a URANOPHANE - Ca(UO2)2(SiO3OH)2•5H2O - pseudomorph after a uraninite crystal from the Hoppis Mine, Spruce Pine, Mitchell Co., NC - 3.6mm field of view. A pseudomorph happens when one mineral totally replaces a previous one but retains the form of the first.

Hiya friends and happy new year! If you have a moment check my bio for a link to this weeks auction closing tomorrow full of extremely rare tellurium species! In addition to the above are incredibly rare samples of ottoite, xocolatlite, carlfriesite, markcooperite, thorneite, leisingite, utahite, tlapallite, cesbronite, fairbankite, eurekadumpite and many others. If you have a look I really appreciate it! Many of these species are very seldom offered for sale in this quality and all in the same place.

if you follow my personal account (@yesterdaysnewspaper) here are as promised a few quick and dirty images (scroll) of some of the things @sparroes and i have been finding while exploring an old north carolina lead mine (not to be named yet). this locality is producing colorful, world class microcrystals of linarite, wulfenite, pyromorphite, cerussite, anglesite and brochantite, and in addition is providing samples of leadhillite, wroewolfeite, langite, ramsbeckite and other species that have never been found in north carolina before. it never hurts to get out there and explore old localities for what others may have missed!

About 20 years ago this week I was first introduced to the minerals found at the Foote Mine in Kings Mountain, Cleveland Co., NC. I was just a kid, but I still remember being astonished at what I was looking at under that microscope. That day changed my whole life. 157 species can be found at the mine with 13 of those first found in nature there. It's a very important little corner of the planet for me.

not the prettiest mineral, but this is a very rare crystal group of COSKRENITE-Ce - (Ce,Nd)2(C2O4)(SO4)2•12H2O - from Alum Cave Bluff, Sevier Co., TN - 6.2mm field of view. This rare and unusual mineral was recently featured in a sciencenews.org article on extraterrestrial life. Some scientists believe that rare earth minerals like this one can be indicators to early life on other planets. .
