"the hour-long piece...stirred up such strong feelings—about love and friendship, about anger that seethes up under everyday good manners, about tenderness, about cooperation, about hope—that I wanted to hug it to me"—Arts Journal review of #Aroundtown // Tonight is your last chance to catch @dorfmandance's latest work at the Harvey! 📷: @j_cervantes

Throwback to 1970, when BAM organized a Black Film Series that amounted to a virtual anthology of black film from 1929—1969. Opening night featured 1933’s The Emperor Jones, which marked Paul Robeson’s first talking picture. As chronicled in 2015’s The Tallest Tree in the Forest, Robeson was one of the most radically outspoken and political black artists of all-time, and served as a mentor to figures like Harry Belafonte in the civil rights movement. Other highlights of the Series included Ousmane Sembene's Borom Sarret, which we paired with Black Girl back in 2016, and Carlton Moss's The Negro Soldier, which was included in last November’s Strange Victories: Black Soldiers and World War II program. #BlackHistoryMonth #LetsAmplifyBlackVoices

Teknopolis, our second annual tech takeover, returns to BAM Fisher this weekend! We’re excited to welcome @momentfactory, whose work Sound Tracer will be featured in the Fisher Lower Lobby.

About Sound Tracer: “Our piece this year is an abstract exploration of touch, sound and gesture; something akin to a living abstract painting. Visitors discover a world of colour, shape, sound and movement in constant evolution by exploring the myriad hidden affordances of the system. Each person can also leave their trace, which then serves as the starting point for the next user’s own playful exploration. It’s an experience that’s difficult to describe without trying it for yourself. And that’s the whole point. We wanted to create something that isn’t easily reduced to words, and that explores the complexity of multimodal experience; where sound, touch, shape and movement become blurred together, and it’s unclear which sense is taking the lead.” #BAMTeknopolis #digitalart #interactiveart

A very happy birthday to the brilliant and prescient Frederick Douglass, who was born 200 years ago today.
Did you know that in 1866 a faction of BAM’s board tried to prevent the acclaimed abolitionist from taking the stage at 176 Montague Street? Knowing Douglass was likely to launch a pointed attack on sitting President Andrew Johnson, they did so on the utterly spurious grounds that “no black person could take the stage at BAM.” Fortunately, a close friend helped convince the majority of the board to overrule this denial—and Douglass was permitted to speak on “The Assassination [of Abraham Lincoln] and Its Lessons” after all.
He began his oration by commenting directly on the scandal. “The day is coming,” he declared, “when Brooklyn will be quite ashamed that any subjection could have been made to a man appearing before it for the purpose of vindicating the cause of justice, of humanity and of liberty.” And throughout his two-hour address, he frequently circled back to the controversy to illustrate his points about the need for the North to be resolute in pushing for black equality. ✊🏿 #BlackHistoryMonth #LetsAmplifyBlackVoices

In 1969, the manifold interests of psychedelic hippies and civil rights activists dovetailed across two nights at BAM when jazz prophet ✨#SunRa✨ joined radical writer #AmiriBaraka (then known as #LeRoiJones) on the Howard Gilman Opera House Stage. The following night? Legendary Beat poet #AllenGinsberg appeared alongside #TheBand. Sun Ra makes a BAM homecoming of sorts this Mon, Feb 6, when his iconic Afrofuturist film Space is the Place screens as part of our #FightthePower: #BlackSuperheroes on Film series: BAM.org/fightthepower ✊🏿
This month and every month, let’s celebrate the remarkable stories and achievements of Black artists, and #LetsAmplifyBlackVoices. Happy #BlackHistoryMonth!

Special thanks to our friends @wendyssubway for another year of inspired and provocative curation in the Wendy's Subway Reading Room! The collection might be closed, but you can still peruse highlights by using the #WSxBAM hashtag or perusing the #BAMblog at BAM.org/blog 📚✨
Our final library spotlight is on @dispersedholdings—a listening and publication space located in the former apartment of artist Eva Hesse on the Bowery in New York. The space gives site to small-scale gatherings, slowed durations, reading, writing, publishing, cooking and eating, collective making, and collective listening. The dispersed library features books bearing on art, reading, resistance, listening and sound, publishing, and philosophy, as well poetry, fiction, and artist books.

Our penultimate library in the #WSxBAM collection is Yale Union—a center for contemporary art led by a desire to support artists, propose new modes of production, and stimulate the ongoing public discourse around art. Though it has plans to grow, the immediate iteration of the library is consciously unassuming. Housed in the smallest room at Yale Union, the library’s footprint is less than 100 square feet.
Check it out the #BAMFisher Lower Lobby through 5pm TODAY only!

Today, we grieve the loss of legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela—pictured here in 1956—whose music was featured at BAM in one of @alvinailey’s first main stage programs. A stalwart in the struggle for black liberation, Masekela formed the near-mythical ensemble, the Jazz Epistles, with pianist Abdullah Ibrahim in the late 1950s.
The Jazz Epistles were a short-lived sensation, breaking attendance records in Cape Town, channeling jazz giants from the US, and recording the first all-black modern jazz record in the country’s history. But South Africa’s apartheid government, threatened by their progressive message, ultimately shut it down.
This spring, we honor the legendary ensemble on Thu, Apr 19—and are deeply saddened that Masekela won’t be here to join us for this much deserved celebration. Love to all those who knew and were inspired by him. ✊🏿🎺🎶 #RIP #hughmasekela
