Date night. Who needs #instagramhusband when you've got #instagramdaughter? Photos by my own little 7-year-old love bug, budding creative director and personal paparazzi✨🙋🏻💫💕 An evening in the middle of the week that will be spent in heels and make-up instead of harem pants and bare feet deserves a picture! #ootd #ootn #imfancy #sometimes

Me circa 1999? 2000? I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do and I was trying to figure out where I belonged in the world. But...I was excited about life and travel and possibilities in the middle of all that fear and unknown. Thanks for the reminder of where I’ve been and where I can still go, Facebook memories. 💫🙏🏼

New work alert and a few changes made to my website on this Monday morning in the Hudson Valley. This is “Candy Sky” captured off the coast of Santorini this summer. Would like to be there right now, please and thank you. 🙏🏼💫🙋🏻💛

We played tourists in our own city today. I love holiday windows and Saks is one of my favorites every year. We went in early to skip the (insane) crowds, saw the tree and the Rockettes and then zipped downtown to an old favorite place for a late lunch. My idea of a Sunday Funday. ❤️💫 PS—City reflections are my favorite🙌🏼🙏🏼

Friday studio situation with a new painting in progress and my most favorite paint @goldenpaints 💫 I’ve finished and delivered all of my projects, shoots and artwork commissions for 2017. I love to paint and create so much and feel so lucky that this is what I get to do and share with the world. I recently gave an interview about my career and you can check it out if you’d like in the link in my bio. Happy Friday! ⚡️✨

My heart is bursting. I just finished this painting for a beautiful new client. She loved an existing piece that is no longer available so I worked to create a new painting with similar colors and style as well as the colors and feel of the room where the work will live. My inspiration was a personal story she shared with me and I’m so happy with the result I feel like crying. I love creating commissioned works because my inspiration comes from the amazing people who want to fill and transform their space with art and good energy. This is shaping up to be a great week. ✨⚡️💫 #monicashulmanstudio #makeart #artflowsessions #originalartwork

Setting my intentions for the new month and thinking about what my word will be for 2018. Every year I choose a word that becomes almost like a mantra to guide me through. My word for 2017 was “purpose” and there could not have been a better choice. I made a lot of decisions big and small both personally and professionally with that word and thought process in mind. Lots of personal and professional ups and downs in 2017 but I learned and grew a lot from everything. What’s your word? 💆🏻‍♀️🙌🏼 #happyfriday #monicashulmanstudio #monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanportraits #artflowsessions #studiotime

This is a photo of the inside of one of my plastic paint mixing jars. Aka an organic Parmesan cheese container from Whole Foods. A good reminder that art is every where. You just have to look. Happy Wednesday! 🖤👩🏻‍🎨

This tiny detail of a small but spirited wave crashing against a smooth, rocky shore in Greece has been the root of a new-found inspiration and catalyst for an entire new series of black and white studies and paintings. I can’t wait to make some larger pieces after a few sketches I just completed. Swipe to see the color version. Thank you, Greece for every tiny detail that has turned my magical, colorful world into a high contrast, soulful grayscale one. 🖤

When you’re your own client and you print and hang your own work and you never want to leave your own living room. Made this for my home because I deserve a gift sometimes, too. 🙏🏼💥

Because I’m a control freak and feel completely self-conscious having my photo taken (on account of I take 400 images to get one or two I like) I just do all my own portraits. New self-portrait taken in my studio after I hung my (omg a little crooked) Gallery wall. 🙈💥

Things I stopped doing in my late 30s/early 40s: wearing makeup (except for my bold lip bc obviously), dying my hair way too light, apologizing for things that I didn’t do, saying yes to things I want to say no to, over-explaining myself and my choices. Things I started doing in my late 30s/40s: believing in myself (still a struggle but it’s getting better), being in the moment without distractions, making more time for things and people that matter, using all the face serums, learning the importance of traditions, making art (defined loosely) every day. #monicashulmanphotostories

I am working on a new series of paintings in black and white tones. I’ve been exploring themes of chaos and calm and the place in space and time where they meet, and I have been experimenting with different instruments for painting, different textures and different mediums. I’m taking inspiration from a few black and white images of nature from my own archives and a few newer works that I shot this summer here in the lower Hudson Valley where I live and work and on my trip to Greece. This is fairly new for me since I tend to be drawn to colors in my painting work but it’s no question that black and white photography is at the root of all of my artistic endeavors. I’m having a lot of fun with it but it’s also been a big challenge which obviously I love and I’m really drawn to. Sometimes I make things more difficult than they have to be and as I get older I’m learning that that’s not always such a bad thing. Happy Monday! 🖤#monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanstudio #artflowsessions

Inside the studio is where the magic and creativity happens. Outside is where I open up my heart and share it with the world. It’s a daily challenge for me to show this work and to be vulnerable but that’s how the growth happens so here you go. Happy weekend⚡️💫

I’m going to miss this one (and her sister) when I deliver it to my client’s house in a couple of weeks. Watch me paint it in my stories. 👩🏻‍🎨🤩

Just a small, colorful corner of my studio to brighten up an otherwise gray Hudson Valley day.

Current mood. Nothing is black and white....except my recent body of work. This piece is called "Daydream Tonight" and it's the first in a new series of oil paintings. 16x20 canvas ⚫️⚪️ #happymonday #monicashulmanstudio

I shot this street portrait in 2008 in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. I was there visiting my grandmother and showing work at an art fair. One morning before I went to the exhibit I went for a walk with my camera like I did almost daily back home when I was living in Manhattan. It was a meditative, therapeutic process for me to walk the streets and take photos of everything from my feet on the sidewalk to shadows to people like this man having a smoke on his front stoop. Like so many happy accidents this photo chose me because I was in the right place at the right time. I looked up, we looked at each other, I raised my camera, he nodded and I focused and clicked. The photo later went on to be published in Popular Photography and has easily become one of my favorite images. I'm going to start sharing more from my archives on here. I think it's a good exercise for me to see the evolution of my work and process and also it's inspiring me to get back out there and do what I always loved to do. I also love getting and answering questions so please don't hesitate to DM me or ask in the comments. Stay inspired and keep going and growing, friends. Happy Friday! ⚫️⚪️📷#monicashulmanphotostories #monicashulmanarchives #monicashulmanstudio #streetphotography #blackandwhiteonly

Thinking of themes of chaos vs calm, working with texture, easy flow and heavy paint. Leaving the color zone and exploring black and white tones and shades. Out of my comfort zone so I can grow with lack of color and a different medium. ⚫️⚪️ #monicashulmanstudio #artflowsessions #blackandwhiteonly #monicashulmanphotostories
