german_barn__builder Other shot of the #1870s #germanbarn. I'll post pictures of the other two barns to show how the ladders generally moved from one generation of Barns to another. #pennsylvaniabarn #barns #barnstalkers 2w

german_barn__builder We are now working on the #1870s #germanbarn (The white one on the previous video). I consider 1870s as the high watermark for the #pennsylvaniabarn. (Not for Craftsmanship) but for structural soundness and size. This is one of our classic, double ty beam canted Queen post #barns #barnstalkers 2w

  •   westernreserveliving I was just up in the attic of a 1840's farmhouse similar to the one we just dismantled. It had the same style supports as this. 2w
  •   sydnilth Look at this @phopop 2w
  •   bengt_jo_bygden Ver 2w
  •   bengt_jo_bygden Very special in my eyes. 2w
  •   welsh.run @westernreserveliving that's very interesting! I have never seen that in a house. The angled post with the Y bracing we would call in PA barn terms a "Canted Queen Posts. I wonder if the house you were in has Germanic influence? 2w
  •   welsh.run @bengt_jo_bygden Thank You friend! 2w
  •   westernreserveliving I have never seen canted posts in a house either and it had a twin across the street that was taken down a few years ago. My research shows that the plank framing came from the pilgrims who arrived from the Netherlands and it didn't appear in NY and OH until the 1820's. 2w
  •   westernreserveliving I didn't have my phone/camera with me but I'm going back. The original door up to the attic was still there and had the German PA hex symbol carved into it. I will get photos @welsh.run 2w

german_barn__builder Found this on a mowe sted board (not sure how to spell). Of the stone #1830s #germanbarn. Maybe it's the initials of the builder?? Any other ideas?? #pennsylvaniabarn #barn #barnstalkers 2w
  •   sydnilth Brad this is a great find! You might try using a photo-editing app to enhance the writing and see if there's more. I've done this with several beams - and then searched the early census records and found a builder with those initials! Sometimes a later owner (or visiting boys) carved initials too. Which county is this? 2w
  •   german_barn__builder @sydnilth thanks for the good advice!! There's another barn about 2 miles away that so similar I just think it has to be the same builder. I just need to find the time to try to prove it. It would be wonderful to actually figure out his name. This is in Franklin County. 2w
  •   sydnilth Send me a direct message with a bigger shot of the writing (and maybe the other barn too) and I'll take a look in the county records for you! Love this kind of mystery! 2w
  •   sydnilth Update: I've looked at some early PA censuses and see a few Franklin County carpenters with names that match the initials but not in Montgomery Twp. If that's where these barns are - you might want to check out landowner Samuel Shimp who died in 1840 Mercersburg. Online records in your county archives - in all your spare time! 2w
  •   german_barn__builder @sydnilth thanks a lot for checking that out that's interesting! You got us pegged were in Montgomery Township. 2w

german_barn__builder Interior shot of the previous barn . Intersection of post, Wall plate, ty beam and principal rafter. It's unfortunate the picture does not show it and i'm not able to explain it. But this is very complicated joinery! And also very common in the early 1800s #germanbarn #pennsylvaniabarn 3w

german_barn__builder This is a, Stone, sweitzer, #germanbarn, with one extended granary. I think this barn was probably built in the 1820s or 30s. #welshrunbuilders #barnstalkers #barn #1830s #pennsylvaniabarn 3w
  •   lostamericana Holy cow. That barn is that old? 3w
  •   german_barn__builder @lostamericana yes we have many bars in Franklin County that were built in that timeframe. In The early 1800s, farming in southern Pennsylvania, was an extremely financially profitable Business. 3w
  •   sydnilth Did you take a look around for a stone with a date? It's fantastic to see this project! 3w
  •   german_barn__builder @sydnilth haven't been able to find a date yet. 3w
  •   sydnilth These barns are so interesting to me - really different than the barns we work on in California and the ones I research in Michigan. Plus you show a great "carpenter's view" of things! 3w
  •   german_barn__builder @sydnilth I appreciate your interest! I really should post more pictures. I would love to see pictures of California Barns. Thanks!! 3w

welsh.run Marriage Marks were a type of accounting system used by the timber framers that built this barn 200 years ago.The Marks associated proper or “meant to be joined” timbers to be put together.#pennsylvaniabarn #germanbarns #barnstalker #oldbarns #timberframing 3w

german_barn__builder The three #germanbarns in this video are great example of changes to the #pennsylvaniabarn . The Barn Peak that I'm sitting on is a #1830s, The red barn (also in the previous post) is a #1900s, The first barn in the video (The white barn) is a #1870s. All are less than a quarter mile apart and built in a generation or to apart. This is about 2 miles from my house. We are excited that we have recently been awarded projects on all three of these barns. Hope to post more pictures soon. #welshrunbuilders 3w
  •   eyeseekbeauty Wow, impressive video! So much beauty to be seen in the Pennsylvania countryside! Be careful up there on the roof! 3w
  •   german_barn__builder Thanks! @eyeseekbeauty even though I love the beautiful countryside here, it's easy to forget and take it for granted. 3w
  •   eyeseekbeauty So true! I grew up in Ohio, and when I moved here, I promised myself that I would never lose my appreciation for the Pennsylvania mountains that can be seen in the distance. I've been in PA for almost 30 years now, and I'm doing pretty well on continuing to notice and appreciate the countryside here! 3w
  •   german_barn__builder Pennsylvania is great!! @eyeseekbeauty 3w

german_barn__builder We're putting a new roof on this #Germanbarn. This #Pennsylvaniabarn it's about 100 years old, this is the original roof. I Hope are new roof will last that long! The foundation looks to be much older. #barnlovers #barnstalker #barn #Welshrunbuilders . This is a working barn, on a Dairy farm. 4w
