stretch_corleone Celebrating its 12th anniversary today (for West Coast Wednesday, appropriately enough) is Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$, the platinum-selling sixth studio album from beloved West Coast gangsta rap icon Snoop Dogg, who I seem to be posting a lot about lately (and I still got more on the way!). This was Snoop's first album release following his brief stint at No Limit Records, and it is a thoroughly entertaining effort. A lot of people might say that Snoop sold out, with his musical output in the past decade or so leaning heavily towards a mainstream, commercialized pop sound, but ultimately I feel like the man knows how to cater to different audiences while maintaining his irreplaceable signature slick vocal presence with just the right amount of his trademark pimpin' and G-Funk flair (and have fun doing it!). The production lineup on here is impressively diverse, with hot beats from veteran West Coast-based producers E-Swift (of Tha Alkaholiks), Battlecat, Fredwreck, Jelly Roll and Meech Wells, as well as the legendary DJ Premier (who laces both the banger "The One And Only" and the curious "Batman & Robin", which I used to hate but has since grown on me a little), Just Blaze (who cooks up a hot flute-based sex jam with "Lollipop"), Hi-Tek and The Neptunes (who are responsible for the album's hit singles "From Tha Chuuuch To Da Palace" and "Beautiful"). Paid Tha Cost also sports a wealth of high-profile guest appearances from the likes of Jay-Z, Ludacris, Nate Dogg (R.I.P.), old school soul group The Dramatics, Ginuwine, Redman, The Lady Of Rage, RBX, Kokane, Goldie Loc, Charlie Wilson and others. Bottom line: if you love Snoop, you'll love this album. Happy West Coast Wednesday y'all.... 1d
