More polished production on the second album. Too bad they split up.

stretch_corleone Marley Marl, one of the greatest producers in hip hop history, dropped his classic debut album on Cold Chillin' Records 26 years ago today. In Control, Vol. 1 featured Marley's innovative sampling style in full effect, allowing him to be hailed as one of hip hop's all-time most influential and respected beatsmiths. To my knowledge, it is likely the first full-length hip hop release credited to a producer as an artist. The album is also known for showcasing the Juice Crew, a collective of stellar emcees (several of which were established in their own right at that time) held together by Marley's creative glue under the Cold Chillin' umbrella. The standout track is "The Symphony"; often cited as hip hop's best and first true posse cut, the track features back-to-back rhyming from legends Masta Ace (making his recording debut), Craig G, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane. Seriously, this is what a posse cut is supposed to sound like. In Control, Vol. 1 also features tracks with Juice Crew alumni Biz Markie, MC Shan, Tragedy Khadafi (billed here as Percy Tragedy) and Roxanne Shanté, as well as the late, great Heavy D. I had already owned the (long out of print) first pressing of the album, but the Special Edition was a must-buy. The package features the original album with remastered sound and audio commentary from Marley, as well as a second disc containing rare bonus tracks (most notably, the "Droppin' Science" remix (which I prefer over the album version) and two excellent Juice Crew posse cuts: 'Evolution" and "Juice Crew All-Stars"). The Special Edition also includes extensive liner notes featuring brief descriptions for each song by Marley, full album lyrics and an essay from hip hop journalist Brian Coleman. Absolutely fucking essential. 20h
