Last Resort Grill

Finally finished “The Catcher and the Rye” nearly a year after my wonderful professor gave it to me. On one of the final pages he highlighted a quote for me. “The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it is bad to say anything to them.”
At the time I was dropping his class with a failing grade because Depression had caused me to fall behind on life and in school. Gifting me this book and highlighting a quote about trying even with the risk of failure was such a beautiful gesture. I will carry the idea with me as I attempt to return to school at UH this Spring. I don’t want to let fear of failure or repeating the patterns of the past hold me back from trying again.
Catcher and the Rye also allows readers to get a glimpse of what life with a mental health condition is like. The misery of the main character was unfortunately relatable for me. Reading it though helped me feel less alone.
I am so thankful for my understanding and generous professor. It is one of nicest gifts I’ve ever received.
