indiastretched A quirky sight in the old city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Elephants are not an uncommon sight in Ahmedabad. A couple used to pass each morning by my college when I was studying at NID. Since time immemorial, the elephant has been an integral part of Indian culture and heritage. They have been used for labor, transport, hunting, war, art and religion. They have also been symbols of royal authority and sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism. The elephants of Ahmedabad serve in the Jagannath Temple where they have the first glimpse of Krishna, his brother Balaram and sister Subhadra, during the annual chariot festival. They also lead the procession which winds 14 km through the city, similar to more famous Rath Yatra at Puri, Orissa. They are extremely popular and locals feed them bananas in return for a blessing. This is one brave banana seller making business, literally right under the nose of a elephant. 1h
