itsbetteronblack - Live At Leeds - The Who - Decca/MCA - Recorded 14 February 1970 University Refectory, University of Leeds, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire - Released 16 May 1970 - Produced by The Who, Kit Lambert & Jon Astley -- Ok. You may come at me with Frampton Comes Alive, Kiss Alive, Cheap Trick At Budakon, Little Feat Waiting For Columbus, Johnny Cash at Folsom, at San Quentin, at Madison Square Garden, Deep Purple Made In Japan, Allman Brothers at The Filmore East, Monterey Pop, Woodstock, Neil Young Time Fades Away, Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, any number of Grateful Dead live recordings, Any number of live Jazz recordings or Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies, but for my money this is the greatest live album ever recorded. Very few bands, if any, played with the power that the Who did on this record. They were at the absolute peak of their prowess having already released, My Generation, A Quick One, The Who Sell Out and Tommy with Who's Next and Quadrophenia still to come. This is the Who captured in that perfect moment, when they were still doing Maximum R&B and psych tinged rock, but were transitioning into Arena Rock. For my money you had the greatest, craziest drummer in the world in Keith Moon, a top notch singer in Roger Daltrey, a genius songwriter/guitar player in Pete Townsend and John Entwhistle, the greatest rock bass player to ever live, all captured on a perfect couple of nights coming together in an apex explosion of a rock n roll wet dream. They do their mini-rock opera A Quick One, the version that Wes Anderson used in Rushmore, they do Summertime Blues, Substitute, Happy Jack, Tattoo, Can't Explain and My Generation. And if you have the deluxe edition they perform the entirety of Tommy. All of these versions are possibly better than their album counterparts. Though their live performances of them at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight are a close second and third. God I love the Who. If this cocaine filled syringe of an album isn't a precursor to Punk I don't know what is. #TheWho #PeteTownsend #RogerDaltrey #KeithMoon #JohnEntwhistle #LiveAtLeeds #HardRock #PsychedelicRock #ArenaRock #AlbumRock #LiveAlbum #ProtoPunk 7d

1001albumstohearbeforeyoudie 145. The Who - Tommy (1969, Track). At this point in the project, I should remind everyone that I didn't put this list together myself - and it is not '1001 Best Albums', it is '1001 Albums You Must Hear'. This is the first album on the list which I really did not enjoy. The entire way through 'Tommy', I was just counting down the minutes until it was over. I realise this isn't a popular opinion with music fans, but I have to give my honest opinion on the music I hear on this list. There are moments on 'Tommy' that I enjoyed, but I'm not writing about moments - I'm writing about complete albums, and I think as an album, 'Tommy' is weak. The music is uninspired and monotonous and the lyrics are incredibly on-the-nose and unimaginative. Sure, there's 'Pinball Wizard', but it comes immediately after 'Fiddle About' - a jaunty tune about incestuous rape. With that still ringing in my ears, I couldn't really enjoy a song about how good Tommy is at pinball. I think it's time music fans listen to 'Tommy' again and re-evaluate its 'classic' status. There are good moments, but it's a bad album. Standout track: 'Pinball Wizard' (featured). 7d
  •   1001albumstohearbeforeyoudie @aaronwicked there's definitely some great drumming on here, I can't argue with that! Unfortunately I just don't think it works as an album! 7d
  •   aaronwicked I actually agree with that a lot. My friends hated when I put this album on haha 7d
  •   timmo1782 It's much better live, some of the last few songs are weak though. 7d
  •   lucasmassarini 1921, Amazing Journey/Sparks, We're not gonna take it, they are all amazing tracks 7d
  •   jessicahatrick hahaha i loved Tommy, movie and soundtrack. See Me, Feel Me, was like my favourite song from there. 7d
  •   tred_lightly_365 I got to see the Broadway version in the 90's it was good! Yesterday I heard the version of pinball wizard by Elton john from the movie score 7d
  •   americogcia Completely agree with your opinion on Tommy. There are good tracks and moments, but as an album I prefer other Who albums. 7d
