instasg It was great time yesterday, glad to see you all at #instameetSGjul14. It was definitely interesting to browse such a huge pasar malam - full of joyful crowd, great food and festive goodies. Some of us agreed, it's a feast for street photography too with so many things happening and so many interesting stuffs they sell there.

Thanks heaps everyone who made it with us, thanks for those who stayed until late too at Sinpopo sharing the old school food. Really, what is instameet without Makan session huh?

We look forward to your wonderful frames, please don't forget to tag with #instameetSGjul14 - so that we can browse and pick one or two to share with many who couldn't make it.

And as usual, we would like to thank you one by one, apologies if we missed anyone who might have joined later - please let us know if you couldn't find your name. •

instasg Join us as we will browse the Pasar Malam at Geylang Serai, and try to capture the festivity of Ramadan. When the sun sets, we will sit down for some Malay food and drinks with our Muslim brothers and sisters for their Iftar (breaking fast). After that it will be more interesting as it will get darker and more crowded.

See you at Paya Lebar MRT at 5:30 PM. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking, and we will also share few tips for you to keep in mind before we start our hunt for great street scenes.

Let us know if you're coming!

instasg This Saturday we will go for a photowalk at Geylang Serai. After the Iftar (breaking fast) with our Muslim brothers and sisters, it might get more challenging for the street photography with crowd and low light. Few have asked, "what are we going to do?" - we browsed and found some good tips from the Digital Photography School site, about street photography at night:

In the brightest areas, you will be able to photograph at 1/250th, but most of the time it will be best to use a shutter speed somewhere between 1/160th and 1/60th. You need to have: steady hands; a wide-angle focal length; and to stop your own motion completely to be able to photograph handheld at speeds around 1/60th, but with some practice it can be done.
~
You should always pay attention to the main light sources in a scene, no matter where or when you are photographing, but at night this becomes even more important. Start by finding a beautiful light source, or an area with good lighting, and wait around for something to happen.
~
You don’t need to freeze motion perfectly when photographing at night for the image to still look great. They need to be interesting and look good and that’s what counts. Also, at shutter speeds around 1/60th to 1/30th, you can experiment handheld with slight blur, where your subjects are somewhat sharp but have a little motion to them. It’s a great way to add an energetic feeling of movement into an image.
~
Depending on where you live, going out at night with a camera is not always the safest idea. Travel light with equipment and be careful about where you go. Use your best judgment on who to photograph and always stick with a friend. You don’t want to suddenly find yourself in a bad situation.

We shared the article on our Facebook Page. For more details and some other tips, please visit Facebook.com/InstagramSingapore - and if you don't want to miss what we share, then follow lah!

See you on Saturday!

instasg One of the oldest apartments still surviving and we hope they will still be there for sometime, the estate of Dakota Crescent, located off Old Airport Road, is a peaceful neighbourhood consists of 14 white blocks of flats of not more than 10 storeys tall. Imagine the life in Singapore during the 50d and 60s - can you send us back in time with your pictures?
~
As it's a perfect setting for some oldies mood, feel free to bring your props or even dress like 2 generations before us. Borrow something from your grandpa and grandma, or better still ask them to come along to tell us some stories of "when I was your age ah..."
~
Join us on Saturday, 21st at 10 AM as we roam this antique neighborhood. The abandoned old apartment, the classic playground, or maybe the resident cats - choose your object as we focus on photo-taking for at least an hour in this area. Let us know with a comment below if you're coming, and also feel free to ping your friends here to let them know too!

instasg The estate of Dakota Crescent, located off Old Airport Road, is a peaceful neighbourhood consists of 14 white blocks of flats of not more than 10 storeys tall. It is one of the oldest estates still surviving, and we hope they will still be there for sometime despite the rapid development of private properties surrounding it.

Dakota was more lively when the nearby Kallang Airport was in operation from 1937 to 1955. The name itself was named after American transport aircraft Dakota DC-3, which was massively produced during the World War II and a common plane to land at Kallang Airport. Another variation of the origin of the name is to commemorate the air disaster on 29 Jun 1946, when one of the Royal Air Force’s Dakota aircraft crashed at the Kallang Airport in a thunderstorm. All passengers on board were perished. We choose to believe the first version though.
