w.r.builders Like most of our barns built before 1790 this one is a log barn.I think at some point probably around the 1850s the original roof system was removed and a timber framed system was built on the old log square. The barn was also extended. #pennsylvaniabarn #pennsylvania #pahistory #postandbeam #timberframe #timberframing #barnstalker 5d

german_barn__builder Building a new wooden door. The operating louvered window that I previously posted posted, is on the left. #Germanbarn #Pennsylvaniabarn #Welshrunbuilders 6d
  •   mountainharvestorganics sliding barn doors rock! We need to rebuild a few sliding doors on our barn but need to replace the hardware first! If you lived next door to us we probably wouldn't have a tarp hanging up. 5d
  •   german_barn__builder @mountainharvestorganics having grew up on a small dairy farm and being a small business owner, I know the feeling. Sometimes bailer twine, tarps or duct tape have to do! 5d

w.r.builders Drove by this barn yesterday she was so pretty I had to stop and sneak picture . The most distinctive feature of a #pennsylvaniabarn is the #forbay the wood sided cantilevered section on the left. #barns #barnstalker #pennsylvania #pahistory #farms 2w
  •   petrejoseph Thanks for posting that. We repointed that a couple of years ago and replaced all the louvers. We are going to do the spring house and the Wagon shed for that same customer this year. 2w
  •   w.r.builders @petrejoseph really! that's awesome! Nice job! 2w

  •   willlisak What would that space be used for? We have one in my family's old german barn in Jefferson county. 3w
  •   german_barn__builder For wheat or other grains until winter time. when it was usually thrashed, on the barn floor. @willlisak 3w
  •   laissezfaire_design Like how they left them floating like that and are able to rearrange them if they needed. 3w

german_barn__builder Here's a inside shot of the #Pennsylvaniabarn we are repointing. This #Germanbarn has a wooden hay track The pulleys, trolley and ropes are all still here. This is an extremely well-built #barn. #barnlovers #barnstalker #Welshrunbuilders 3w
  •   emilsagroforest Wow! Those designs in the masonry are glass bricks? 3w
  •   german_barn__builder The designs are openings in the bricks. this allows air to flow through and keep hay and other commodities stored in the barn from drawing moisture and molding. Which would likely happen when the humidity changes. @emilsagroforest 3w
  •   emilsagroforest Awesome. 3w
  •   german_barn__builder Thanks for your interest!! 3w
  •   sekriebs Very cool. Love the old stuff! 3w
  •   bengt_jo_bygden Art picture! 3w
  •   mountainharvestorganics Is the flooring for the loft dove tailed into summer beams? Would love to see photographs of the flooring from below. The siding for our barn allows more ventilation probably because our climate is more humid. 3w
  •   german_barn__builder The loft is actually called a oberden (over den). Logs often times have 2 live edges left on, and rest on the Ty beam. Perpendicular boards are laid randomly to create a crewed deck. Neither logs nor boards are secure in anyway and can be moved if need be. I will post another picture and hopefully it will make more sense. @mountainharvestorganics 3w

  •   1stbedloe Kent, take a look at some of my posts from a few months ago. I showed my photos of building my post and beam camp in the woods, 3 miles from the nearest road or source of power. 2w
