Woke up this morning, scrolled by a restaurant rec that a reader kindly messaged me on Insta, couldn’t get it off our minds, ended up randomly walking there for lunch a few hrs later.
.
Easily the best bravas (and buñuelos de bacalao) that we’ve tried in Barcelona so far.
.
Social media for the win. 💃🏻

After countless trips around the world with this girl, I’ve gotta say, having her be our very first visitor here in Spain was one of our most special vacays (staycay 🙋🏼‍♀️) together yet.
.
So thankful for a heart-filling week full of smiles and inside jokes and scotch toasts and good questions and adventures galore and IRL hugs. And, as always, so thankful for the friend this girl is to me. We miss you already, @smags1! 💛

That time we booked a girls’ sunny beach getaway to Mallorca for two days...and then the forecast decided to turn unusually cold and rainy...for those two exact days. 😂🌧🙄
.
Soaking up beach views beneath piles of warm blankets, though, with a side of cava and hot tubbing and bookworming and take-out pizza and 24/7 catching up. So no complaints here. 💛

Only this guy would haul (not one, but) two baguettes, a wedge of brie, manchego, pistachios, olives, dijon, berries, chocolate digestives, water and a full bottle of cava up a mountain on a two-hour hike today...so that we could all have a “civilized picnic” overlooking the city. 💛 Love this handsome sherpa.

Literally one of my favorite places in the entire world. Takes my breath away every time. 💛 Favorite things about today’s visit:
.
1) Watching people’s faces (including @smags1) as they walk in the door for the first time. It’s just the best. A nonstop procession of gasps, smiles, reverence, laughter and sheer delight.
.
2) Seeing the 3D models of the original basilica designs...and the progressive models showing how they evolved into today’s design. A lesson in pushing the boundaries. And then pushing and pushing and pushing them again.
.
3) Reading more about Gaudi’s theology, and his fierce belief in the holiness of imagination, nature, and reflected light. Yes, yes and yes.

Paella on the beach? 🤗
.
Paella on the beach with a good friend from home who just flew across the ocean to visit us?! 🤗🎉💛🙌☺️
.
So happy to have @smags1 staying here with us this week. Having her here feels like the puzzle pieces are between our two worlds are being connected in this totally new and fun way. Can’t wait to share everything we love about this beautiful city with her.

After hearing literally everyone we know in Barcelona talk about their famous “calçots”, today we finally did it. We experienced our first calçotada. 🙌
.
But what is a calçot, you ask? (We did too.)
.
Turns out that they are a type of spring onion (think: somewhere between a scallion and a leek) grown here in Cataluña and harvested each year in late January / early February, where they are then famously charred until they are completely blackened on the grill. Then, they are served all-you-can-eat style, where people dig in and strip off the outer layer with their fingers, dip the calçots in huge bowls of romesco, and eat them in a harvest feast along with smoked artichokes, sausages, bread and local wine.
.
We took a day trip up to Montserrat with five Catalan friends to get the full experience...complete with a morning mass at the monastery, a 3-hr hike to work up our appetites, and a 4-hr dinner on the mountain. And I’ve gotta say...it was indeed a day I’ll never forget. So fun, so much local pride, and SO MANY CALÇOTS. (I think we ordered at least 200.)
.
Also, I am so full. 😂

A few hours ago, we got a call from Isabella — who’s watching our dogs back home in Barcelona — sobbing, completely panicked because Fiona had suddenly disappeared at the park and was nowhere to be found.
.
The three of us (and our amazing new friends across Barcelona, THANK YOU) all sprang into action, contacting the police, shelters, posting in local FB groups (the top story in one, being about a dog kidnapping in our neighborhood 😕), scouring the park, doing everything we could to locate our sweet pup.
.
Then an hour ago, Isabella called back and was crying so hard she couldn’t speak...while Barclay and I were clinging to each other in the middle of the street València, waiting for the worst...and Fiona had been found. 😭💛😭💛😭
.
Turns out that while Isabella had been searching the park for hours and had gone to the police station, a sweet family had found Fiona (who we think was spooked and ran when she heard loud drums at the park) and followed her lead...and she led them straight home. They got some neighbors to buzz them in, but apparently they were the ones we didn’t know, and they said Fiona didn’t live in the building. But Fiona stood by our door and refused to move, and the man was certain that she lived there. So — you guys — he stayed and waited with her there for THREE HOURS until Isabella showed up with the police. Everybody cried. Then the police tried to say that Fiona was in the country illegally, and threatened poor Isabella with charges of harboring illegal animals...and she ALSO stood her ground and wouldn’t let them take her. Good grief. Eventually, the police relented.
.
And now? Everyone is home safely. Huge sighs of relief and gratitude all around.
.
(As Isabella said, the whole thing was right of of a telenovela. 😂)

Throwback our trip to Madrid three weeks ago. We decided that the city felt like the older, elegant sister of Spain. (With Barcelona being the bohemian, beach-loving younger child of the family.) Love them both!
.
Excited to continue our adventures around Spain with a quick 48-hour weekend trip tomorrow to Valencia. We’ve learned it’s the official home of paella. So our plans generally include being in a rice coma all weekend. Listos.

Man, today was a good one. A totally normal, hard-working, Spanish-classing, dish-washing, WhatsApp-catching-upping, dog-walking, popcorn-popping, Netflix-watching kind of Tuesday. But one with extra sides of chips and salsa and laughter that made me grateful. 🙏🏻

First time I’ve ever teared up at a parade. 😭☺️😭
.
Seriously. We’d heard that the “Día de los Reyes Magos” (Three Kings Day) was a bigger deal in Spain than Christmas. And that we shouldn’t miss the kings’ “arrival” and parade through Barcelona the night of January 5. But neither Barclay or I were prepared for THIS.
.
First of all, I’ve never seen so many kids in my life. Literally every kid in Barcelona was perched on the curbs lining the parade route for miles and MILES...all with letters to give the kings...all wearing adorable little crowns. Cuteness overload.
.
Second, we’ve decided that Spanish parents are freaking brilliant. I mean, having the kids feed Caga Tió their (the parents’) favorite foods during December was a smart start to the season. But at the parade, they also include 1️⃣ a big moment when toddlers can choose to turn in their pacifiers to the kings so that they can be “grown up kids” (heart-melting) and 2️⃣ an entire wind down to the parade where kids are encouraged to go to bed early that night so that the kings can bring presents (and the parents can stay up and party, ha). Yep.
.
Easily one of our favorite nights in Spain so far, and one that made us love this culture even more. Also, one more moment when we were SO thankful to have our local Catalan friends there with us. They graciously narrated and explained the whole thing (big help)...and also even baked us a traditional “rosca de reyes” (King’s Cake) for our first Noche de Reyes. Blown away.
.
¡Felíz Día de los Reyes, everyone! 🎉
.
Here’s a little summary of each clip:
.
1. Passing out crowns to everyone.
2. The moment when kids turn their letters in to their chosen king’s “post office”.
3. The arrival of the kings! Each had their own cultural procession beforehand. (The African drummers were our fave!)
4. The coal train. Heh.
5. The pacifier surrender. Not pictured — people walking through the crowd with nets where kiddos could place their pacis. Followed by the “go to sleep” scenes.
6. The finale: shooting candy! (Ha, which maybe counteracts the whole going to bed early thing. 😂)
7. Balloon traffic jam as we were leaving.
8. Love these two. 💛

When we asked our friends Nathan and Kerry for their best marriage advice around the time of our wedding, they gave it some thought, and then said “Belly laughs. If you can make each other laugh (hard) at least once or so a day, you’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes.”
.
Truth. ✅

I finally started working on a new blog post today detailing our ever-evolving list of favorite Barcelona recommendations. (Sooo many to share! 🤗) And tonight, we stumbled upon a killer cocktail bar and an authentic Mexican restaurant that instantly jumped to the top of our lists.
.
But most importantly?
.
You guys. WE FINALLY FOUND GOOD CHIPS AND SALSA IN THIS CITY!! Like, legit, thick corn tortilla chips. (Even homemade, I believe.) Ultra-tasty red and green salsa. (Bonus, slightly spicy!) All brought to the table when we arrived, free of charge, plus a refill. (This literally nevvver happens in Barcelona.)
.
I feel like I’ve waited my whole life for this moment. 😁

This Christmas was surprisingly hard.
.
We had both totally talked the talk beforehand about how fun it would be to finally have a wide open day for once — to sleep in, and cozy up with Netflix, and order take out, and make mulled wine, and attend a Catalan mass, and have it just be the two of us for our first “married” Christmas.
.
But mostly, it just felt hard and lonely.
.
Not so much homesick for the States, I think. (Although we miss our friends and family tons.) More just wishing that THIS place felt a little more like home. And being reminded yet again that we’re still very much squarely in the middle of this transition between two worlds we love.
.
I keep finding myself wishing that we could speed up the clock and just find our groove here already...the people and places and rhythms here that will make us feel like we belong. But I know that’s all part of the adventure...and that it takes time...and that eventually things will fall into place. But right now, it just feels hard. And that’s ok.
.
In the meantime, feeling thankful today as I scroll back through my phone (God bless camera rolls) for some moments of light and laughter and love this Christmas. In particular...
.
-✨Lighting candles. (One of my favorite things about the Catholic church.)
-⛪️Finally setting foot inside our neighborhood cathedral for Christmas Eve mass. Took our breath away.
-💻Coming home afterwards to tune into the live stream of our home church in the wee hours of the morning here. Miss you @jacobswell.
-🤣Laughing until our sides hurt whacking Caga Tió until he pooped out our presents. (Even better than I had imagined, hilarious.)
-👩‍🍳One of said presents: the most beautiful sugar cookies that @ponslau (er, I mean Tió) made for us, knowing how much we love Stranger Things.
-😘My amazing husband, who went above and beyond all day to make Christmas feel special...
-🎁...and continued our tradition of exchanging cards for Christmas, instead of gifts. I’ll say it again, this man is such a light in my life.
.
Christmas 2017? ✅ 2018? Onward. 👊🏼

I had no idea when we brought this guy home a few weeks ago that he would end up making us belly laugh *just* when we needed it most on a hard weekend away from home.
.
Feeling thankful today for unexpectedly heartwarming new traditions. And especially thankful for two new friends who graciously spent their Christmas Eve afternoon with us, sitting around the table eating homemade enchiladas, speaking lots of patient Castellano, baking peanut butter cookies, helping us troubleshoot the local bike pass system, toasting with a new-to-us Spanish dessert wine, whacking Tió until he “pooped” out some really cute presents, and — more than anything — just being here with us for a few hours.
.
Needed that today. ❤️

One year ago today, on the winter solstice, my favorite man in the world asked me to marry him. And said that he wanted me to remember that brighter days will always, always be ahead. ☀️
.
No doubt, this past year has been full of some of the brightest, best days of my life. Plus a generous dose of hard, scary, and exhausted ones mixed in there too. We were actually just talking this morning about everything that has happened in the past year, and agreed it still feels completely surreal how much has changed. (So. Much.)
.
But...a year later, a wedding later, a huge move together, and a million little everyday moments in between together...here’s what I know for sure:
.
Brighter days always do come again. And this man I now get to call my husband is an absolute LIGHT in each one of mine. I’m so thankful for every kind of day I get to spend with him, and look forward to every one ahead. 💛
