sacred_vinyl The Mamas & Papas "People Like Us" ABC/Dunhill Records 1971 | As the dawn of the 70's approached it seemed like the whole world was in a flux. The Mamas & Papas had anchored in a sound of the 60's that was slowly coming apart by the seams by the time of this release. The group had been broken up for close to 3 years and John Phillips had gone on to record the utter masterpiece "Wolfking Of LA" as well as scoring music for the super rad human flight flick "Brewster McCloud" by Robert Altman. John had been battling a heroin addiction as well as struggling to find his center after the divorce from fellow bandmate Michelle Phillips. You'd think after all that post 60's comedown drama that this may be the equivalent of a toddler tossing pasta against the wall to see which piece sticks the longest. At least that's kinda what I had imagined anyway for the last ditch effort of the darlings of sunshine pop. I was pretty far off. I should have known better especially since "Wolfking" is basically peerless. "People Like Us" kicks up in a daze of swirling soft rock electric sitar and those gorgeous harmonies that stole your heart in "California Dreaming" so many years before. John might have used all the heavyweights on his solo album but he delivers the delights on this one like the crackhead he looks like on the back cover photo sporting a wife beater and a hobo beard interestingly enough with shaved armpits. Mama Cass Elliott also gets benched a lot from this surprise killer. That's not to say that her and Michelle and Denny don't knock em slam out of the park on each and every song. The seemingly obvious throwaway "European Blueboy" will have you doing the funky island chicken in no time. As will the bouncy and oh so fun road trip jammy "Pacific Coast Highway" with it's infectious melody and killer group harmos. "Snowqueen Of Texas" features some majestic low key lead vocals from Michelle. It kinda reminds me of the stuff Carol King was writing while she was still in the band The City. "Pearl" is a ode to the then recently fallen Janis Joplin. This album may have been a pre cursor to the Jerry Springer show in ways but it others it showcases the beauty they once had! 2w

sacred_vinyl Charley D And Milo "S/T" Epic Records 1970 | I had this really great story I heard once going through my head the first time I heard this majestic album and every time I hear it that story rings in my mind. A southern teenager in the late 60's who grew up in rural Alabama discovers LSD and trying to figure out creative things to do while he was tripping thru the cosmos was to go to the department store where they sold albums and hang out with his friends. The friends of course being whatever super trippy cover he could get his paws on. Charley D And Milo are a group I could see him getting struck by as the album's cover art is just gorgeous! The grooves within' are totally the same. This is a album that perfectly compliments a warm summer's eve and watching the sunset off in the distance. Charley D. Harris and Lon Milo Duquette had hooked up together as a songwriting partnership but it wasn't long before they formed this group. They specialize in a stunningly beautiful brand of cosmic country pop with shades of psychedelia and baroque pop and straight ahead country rockin'! Interestingly enough when I looked into the back story on these cats it came up that Lon Milo Duquette went on to be a writer and speaker of the occult and the tarot as well as specializing in the life of Aleister Crowley. The first thing I thought about after reading that is the opener here "Theme From Mount Oread" with it's joyous folk rock groove and killer mystical bend to the lyrics. It sets the pace for this fantastic set of instant charmers. "The Word Is Love" is a great upbeat country pop jammer. The message is simple and it's LOVE! Those were the days. They tackle a Dylan tune in "I'll Keep With Mine" which I believe he had originally given to model and actress pre-Velvet Underground Nico. The originals are where the band of course shimmer the most. "Inner Man" is a beautiful baroque style piece with angelic group harmonies. Like "Om Sweet Om" the backing string section perfectly complements the arrangement. The floating feeling I get from "Om Sweet Om" keeps me coming back again and again. These guys were the perfect balance of rural sensibilities melting with POPBLISS! 2w

sacred_vinyl Forever More "Yours" RCA-Victor Records 1970 | In the late 60's there were literally thousands of underground bands who were trying to "make it" as they say. Sometime's though even though they were blessed with the chance to cut and release a album that didn't mean it was going to sell. Forever More not only had the opportunity to make a record but also star in a film about groupies and the life of a touring band cutting there teeth. The movie is called "Permissive" and it came out in 1970 along with the "Yours" album. The soundtrack features cuts from the album and once you see the film it may make the songs stand out and have more meaning and depth. Onnie Mair and Alan Gorrie would also go on to stardom with the group Average White Band in the years to come. "Yours" features some excellent songwriting and stellar playing throughout. The sound is a interesting hybrid of proggy folk rock with even shades of proto power pop tossed into the mix. The epically beautiful "We Sing" showcases a clear Beatles influence wrapped around the leaning of psychedelic era Traffic. Forever More were Scottish and have that lovely landscape to inspire these gorgeous tunes. "Beautiful Afternoon" is a fantastic example of this glorious sound. Mick Travis's guitar work is out of this world and really gives these songs so much texture. Travis had come from the Robert Plant and John Bonham pre-Zeppelin group The Band Of Joy. The folk rock roots of Band Of Joy clearly rings out in the jazzy folk mid section of "Good To Me" with it's super slinky yet oh so groovy riff. The jazzy elements sound like they had been maybe listening to Manfred Mann Chapter Three as they share a overall sound and vibe. It has some boogie tossed about here and there but they always kick things into another interesting gear and never sound like a unimaginative UK blues rock band. It's a record that will grow and grow on you with each listen and especially after you see the excellent flick "Permissive" and the songs start to really pop out and give clear perspective to this fantastic album. I was told recently by a psychedelic guru that this album never gets the love it deserves. Change that PRONTO! 2w

sacred_vinyl Chamaeleon Church "S/T" MGM Records 1968 | Truly gifted people always have to start somewhere and sometimes in the most unlikely of places is where you may find the incriminating evidence. In this case though there is nothing incriminating about this marvelous album. Chevy Chase is known to the world as a supernova comedian and actor but many people may be still in the dark that he was a very talented musician first and foremost. Chase played drums on this project as well as handling lead vocals on "Here's A Song". Chamaeleon Church is a group from the Boston area that was marketed as part of the Bosstown Sound like Ultimate Spinach and Beacon Street Union. The Church though at least on this album have a sound that's closer to other New England group's like Orpheus. They come off like a super dreamy psych pop version of that, however they were supposedly a tight hard rocking band who became disenchanted with the record company's vision for them. All of that aside the group made one hell of a beautiful popsike killer! "Come Into My Life" is a upbeat bouncy baroque psych popper that injects great energy right from the gate. "Camilla Is Changing" could be one of the dreamiest songs of the late 60's. You can easily get lost in the beautiful reverby melody and the shimmering group harmonies. Ted Meyers is the main songwriter and after the Church called it quits he made his way over to the last incarnation of The Ultimate Spinach. "Blueberry Pie" is psych pop bliss! It clearly should have been the single pulled from the album and NOT the semi slow and ultra hazey "Camilla Is Changing". It has a gorgeous dreamy break where I believe Chevy plays the Roxichord. Other strong highlights include "Tompkins Square Park" & "Flowers In A Field" as well as Chase's lead in "Here's A Song". Chevy has a really nice voice and although the other members don't seem to be lacking in the vocal department it would have been cool to hear more Chase lead songs in the song cycle. "Off With The Old" has some nice use of Sitar in the mix to give the song some texture. While there are countless pop curios of the 60's begging for another chance with future generations this one DESERVES IT! 2w

spacelab9 Hands-down best find at this past weekend's record fair... SPIDERMAN "rock reflections of a superhero" LP with the extremely elusive original cover art shown here in this 1975 comic ad. More common version shows a full-profile shot of Peter Parker looking into a mirror and seeing Spiderman in his reflection. Cover art for both versions by the legendary John Romita Sr.

sacred_vinyl Curt Newbury "Half A Month Of May Days" Verve Forecast 1970 | Billy Crudup's career may have started before you think. Maybe he is a vampire who gets tired of the same moniker every 20 or so years & he changes his whole vibe up. Who know's maybe he was once a king of some far off mystical kingdom? Curt Newbury's one off psychedelic folk rock curio is just another in the seemingly never ending line of hippies who somehow got a chance to make a record. Unlike so many other's though that are rather questionable at best Curt's album is FANTASTIC! I mean I'm sure that has a lot to do with his backing band being Kaleidoscopic (US) and Rick "SUPERFREAK" James rounding things out. Newbury showcases his strong songwriting chops right from the get go! "S & C See Me" with it's groovy liquidly cosmic vibes smashing into earnest folk rock goodness. This album reminds me of another Verve Forecast album "Moonstone" by Tommy Flanders. It has that super loose jammy quality but the musicianship is peerless. You can tell that Kaleidoscope was having a blast backing up Newbury as each tune sounds so spirited and soulful. "To Marcia" has a beautiful soaring melody and a killer steady folk rock beat that will have you bopping right on along. "Let's Hang Some Pictures Tonight" has a somber cowboy psychedelic vibes going on that quickly picks up pace and blasts into a cosmic country jammer. Curt also was blessed with really soulful pipes that easily get the job done on this album. He is shown thumbing on the back cover with his guitar and a sign that just says FAR AWAY and when I hear this album it has always taken me to the far reaches of my mind's eye. It's subtle and unassuming but without any doubt pure magical If you are a fan of psychedelic folk rock with cosmic country vibes then you must search this groover out! You will be giving it many many spins on the turntable. Sit back and float down stream with this beaut 2w
