victorvonfrankenstein I've decided to start cutting some more fat from my collection and focus more on niche labels rather than big studios.

I'm a fan of quality special features and it seems like less and less effort is being put into that area of home media releases from big studios.
This process will involve hard decision making that the inner collector in me is going to hate me for, but from now on I'm going to be less of a mindless consumer.

In celebration of this decision, here's a box of beautiful new Criterion's from blowitoutahere's sale. Time to sell sell sell and make the money back.

  •   thehorrordoctor I watched Persona a couple weeks ago, I really enjoyed it 7d
  •   golden_age_ @victorvonfrankenstein That doc should be really interesting. I think Bergman wrote Persona while he was sick in the hospital, so he decided he wanted to do something totally different. I think that's why I like it so much. This was his first movie where he kind of broke out of the formula he'd been using. I'm not a huge Bergman fan, but this and Fanny and Alexander are his best imo. I've heard great things about Tokyo Story. Do you think it's worth a blind buy? That's interesting about Ozu. Kind of reminds me of how Jane Austen never married but only wrote about relationships and marriage. Maybe that proves that the longing for something one doesn't have gives the potential to produce great art. I've been considering getting Medium Cool for a long time. It looks so cool and I'm interested in seeing Haskell Wexler's work as a director, but the political part is not interesting to me. Have you seen World on a Wire? I'm watching it now, and it's amazing! I'll definitely be picking this one up during the next sale. 7d
  •   victorvonfrankenstein @golden_age_ that's interesting, I look forward to seeing it. I'm becoming a fan of his. Yeah absolutely. The special features are terrific too which makes it an easy blind buy. That's an interesting comparison and a likely theory. We're often at our most creative and passionate when we're lacking something we need. That's my exact feelings about Medium Cool. It looks so good but the political side doesn't interest me. I have seen World on a Wire and I own it. It's so good. I watched the whole thing in one session. I was completely engrossed. 6d
  •   victorvonfrankenstein @thehorrordoctor I've heard nothing but great things and I have really been enjoying my Bergman kick. I'm so keen! 6d
  •   golden_age_ @victorvonfrankenstein Might just have to pick up Tokyo Story along with World on a Wire. Since I didn't get anything during the B&N sale I'll probably be spending close to $400 during the flash sale. God, that's insane. Lol 6d
  •   victorvonfrankenstein @golden_age_ It seems insane but if you're not picking many or even any up as they're released outside of sales, you're actually saving quite a bit. I try to do a bit of both because otherwise I fall massively behind. I'm still like 50+ titles behind in my CC collecting. Anyway, if you're unsure of a title, take advantage of that whole Hulu thing you Americans have and watch it first. IMO Tokyo Story is a safe blind buy but you may disagree. 6d
  •   golden_age_ @victorvonfrankenstein Yeah, but I'm insanely careful with my money. I feel guilty anytime I buy something over $20. Haha I don't even have Hulu or Netflix because I get by watching what they put for free on Hulu every week and TCM plays a lot of good stuff. That's how I got to watch World on a Wire. Also, since you're getting interested in Bergman, they're having a marathon in about a week. Gonna be playing tons of good stuff like Wild Strawberries, Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, and his trilogy. 6d
  •   golden_age_ @victorvonfrankenstein Are you planning on getting the entire collection? More power to you, man. I'm trying to stick just to the essentials. I'll end up broke otherwise. Haha 6d
