When Jocelyn McCollum was eight years old, her mother had married Taylor Rhoades. He was a bitter on the outside, soft on the inside FBI Agent. The two had met when he had rescued her on the highway after her car had broken down. Having never had a father around, she had fallen in love with the idea of having him be her dad. He did all the things fathers were supposed to do include telling bedtime stories, bring home lots of presents, and make bad mac and cheese.  Apparently, he was fond of her as well because when she was eight and a half, her mother was shot during a mini mart robbery and instead of letting the new orphan be put into the system, he had adopted her.

  •   aswinchesterauthor Nearly seventeen years later, he continued his fatherly duties with weekly visits to her house for dinner.  He always showed up with a handful of surprise groceries for her and a new treat for the ten year old Great Dane she had rescued from a kill-shelter the year before. The fact that she had only one dog, two cats, and a tank of thirty-two tropical fish was astounding to him. As a vet tech with a soft heart, he had expected a higher pet count when she had bought her own home. “Have you had any more luck with your case... the... what'd you call him?” Jocelyn prompted, pulling her long hair back to avoid adding something extra to the pasta sauce. “The vigilante?” Taylor frowned. “People are calling him the Red Mask... as if that's a creative name.  Man is a nuisance! No one belongs running around attacking innocent people.” “I'd hardly say their innocent, Dad,” she replied. “He's ticking off names from the local PD's laundry list of criminals.” “It's not his job,” he countered hotly. “He's a nuisance that needs to be stopped.  Why do you think I was called in?” "How do you know you're looking for a man?" the auburn haired young woman challenge. She heard his knife on the cutting board pause and turned to offer up a smile. “What? It's a valid question!” “No woman is capable of taking out a three hundred pound man the way he took out the one dealer,” her father assured her. “The vigilante is a man.” “I could do it,” Jocelyn insisted. “You taught me exactly how to.” “You're the exception, sweetheart,” he grinned. “I don't want anything to happen to you.” 24min
  •   aswinchesterauthor “I like to think your vigilante feels the same way about the city,” her words faltered at a loud crash at the other end of the house.  Beside her, Taylor's hand fell to his gun. She scolded, “Oh, stop that!  You know it's just Little Whiskers trying to get on my desk.  He's so fat he can't do it, but thinks he can... could be Big Whiskers instigating, too...” “I don't get why you haven't renamed them,” he responded, returning to mincing garlic and onions as she made for the kitchen's exit. “Because they were both named Whiskers and I didn't have the heart to alter their identities,” she paused in the doorway, laughing. “So Big and Little are their identifying markers.” “Yes, but you named the fat one Little and the tiny one Big.” “Personalities, Dad, not size,” Jocelyn reminded him with another laugh and hurried across the one floor house to her bedroom.  She was nearly to her bedroom when Little Whiskers sauntered past her, throwing his extra weight against her calf with an enthusiastic trill. Before she could stoop to pet him, he wandered off. She turned with expectations to find her bedroom door open and her things a mess from him, but it was not. The door was fully shut and the cat had clearly come from the bathroom.

Her heart pounded faster in her chest.  Briefly, she considered asking her father to look for her, but she dismissed the idea. There was no reason anyone would break into her house. Outside of her pets, she had nothing of value. However, her hand hovered over the doorknob as she considered how all criminals did not need a reason to commit crimes. Once more, she dismissed the idea of fetching her father and opened the door.

A tiny scream caught in her throat as the shadow of a man moved through her room. 23min
  •   aswinchesterauthor “Close the door, angel.  Please?” a familiar voice begged tightly. “Cody?” she demanded, fumbling for the light switch. The moment the room flooded with light, she gasped. Cody Kessler sank to the floor at the foot of her bed, his head resting against the quilt as blood pooled under him from multiple stab wounds. Despite his pretty boy appearance with his golden blond hair and brilliant blue eyes, he was anything but the stereotype he looked to be. It was his big heart for people and kind way with animals that had convinced her to date him. The relationship had been short lived after the murder of his best friend made him push her away.  She shoved the door shut, whispering, “Cody! What in... how the... who did... why are you... in the... and the...” “Breathe, angel,” he chuckled wetly, the sound turning to a cough. “You're forgetting to talk again.” “What did... what happened to you, Cody?” she asked breathlessly, rushing for extra towels from her closet. Despite the small pile she had, she worried it would not be enough. “Did,” he corrected. “You were right the first time... what did I do is the better question?” “What did you do, Cody?” Jocelyn repeated. As they talked, she lifted his shirt and attempted to stem what bleeding she could. Still, blood continued to pour from him. “That vigilante...” 23min
  •   aswinchesterauthor “No,” she shook her head. “You didn't.” “Yes,” he nodded slowly. “I did... but not so well.” “I need to... get you somewhere,” the auburn haired woman stated, her mind racing. “I have to get my dad... he can... he can...” “Don't do that,” Cody spoke over her. “I came to you, not him.” “Wh... wh.... wh...” she faltered and drew in a long breath.  She struggled to talk when she was nervous, angry, and excited.  She hated that part of her, knowing how it hindered her life. “Why did you come here?” “You're the best person I know at taking care of people,” he admitted.  He paused, overtaken by another coughing fit. “I don't call you angel of mercy for nothing, you know.” “You call me that because I stay with all the animals when they die...” she muttered. “I hate when you call me that.” “I'm sorry.” “I can't... I don't... I don't know if I can fix this...” she told him. 22min
  •   aswinchesterauthor “I know you can't fix it.  As I said, I don't call you angel of mercy for nothing,” he confessed.  Her hands trembled visibly as she pressed a towel strongly to his stomach, his words flooring her. “I... I... I...” she stuttered. “Breathe,” Cody reminded her kindly. With every simple movement hurting, he took her hand in his. “I can leave if it's too much.” “I... I can call an ambulance or a doctor or my dad or someone... someone can help... someone has to help... they have to help...” she rambled.  Tears trailed down her cheeks, fueled by fear and helplessness. “They won't get here fast enough. It's okay, angel... I'll be okay...” he whispered as his eyes drifted such.  She watched him closely, noting the blue tinge around his lips and the rapid decrease in his breathing pattern.  Incapable of moving even if she wanted, Jocelyn clung to his hand.  After several minutes, he asked, “Do something for me?” “Anything...” “Keys... in my left pocket...” he began. Carefully, she managed to fish out two silver keys on a ring. Attached to the ring was a delicate angel wing keychain trinket. A slight smile touched her lips at the memory of when he bought it. He caught her studying it and murmured, “I really did like you, you know...” 21min
  •   aswinchesterauthor “I know,” she nodded. “There's a flat in the city, corner of ninth and Michigan,” he told her. “Make sure no one gets it... please?” She turned the keys between her fingers, running her thumb over the curves. They were so simple, yet they held such importance to him. “What's there?” Jocelyn inquired softly. There was no reply. Her gaze shot upward to find his eyes closed once more and his chest still.  She shook him desperately, “Cody? Cody? No... no... no... Cody!” He was gone. 21min
