After two years of adventures, I’ve swapped out my Fuji X-T1 for a Sony α7R II. Still getting used to the handling, but I’m already loving the low-light shooting.

An unexpected sunset

This summer we stayed the night at Sunrise Camp in Yosemite, overlooking the Long Meadow. Considering our campsite faced southeast (not to mention the name), we didn’t expect to see much until the stars came out. Instead, the smoke from the fires to the south lit up the sky as the sun dipped behind the mountains.

I just learned that there's a place in California called Cinder Cone and the Fantastic Lava Beds… which is now the name of my new band.

Flamboyant cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi)

This cuttlefish was stunning, constantly pulsing and changing color as it puttered along the sand. In the wild, flamboyant cuttlefish will use their chromatophores for camouflage while hunting, and will pulse and flash bright, hypnotic patterns when idle or threatened. This color display isn’t just for show — as one of only three known toxic cephalopods, researchers suspect this coloration advertises its deadly muscle tissue.

A decade ago, you could only find flamboyant cuttlefish in the wild. Within the past few years, aquarists at Monterey Bay have cultured and raised generations of flamboyant cuttlefish for research and public viewing. In addition, Monterey distributes these cuttlefish to other marine institutions to continue their studies without depleting the wild population.

…today I learned about cuttlefish.

Embrace the glare

Last weekend at Heart Lake. We scrambled up the crest of a ridge just in time to catch the sun setting over the hills.
