astronomy45 Comet McNaught Over New Zealand

Comet McNaught was perhaps the most photogenic comet of modern times -- from Earth. After making quite a show in the northern hemisphere in early January of 2007, the comet moved south and developed a long and unusual dust tail that dazzled southern hemisphere observers. In late January 2007, Comet McNaught was captured between Mount Remarkable and Cecil Peak in this spectacular image taken from Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand. The bright comet dominates the right part of the above image, while the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy dominates the left. Careful inspection of the image will reveal a meteor streak just to the left of the comet. Today, Comet Siding Spring may become the most photogenic comet of modern times -- from Mars.

ocastronomy Hubble Against Earth's Horizon 10 Nov 1997

The Hubble Space Telescope hovers at the boundary of Earth and space in this picture, taken after Hubble's second servicing mission in 1997.

Hubble drifts 353 miles (569 km) above the Earth's surface, where it can avoid the atmosphere and clearly see objects in space.

wegagurl That's me inside of the 50m diameter antenna of The Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) which is the world´s largest single-dish steerable millimetre-wavelength telescope. Situated on the summit of Volcán Sierra Negra at an altitude of 4600m. This pic was taken in 2007 when the telescope was still under construction. #astronomy #astronomer #science #universe #telescope #astrowega #space 3h

atheist_astronomer A beautiful image of my favourite planet in our solar system. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest in our solar system, it has a mass more than twice that of every planet in the solar system combined and is one thousandth the size of the sun. Jupiter is what's known as a gas giant, (gas giants in our solar system include: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) and is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, and trace amounts of other elements. Although the planet is composed almost entirely of gas its believed that the planet has a solid core. It has over 67 moons, including the famous moon Europa (which is also my favourite moon) and is one of the best bets to search for alien life. Jupiters moon IO can be seen in this image. IO is one of the most geologically active worlds in the solar system, if you look closely you can even see some of its volcanic eruptions in this image. With the large amount of moons that Jupiter has you could even call it its own little "solar" system.
