trippingandgrowing Waiting for the skies to open up and pour rain in York but they never did that day. Beautiful gothic cathedral which houses the most complete collection of original stained glass. #yorkminster #traveluk #gothiccathedrals 3h

It's Sunday and a perfect time to climb York Minster and look across the bustling streets below. You can just make out the famous Shambles area, which dates back to the medieval period. Although the climb up can be a bit difficult - some 275 steep steps up the winding tower and 230 feet high - it's well worth it for the view. The first recorded church on the site was a wooden structure built hurriedly in 627 to provide a place to baptise Edwin, King of Northumbria. Mesolithic people settled in the region of York between 8000 and 7000 BC. By the time of the Roman conquest of Britain, the area was occupied by a tribe known to the Romans as the Brigantes. Amazing place with wonderful history to explore. Picture by @timholt Want your photos of Britain to be featured?
