- Guerre et Paix, #Tolstoy #Litterature #Book #Citation #French #FrenchBoy #Italian #ItalianBoy #Italia #Menswear #Wear #Zara #Haircut #Mensphysique #Goodmorning #blueeyes #look #PicOfTheDay #InstaMoment #ootd #Style #Stylish #Mode #Paris #Quote 14min

jinahong_ Originally read War and Peace in Anthony Briggs' translation, but re-reading it this year in the Pever & Volokhonsky (who I have mixed feelings about)! Have the Maude on my Kindle for cross-comparison; I don't think I'll be including the Garnett - even if I am rather partial to her Anna Karenina. I'm often partial to things I shouldn't be, like BBC's soapy, melodramatic version of W&P ;) #instadaily #igdaily #spoonielife #endometriosis #chronicillness #igreads #bookstagram #bibliophile #instagood #bookworm #instabook #books #reading #booklover #classics #tolstoy #russian #penguinclassics #vintageclassics #penguin #warandpeace #일상 #데일리 #책스타그램 #독서 #책 #톨스토이 #전쟁과평화 2h

erinlangfordphoto Just finished watching the BBC miniseries War and Peace that has been on cable the last couple weeks. LOVED it! I might have to tackle the book now. Really I might have cried a little at the end. I highly recommend this show and I loved this quote. #warandpeace #love #tolstoy #utahweddingphotographer 4h

mereadsmeloves Just recently read Ivan Turgenev's novella (basically a really short story), First love, with the #bookupidsplatoon bunch.
My first reaction to it was that of indifference, because let's face it, how can a story about a 16 year old boys' love-life (or lack there of), really matter? Of course I was wrong, not entirely, but it definitely had me hooked.
Fiction is losing it's hold of me since a long time, so I was glad to find out that First Love was loosely based on Turgenev's own experiences (except that his real mother was much more horrid)!
.
The story starts with three friends wanting to hear the accounts of each others 'first loves', though only one of them, has a worthwhile experience to share. And thus begins the narration of love at it's vilest- the unrequited love.
Obviously, the most interesting character was Zinaïda, whose traits the author perfectly describes as 'cunning and carelessness, artificiality and simplicity, calmness and vivacity', the girl of 21, who mystifies the reader throughout the book.

Although the book ended somewhat abruptly, and gave some characters an uncalled for fate, it in no way feels like a short lived story. Packed with every emotion of youth so masterfully, written as if it's not written at all, finished with hardly any deeper meanings, Turgenev, somehow, manages to succeed.
Turgenev, wrote on subjects similar to those found in Dostoyevsky's and Tolstoy's works, but he did not approve of the religious (he was considered to be an agnostic) and moral preoccupations that they often brought to their works, and vice versa. Indeed, Tolstoy actually despised Turgenev for the most part of his life (Don't believe me? Well, once traveling together, Tolstoy actually wrote in his diary that 'Turgenev is a bore'), the hatred grew so much that later on Tolstoy even challenged Turgenev to a duel! And so, basically, they didn't speak to each other for 17 years. Although later on, our gallant Leo, did apologize.

What a dramatic relationship they shared, the cherry on top being it's sweetest ending, with Turgenev pleading to Tolstoy that, "My friend, return to literature".
