mandybarkerphotography This image shows Lap Sap Wan (Chinese rubbish beach) a relatively inaccessible beach I visited in Hong Kong last month. The estimated total amount of litter on this beach was 185 tonnes, or 12 million pieces. It would require 46 refuse collection vehicles with a 4 tonne capacity to remove all the litter. Among the various materials plastic accounted for 90% of the total...

mandybarkerphotography "Living on Plastic"
Gooseneck barnacles living & growing on a Chinese plastic drinks bottle collected from Lap Sap Wan beach in Hong Kong.
9 volunteers recovered over 2000 plastic bottles in half an hour to begin the clean up operation of this beach.
(As well as living on plastic studies have found micro plastic particles in the gastrointestinal tracts of Gooseneck barnacles collected from the North Pacific Ocean).

Many thanks to Smithsonian for allowing me this takeover opportunity to share my work with a wider audience.

Thankyou to the 'Plastic Free Seas' organisation that are dedicated to advocating change through education & action in Hong Kong, and also to the WYNG Foundation for supporting my work through the Masters Photography Award.

"NEW SPECIES of fish found in Hong Kong waters"
A new species of fish, given the name 'SSS' has been found to inhabit shorelines around the world, with confirmed sittings in North America, Europe & now Asia. The SUSHI SOY SAUCE plastic fish can be found from the seas surface down to the ocean floor. Evidence suggests that this fish could cause physical damage to ecosystems, be ingested by other marine life, or provide rafting - transporting other species that affect the biodiversity of other lands.
Therefore this fish is considered a THREAT to the marine environment where there is a good chance it will outlive the life expectancy of all other marine creatures.

smithsonianmagazine 'Hong Kong Soup: Lotus Garden' (detail)
A collection of different species of waste artificial flowers that would not exist at the same flowering time in nature and should not be found in the ocean. The Lotus flower has associations with beauty as early as Guofeng in the book of poetry written 3,000 years ago, where concerns were with the common senses of nature and everyday life, the underlying message in this image.
(Includes; lotus flowers, leaves & petals, peony, carnation, rose, blossom, holly, ferns, castor & ivy leaves. Flowers recovered from various beaches in Hong Kong over the past 3 years).

arashaaz During a walk in Rotterdam Noord this afternoon we saw a seagull that got its wing stuck in a plastic bag and was clearly exhausted. The staff of Kookpunt lent us a ladder and a stick, and as we tried to pull it to the side of the water more people joined to help the gull with dog leashes, and one young boy even rushed to the nearby market to buy rope and a hook. Together we managed to catch the bird and right that moment the animal rescue service arrived to save its day and bring it to their shelter for treatment. This event made us all very aware of the consequences of plastic waste. Don't throw your bags away. 2w
