thisisdizzle Missile America, Jill Nye, Julie Anne Bruise, Ida Slapter, Knots O’ Pretty, Sher Nobyl, Slutnik, Punk N’ Pie…those are some derby names that I’ve ran into this year. At first glance, these names easily could make up to be some bizarre throwback professional wrestling names at a state fair; it's almost comical. But beneath those names, there’s a genuine effort of these women wanting to put a stamp onto their identity. Beneath those names, they have all have stories about how putting on a pair of skates changed them. That change, however, is not some strange diabolical transformation of characters rather it’s revelation and furthermore, an epiphany for their truest self. “I love to hit, I love derby because of that. And I become more careless about what other thinks about me; this is me” said Punky (@punk_n_pie) or Anna but that’s not just her sentiment; almost everyone I’ve talked (and shot) to personally expressed the similar sentiments. It’s essentially act of taking the power back to what was rightfully theirs in the first place. Being a woman and moreover, being a person is their responsibility and rights, not the society’s. They essentially decide what’s ‘feminine’ for them as they willingly showcase their exuberance through make-ups and nicknames then also fulfill the need of release aggression at the same time; it’s immensely refreshing. I admit that I am still struggle to address them with derby names as I’d prefer to call them by government names but these eclectic group of women are leaving such a lasting impression as I get to know them more and more. Besides, half of my friends call me Dizzle so I can’t really complain much about nicknames. BTW, it's getting cold out, let's go into studio. 2w

thisisdizzle The joy of doing a long-term project is allowing myself to be very flexible about nearly everything. Hence, I like to explore other layers about derby that goes beyond all the jams on the flat track. There are more than handful of photographers being presented at the every bout in Key Arena, snapping away the best action and while all the excitement is zoomed into jammers and blockers, I tend to resort myself to the back of the arena where so many other things are happening. It's one of many elements that I've been exploring. Skaters warm-up, they do team drills, some just zone out as they anticipate for their bout coming up, they check equipments with refs, or just being dumb silly. I like to shoot them when they are in their candid moment; it adds layers. I knew that photographing about derby would draw attention from people who has no idea what it is but I also want to create similar sensation with people who are already in it by highlight things that are so typical to them that it gets overlooked from time to time. Balancing the dichotomy of preserving memories and creating new informations have been one of many challenges that I'm having in makings of this series. 2w

thisisdizzle This is a photo from my very first derby bout back in February. Honestly, I don't remember too much from that night. I do remember just running frantically from one end of arena to another to find a spot to shoot but that's about it. I wasn't nervous but it was just this weird loop of being numb and jittery the whole night. While I savored the fact that I was on the floor of Key Arena to the fullest, I was so clueless; I knew absolutely nothing about the sports. I was put into a situation that was so foreign in my realm that I didn't even have a room to be nervous or anxious; I was more numb if anything. Things have done changed little bit since then. I still learning a lot about the sports in terms of nuance but I can actually explain at least the bare basics of it. I am also exploring other layers beneath it that makes derby scene what it is. I'm able to anticipate better between plays or 'jams' and then fire away. There's this sensation of tackling something I was so foreign to; it's a fun challenge. I can't say I necessarily 'welcomed' that challenge at first but I can say I wanted to make the best of it every time and have the most fun when the challenge was being presented. This whole year, looking back, was a giant chunk of learning process in every aspect beyond my imagination and derby was right there with me both as a person and as a photographer. It's been good. 2w

thisisdizzle Based in Seattle, Rat City Roller Girls is one of the biggest roller derby league in the world if not the biggest. I’ve had a pleasure of working with them throughout this year for my personal yet-to-be titled photo documentary series that’s due out on April 2015 (and so glad to be back for yet another season, I might add!). Photographing something that's completely foreign to me was challenging enough to begin with but little did I know that it was going to challenge me on so many different spectrum. While ‘Combatants’ project continues to allow me to grow, I can confidently say working with these amazing people throughout this year truly awaken me with a completely different mindset on confidence, community, family, womanhood and more. This is the series about one of the most extraordinary yet sweetest and thoughtful people that I’ve met in my whole life thus far. 2w
