herestohealthywomen FIBER!!!! Are you getting your 25 grams a day?? According to a study done by the Cleveland Clinic you're probably not. On average most women only get on 15 grams a day. (P.S. For you Men they need 38 grams a day!) Track for just a few days, at first, to see how much fiber you actually eat. I love @myfitnesspal It's a free app I've been using the last two weeks since starting to track my #macros
What's the big deal with Fiber? Fiber speeds up the time it takes for food to pass thru your digestive system and out of the body. Because of this Fiber regulates blood sugar and keeps gut bacteria where it should be.
The study found a high fiber diet with high fiber cereals such as oats and barley and 100% whole grains can reduce heart disease ️ lower triglycerides (bad cholesterol), improve glycemic control (blood sugar regulation) and help you loose weight. 🍋🍐🍿🏻🏻

premed_kat28 Lessons From Peru Day 5:
Teamwork
On our final day of volunteering in Peru, we finished up Medlife's 100th staircase! Throughout the week, different groups would come in and work on different parts to build this staircase. I was lucky enough to be able to paint the logo, and my initials will be there forever :). But if we all hadn't worked together and worked with the people in the area, we wouldn't have accomplished something amazing like this. You can't go about treating patients alone. It takes doctors, nurses, therapists, etc. and being able to work together on that team to make a patient's life is very important.
Stairs are incredibly important in these areas because they allow people to movie around safely without slipping on rocky, dirt hills. My week in Peru with Medlife was the most amazing time of my life, and I hope to be able to go back in the future. I hope you all enjoyed my little series, it meant a lot to me :). #doctor #surgeon #mylife #science #med #medlife #medicine #volunteer #medstudent #md #surgeon #premed #premedlife #premedstudent #premedproblems #peru

  •   v_bellisssima @aminekhadiriokc as a Nigerian I understand your point but what people do not realize is that although there is poverty in the US, it is not as extreme as some places in Africa or Latin America. I believe going abroad gives students (of any major) a sense of appreciation for not only the community around them but also globally, it gives them a new perspective of struggle and may even open their minds to what can be done in the world. Although there is so much you can learn from communities around you, you can take back so much more from communities outside the US. Besides the more health students that come to African or LA countries the more awareness they raise like @premed_kat28 is doing and the more people we have volunteering their time to improve the quality of life and health in these countries. 30min

nataliecrawfordmd Sometimes you just have to put one foot in front of the other…especially if you are struggling with a mental health disorder.

May is #mentalhealth awareness month. I wish I could say that this is a topic that I don’t deal with very often, but this could’t be farther from the truth. 😕

The psychological aspects of infertility can pose a significant burden on many couples. In fact, many couples believe that infertility is a time of great life stress. The prevalence of mental health disorders is higher in patients suffering from infertility as compared to those without. Specifically, depression and anxiety have been demonstrated in approximately 40% of infertile women, which is twice that of fertile women. Despite the fact that depression and anxiety are common in infertile patients, only 21% of patients with a psychiatric disorder received treatment.

The relationship between depression and infertility is complex. Certainly infertility makes depression worse, and it appears depression might make infertility worse (due to changes in stress hormones). Research I’ve done looking at depression and infertility also shows that women with depression are less likely to follow through with infertility treatments after an initial visit. This means these women suffering with depression may have even less of a chance of achieving the ultimate goal — pregnancy.

A special thanks to @freudandfashion for sharing #mentalhealthmonth tidbits every day this month
