For the Tank Travel Issue, we attended one of Europe’s biggest annual balls, @lifeball_official.⠀

“In its maelstrom of queer and kink, its sexual pageantry, its banquet and red carpet and fashion show, its glittered, sweaty dancing that ends at 7am before the crowd moves on to apartments and lock-ins, the Life Ball connects abstractly with the Dionysian aspect of Vienna’s historic ballroom culture,” writes Kinza Shenn.⠀

The gilded balconies of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, watching the famously difficult, famously beautiful Swan Lake.⠀

“The dancers are dauntingly thin but technically accomplished; in the Danse des petits cygnes, in which 16 pas de chat must be rendered in perfect unison by four dancers, the sound of eight pointe shoes on sprung floor is as of one pair of feet,” writes the author Katherine Rundell. ⠀

The final act begins. Prince Siegfried and Odette battle the evil enchanter Rothbart; Siegfried pulls off one of Rothbart’s wings; Rothbart writhes rhythmically on the floor; I wait for Odette to die. Instead, she and Siegfried step over the twitching corpse and embrace: and the curtain comes down. Bewildered, I search Google Books for an answer. It turns out that in 1950 under the Soviet regime Konstantin Sergeyev staged a version at the Mariinsky with a new ending, rewritten under pressure from the censors to have Odette and Siegfried live happily ever after, and this is the version that’s still danced in St Petersburg. Personally, I prefer the version with the more dying.”⠀

“A riot of rich red brick and gold leaf, of blue and green domes and filigree spires.”⠀

The author Katherine Rundell describes the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood in the Tank Travel Issue.⠀

“The spilled blood in question belonged to Tsar Alexander II. In 1881, as his carriage was passing along the canal, an anarchist threw a grenade at his carriage. The tsar was unhurt; he climbed down from his carriage, irate, to speak to the anarchist, whereupon a co-conspirator threw another bomb, killing both himself and, after several hours of heavy bleeding, the tsar. The church was constructed on the spot of the assassination as a memorial.”⠀

“Displays of wealth thrill and awe; they also aim to quieten dissent with their assertion of power. To be in the Winter Palace is to be struck with the full force of the control the tsars wielded”.⠀

Inside one of St Petersburg’s most extravagant hotels, where Rasputin once dined. ⠀

“The Belmond Grand Hotel has had a history that matches the changing fortunes of the city,” writes the author Katherine Rundell. ⠀

“In 1917, during the Bolshevik Revolution and the First World War, it was used as an orphanage, with lessons chanted in the ballroom. Rasputin dined in the breakfast parlour. Now oligarchs stay in the 350 square metres of the Presidential Suite, which features a private gym and a study with a hidden door in a bookcase leading to the bedroom. (The hotel subscribes to my own philosophy, which is that if you’re rich and don’t have a hidden door in your bookcase you are misusing your wealth.)”⠀
