Troutbeck was an integral component to the civil liberties movement, hosting Sinclair Lewis, W.E.B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall and Langston Hughes (to name a few). #Troutbeck continues to tell a compelling story by melding inspiration from its extraordinary legacy with a modern and considerate approach

The Spingarn Medal is awarded annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (@NAACP) for outstanding achievement by an African American. The award was created in 1914 by Joel Elias #Spingarn, chairman of the Board of Directors of the NAACP and former proprietor of #Troutbeck.
Today we celebrate the life of Henry Thacker "Harry" Burleigh who was the 3rd recipient of the award in 1917. Burleigh was a classical composer, arranger, and professional singer known for his baritone voice. He was the first black composer to be instrumental in the development of a characteristically American music.
