the ocean had a smoke in a tree
The wind rose up set him down on his knee

A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw
Delivered him wings "Hey look at me now"
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor
Oh power oh

He's flying
High wide.” @pearljam - Given To Fly

I could have spent the entire day in front of my computer working on projects and sending emails. It’s those times that I have to force myself out the door and get the miles in. I’m so glad I have the option to spend time in nature as there’ll always be another email to send. I’ve never come back from a run and regretted it. Opt outside! •

If you’re interested, here’s some goals I have for the year: - learning more at the feet of some anointed teachers. I imparted a fair bit last year, this year is about learning and going deep. - running 2,000 miles (3218 km). - journaling a lot! I used to be a rabid documentarian of my thoughts. Must get back to it. - practicing grace and thankfulness. This might sound like some guru crap, but it’s much harder to do than to say. - take more than one retreat. I do one each year to recalibrate. This year I want to deep dive into my soul. - take more social media detoxes than last year—which totalled six weeks. - volunteer with an organisation I believe in. •

2017 was a well-beaten path. My annual Wrap-Up is on my blog - Clickable link in bio.
Merry New Year!
2017 was full on! Seriously.
But, IG is -1% of a snapshot of that. You see the cool scenery and me running around. What you don’t see are the days of anxiety and depression, or the days where I fail as a husband/friend/dad etc. We tend to display the very best side of ourselves on social media and not the one where we’re sobbing over a bucket of Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream at 4 a.m.— ok I’ve never done that but you know what I mean.
Next year I want to use this platform I’ve been given (very surprisingly to me, at least) to tell better stories and engage more responsibly.
I am so very thankful for the thousands of comments this year. I wish I had time to respond to them all. Thanks for deeming my feed worthy to of your time. It touches my heart.
A very merry Christmas to you and here’s to more adventures in 2018. •

Seven years sober.
Seven years ago today I wished I was dead. But out the ashes of alcoholism rose a new life of redemption and living each day as an imperfect but sober human.
These photos are from my days of having at least a beverage or a hash pipe in my hands at any given time.
I wrote some thoughts on my blog to mark the occasion.
You can see check it through this link:
Clickable link in bio. Thanks for all the love and encouragement over the years. Here’s to year #8!

I had the honour of sharing my running story with the team at @altraeurope today. People ask me how I run such crazy distances. Few actually know that it started as a drunken bet and that I hated running. Running has given me the freedom in my life to push myself further than I ever imagined and has brought me amazing friendships and adventure. I do it because I love it. If the whole social media world disappeared tomorrow, I couldn’t care less. I’d still be running. But what I’ve realised that my story has helped others struggling with their own personal demons and that’s why I share it.
The fact that Altra have my back makes the adventure so much sweeter. Being a part of their team and seeing how they do “business” is a breath of fresh air. Their values and community-orientated spirit go beyond just being a shoe company.
2018 is gonna be 🔥!

Winter is on the way and it’s a time when a lot of people are demotivated to stay fit and healthy. The key is consistency! It’s very easy post-thanksgiving and pre-Christmas to say, “hey, I’ve already slipped a little, might as well keep eating poorly.” Trust me, digging yourself out of that hole come January is not a fun adventure. This time of year I focus more on being consistent and having fun with running. I’m not out to break records or accomplish. I want to stay fit and be outside regularly. I’m taking my time and maybe exploring a new trail or two. It reveals stuff I normally miss when I’m in the zone. I’m also focussing more on core workouts to build the foundation for racing season in the spring.
This picture is from winter 2013 when a bunch of friends and I ran an impromptu 55 km through the night in a snow blizzard in -4C. It was fun, plain and simple.
Be consistent, add some variety, and stop once in a while to explore your surroundings.

I love travel but one of the great things about being home is a regular running schedule. Got my eyes on a sweet 50k trail race in April. Time to get serious!
