Normal Dedicated to all Vets of WWII
ww2showcase "You lookin at me?" -- Neat portrait of USAAF fighter ace Lt. Edward McComas of the 118th TRS, with his recently delivered P-51C in 1944. He is credited for destroying fourteen enemy aircrafts in a three month period based out of China, ended up the top scoring ace amongst the "Black Lightnings". The nickname of the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, because of their lightning bolt livery that spanned down the fuselage. They were part of the 14th Air Force's 23rd Fighter Group and did little recon, essentially performing as a fighter-bomber role against the Imperial Japanese ground/air forces in South Central China. Lt. McComas here was noted as being an aggressive pilot and a ballsy squadron commander. On one particular combat mission in December of 1944 he shot down five Japanese aircraft, making him the only "ace in a day" amongst the entire 14th Air Force. -- *Bonus points to the person who can tell us what 1980s WWII film portrayed this squadron performing ground attacks in P-51Ds. 18h

axis_and_allies45 Weird looking photo if you don't know what those lines are. Boeing B-17 heavy bombers flying somewhere over Europe with fighter escorts, 1943.
The crazy lines are actually called contrails, short for condensation trails, which are most often triggered by the water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines. If this wasn't the case, it could just as well be out of a bad 50s alien movie. --------

Normal World War I & World War II
theworldwars A wonderful color photo of silver Boeing B-17Gs of the 532d Bomb Squadron en route to Berlin during a raid on March 1, 1945. B-17G-70-BO Flying Fortress 43-37675, in the foreground, nicknamed "Patches", "Flak Magnet" and "Trudie's Terror" by various crews, failed to return from the raid but was recovered by the Allies, survived the war, and was retired to Kingman, Arizona on December 17, 1945.

plasticmodelling All the decals are applied now! Also a coat of satin varnish. Only a few misses in some places but except that everything looks alright. The big decal with the bull was a real pain to apply, especially on the engine cowl but I managed get it well. #Revell #scalemodel #scalemodels #modelkit #aviation #airplane #aircraft #USAF #P47 #Thunderbolt #modellbygge #WWII #WW2 #USAAF #Ballsout #Vallejo #Modelling #Scalemodelling 3d

peerintothepast B-29A-40-MO Superfortress
Bockscar's temporary tail marking for the atomic bombing mission on 9 August 1945.
Bockscar, sometimes called Bock's Car, is the name of the United States Army Air Forces B-29 bomber that dropped the Fat Man nuclear weapon over the Japanese city of Nagasaki during World War II in the second – and the last – nuclear attack in history. One of 15 Silverplate B-29s used by the 509th, Bockscar was built at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant at Bellevue, Nebraska, at what is now Offutt Air Force Base, and delivered to the United States Army Air Forces on 19 March 1945. It was assigned to the 393d Bombardment Squadron, 509th Composite Group to Wendover Army Air Field, Utah in April.

Bockscar was used in 13 training and practice missions from Tinian, and three combat missions in which it dropped pumpkin bombs on industrial targets in Japan. On 9 August 1945, Bockscar, piloted by the 393d Bombardment Squadron's commander, Major Charles W. Sweeney, dropped the Fat Man nuclear bomb with a blast yield equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT over the city of Nagasaki. About 44% of the city was destroyed; 35,000 people were killed and 60,000 injured. Wiki. #wwii #ww2 #History #bockscar #b29

wartime_aircraft The Liberator 'Hookem Cow' of the 754th BS, 458th BG, 8th AF, with a crewman sitting on top of the nose. This aircraft crashed on takeoff for a mission to Point de Grave, France, on April 14, 1945, when it struck power lines and crashed in a field. That day they only had a partial crew of seven men on board for the mission. Top turret gunner Sgt. Don Neville and bombardier F/O Michael Lavonsky were the only survivors. The rest of the crew was killed in the crash. #b24 #liberator #bomber #plane #usaaf #story #tragedy #worldwar2 #pointdegrave #france #themightyeighth 3d
