This is what Guy & I are working on this year.
Maybe it is something you want to try too?
How does self compassion manifest for me?
Well.....it is something I try to be mindful of all the time but honestly my busy life of being mum to five boys gets in the way.
Ironically, the reason it matters so much IS my five children.
Teaching that making mistakes, being imperfect, not feeling guilty for putting myself first, not getting things right etc is NORMAL & not something to feel guilty or a ‘lesser’ person because of. Do I want my children to grow up thinking that putting themselves first is a bad thing?
HELL NO!
But we all know that it isn’t easy. And for some it is sooooooo hard.
I am that person.
Two of the ways I want to practice this is to make time every day to walk & to read.
Just 30 minutes of those two things each.
I love feeling fit- three years ago I was the fittest I have ever been in my life & then- the ever tipping life balance scale tipped the wrong way & I lost that fitness.
But- I’m not going to feel guilt about that!
Rather, I am accepting that there were reasons for me that the scales tipped that way - and that’s ok; just how it is- self acceptance.........and here we are today & I’m ready to tip them back.
I have been swimming laps every day & I have just started a new book (everything I have tried since putting down Donna Tartt’s ‘The Goldfinch’ a couple of years ago just hasn’t cut the mustard...... actually, ‘Barracuda’ by Christos Tsiolkis came close- such uncomfortable truths in both....)

On a sleepless night last full moon I dreamt up a little project.
Today I made it happen.
Everyone needs a forest of flowers hanging from the ceiling in my opinion.......

Sitting.
Contemplating.
Listening.
Reflecting.

On Xmas eve our dear family friend, Alun Leach-Jones passed away.
The artwork in this pic is one of Alun’s.
He was a huge influence on my art over my lifetime.
He was the first person I knew in real life who worked as a full time artist, dedicating proper work hours & work routines to his work.
He contributed enormously to the Australian art scene over his lifetime.
Music was enormously important to Alun (as it is to me) & he amassed an enormous collection of music. There was always music playing in his Studio. I remember talking to him once about Handel’s Messiah (I am listening to it tonight which reminded me of him).
I have a beautiful memory of taking my oldest child to visit him in his studio- at the time we were living in Sydney very nearby to his home and in fact my eldest thought Alun & Nola were his grandparents (they have always been so loving to me & my family) - anyway...... Alun was stuck on a painting- an enormous canvas.
He asked my lad to take a brush & make a mark (he was about four at the time). A tiny boy with this massive brush in front of this EPIC canvas- so big that Alun had to lift him up to the easel to reach it.
He took Alun’s brush and swept it across the canvas - Alun was thrilled! He kept that mark - a blue not dissimilar to the blue in the artwork here- and it formed the basis for that monumental piece.
My son & I talked about this moment (he remembers it vividly all these years later) after finding out about Alun’s death.
Such a beautiful memory- for us both.

I’ve been reluctant to paint my #ruthbrutenceramicsbowiebust since he came out of the Bisque firing.
I’m not really sure why but I think I was worried that I would ruin it; that I wouldn’t do him justice.
Anyway- today is his birthday & I set today as the day I would try & at least start on his make-up. Gah!
Once I made the first mark my mental block let go.
The magic of taking that leap. It always feels so monumental but oh so freeing.
I’m thinking of leaving his hair as is- not painting it & leaving the lovely terracotta.
Now to glaze & fire

Flashback to when I painted our Kitchen & Dining room floor.
It’s a few years ago now & it is need of a repaint.
I am thinking of new ideas for floor murals.
I had to paint this floor in well planned sections as we were living in the house & it is our highest traffic area, so I had to leave carefully planned sections to be able to walk through the room.

We visited my parents home in Adelaide a few weeks ago.
Their house is filled with joy everywhere.
Love & memories & colour & artworks from friends and family.
My kids loved looking at my first ceramics & a few of my old paintings (all from my teenage years!)

Thud.
Guy heads back to work today after a 2 week break that felt like 4.
As our littlest said to me this morning in bed ‘It feels weird that Dad has to go to work when we are on holidays.....’ Wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have bills to pay & he could stay at home with us.
Adulting sucks.
Meanwhile I’m enjoying that lots of physical activity means the entire house except me & the littlest are asleep.

We don’t have a lot of rules in our house & we don’t do NewYears resolutions either but these are 4 Family Rules that we stand by every year.
We have a poster that I hand painted that hangs on the wall but last year I made a batch of coffee bowls with our 4 family rules.
Maybe in 2018 I need to make more Bruten Family Rules bowls.......
I hope 2018 is gentle on your being, heavy with laughter, brings you love that fills your heart, that art and music gift your senses & that you choose self compassion and joy

I’m a big fan of buying music old skool style.
We bought a heap of new LP’s & CD’s today.
Here’s a taste of what we purchased.
We are a family of music lovers & musicians & so for us supporting musicians comes by buying real music & not just streaming (musicians are not rewarded for that in a real monetary way).
We also go to see lots of live music.
I can’t imagine life without Music or Art - so I spend most of my spare dollars on ways to keep supporting the creatives that make both.

Home made Ramen for Breakfast this morning.
We are BIG noodle lovers at our place.
I could happily live on Noodles- there are just endless varieties, dry & soupy, with so many different flavours & ingredients from all around the world. We eat them for breakfast, lunch & dinner at our place.
Ramen get a good go at our place pretty regularly.
Here’s my cheats method- an easy & quick base to which you can add whatever ingredients you wish.
True Ramen requires days of intensive step-by-step methods to achieve perfection but this method is a pretty darn good cheat & I have been using this method for years.
There are a couple of rules I adhere to though- DO NOT cook the noodles in the broth pot. Noodles will emit a lot of starch as they cook which will dull the clear broth. Cook the noodles separately, rinse with cold water & then place back in separate cooking pot with a little Sesame oil to help keep the noodles loose but also to add flavour to the final dish.
For the broth:
Place an entire BBQ chicken, with 5 finely sliced pieces of speck (a couple of full bacon rashers will do), 4 whole spring onions, 3 whole carrots & 4 garlic cloves.
Now fill with enough cold water to cover the chicken. Now add a generous glug of Soy (you can taste later for seasoning & add more soy & salt if necessary but I recommend waiting to do this as other ingredients will impart flavour after cooking).
Put on stove & bring to boil. Immediately turn down heat to simmer. Skim surface & allow to simmer for 2 hours.
Remove chicken carcass & strip chicken. Discard bones & reserve meat.
Remove spring onions from broth & check seasoning- add salt & a little more Soy if necessary.
Cook noodles separately as previously advised.
I add eggs & a variety of mushrooms & green veg to broth 4 minutes before serving to add to final dish- this is where you can add whatever you like to your Ramen. My additions vary depending on what I have in the fridge.
Serve the noodles into individual bowls & add ingredients, then finally spoon over the broth & serve.
Be sure to follow the Japanese tradition of slurping noisily to show your appreciation of the Ramen.
ENJOY!
