redskinsanalyst Will Kirk Cousins take advantage of latest opportunity?

Who: Redskins (1-1) at Eagles (2-0). Where: Lincoln Financial Field

When: Sunday, 1 p.m.

TV: FOX

When Kirk Cousins makes his fifth career start Sunday at The Linc, it will mark a potential turning point in the third-year quarterback’s career.
With Robert Griffin III sidelined by a dislocated ankle, it’s expected that Cousins will be at the helm for several weeks. What he does with this opportunity could answer a question that’s been asked around the league for more than a year: is he starting quarterback material? “It’s important that you’re well prepared each time you go out there and you know what you’re going to do and you don’t lay an egg,” said Cousins, who is 1-3 as a starter. “Each opportunity is very, very big.” The latest extended look at Cousins will begin amid difficult circumstances: on the road and against the reigning division champs. “With Roberts injury, it’s [Cousins’] job and we’ll cater to what he does,” Coach Jay Gruden said this week. “I think he’ll be ready. Time will tell. We’ll see how he does in some key third down situations when the game’s tight, or if we’re trailing. There are a lot of circumstances in a football game that can really determine how a quarterback will be with the pressure. We’ll see. But obviously, we have high hopes for Kirk, and I know the team does.” Last week, Cousins came off the bench in the first quarter and efficiently directed the Redskins to their first victory of the season. The 26-year-old completed 22 of 33 pass attempts for 250 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also posted a quarterback rating of 109.4.

Impressive numbers, indeed. But they came against a porous Jaguars’ defense that had spent the previous week prepping to face Griffin. In Philly, Cousins will face a more talented Eagles’ unit that’s known all week that he’d be the starter.

  •   your_majesty_247 I believe he doesn't have a choice. With RG3 inconsistentes to stay healthy and accurate. I truly think this maybe our last hope. Im mean I will always believe we have a better chance wit RG. But it's a business and were chasing a ring. We looked good very good last week compared to wknd 1 and we have alot of tools to get us to the championship. #HTTR #forobviousreasons 13h
  •   kawikaborja Cousins I believe has two wins and three loses. He started and beat the the Browns in 2012 after RGIII got hurt against the Ravens. 13h
  •   redskinsanalyst @kawikaborja That was his only win as a starter. 1-3 rotoworld.com my friend or just wilkipedia him. 13h

redskinsanalyst NFL adds a sack to Hatcher's total

Jason Hatcher had a sack taken away from him after the stats guys at the NFL reviewed the film of the Texans game and determined that he had not really sacked Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter.

But the stat guys giveth and they taketh away. The former happened when they took a closer look at the Jacksonville game.

The postgame defensive stats showed Hatcher with 1.5 sacks. But after further review by the Elias Sports Bureau it was decided that Hatcher deserved more credit on two plays. A first-quarter back that originally was credited to Brian Orakpo was split between him and Hatcher. Here is the explanation from Elias: 12:37, 1st Quarter: We are splitting the sack between Orakpo and Hatcher (Orakpo originally got credit for the full sack). Hatcher had a hold of QB first by the jersey, but Orakpo came in and helped finish him off. Without Orakpo’s efforts, we feel QB still may have had a chance to make a play.

A second-quarter sack that originally was split between Hatcher and Perry Riley was changed to a full sack for Hatcher.

That’s two additional half sacks for him and since two halves make a whole, one sack was added to Hatcher’s ledger. That gives him 2.5 for the game and since he had zero coming in, that’s his total for the season. That’s good enough to be tied for fifth in the NFL in sacks at this early juncture.

Yes, it’s early but it’s safe to say that Hatcher has added a dimension that was missing from the Redskins defensive line last year. In 2013, Redskins D-linemen combined for just 3.5 sacks.

Ryan Kerrigan is the NFL leader in sacks with 4.0. The Redskins lead the league with 10.

redskinsanalyst Redskins get bad news on Jordan Reed's status for Sunday

Redskins tight end Jordan Reed will miss his second consecutive game on Sunday because of a hamstring pull, Coach Jay Gruden said on Friday. “I was hoping for a miracle [but] Jordan Reed is out,” Gruden said of the second-year tight end, who was hurt in the first quarter Week 1.

Since being drafted in the third round in 2013, Reed has had a half dozen different injuries and missed nine games.

With Reed sidelined, the Redskins will again turn to tight ends Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen. Paul has hauled in 12 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in two games.

redskinsanalyst With Forbath questionable, Redskins will have kicker insurance

Among the players who were listed as questionable on the Redskins injury report was kicker Kai Forbath. He has been battling a right groin injury for over a week. It didn’t keep him out of last Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. The third-year kicker was two for two on field goals in that game, banging them through from 36 and 42 yards. Punter Tress Way handled the kickoff duties.

Forbath has been limited in practice all week. Redskins coach Jay Gruden seemed to be pretty confident that Forbath will play but he said that contingencies plans are in place.

There is a possibility that Way will again kick off. “Yes. That could be the case again this week, see how Kai's doing, but he kicked today and felt pretty good,” said Gruden. That will save some wear and tear on Forbath’s leg and lessen the chance that the will aggravate it.

Last weekend it was reported that Zach Hocker, the seventh-round draft pick who lost the competition for the kicking job to Forbath, was at Redskins Park in case he was needed. Washington will have a similar Plan B in place this weekend if needed. “So, cross our fingers, we think he'll be OK, but we have insurance somewhere around,” said Gruden. “We'll be OK. We'll have a kicker for sure."

Normal Redskins LIVE 24/7
redskinsanalyst DeSean Jackson is listed as questionable for Sunday

DeSean Jackson will be listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Eagles, Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said.

Jackson continues to make a progress from a shoulder injury he suffered in last week’s win over Jacksonville. But the star wide receiver was “very limited” in practice Friday after sitting out altogether on Wednesday and Thursday. “He did good today, but we’ll see,” Gruden said. “He was very limited, as you well know. But I think it was a step in a positive direction. We’ll get another look at him tomorrow with the trainers, then we’ll gauge him on Sunday morning and see where he’s at.” Tight end Jordan Reed (hamstring) has been ruled out against the Eagles, Gruden said. Defensive end Kedric Golston, meantime, will be listed as doubtful. Both players were sidelined against the Jaguars.

Joining Jackson as questionable to suit up in Philly will be kicker Kai Forbath and center Kory Lichtensteiger. Both are battling groin strains.

Out will be quarterback Robert Griffin III (ankle), linebacker Akeem Jordan (knee) and cornerback Tracy Porter (hamstring). Jordan and Porter have yet to play this season.

redskinsanalyst Redskins' Gruden "will not hesitate one bit" to turn to Ryan Grant if needed

When DeSean Jackson went out of Sunday’s game against the Jaguars in the early going on Sunday on Sunday it was rookie wide receiver Ryan Grant who got an increased workload. After playing just five snaps in the season opener the Redskins’ fifth-round draft pick played 37 against the Jaguars. He was very effective, making five catches for 37 yards.

Jackson may or may not be able to play on Sunday against the Eagles and even if he does play his effectiveness may be limited. But Redskins coach Jay Gruden isn’t losing any sleep over the situation since he trusts Grant to fill in if needed. “I don’t know why, I just have been a big Ryan Grant fan since the first day he walked in here,” said Gruden. “He is very poised, he has been very detailed in his routes and he has got big strong hands and does not give any indicators whatsoever where he is going and runs every route.” Gruden has come up with his own nickname for Grant. “I called him ‘Clinic’ today,” said Gruden. “He runs every route like a clinic tape. So [he is] very good, but he is still young, still learning and may make a rookie mistake here or there but he hasn’t made many since he has walked through our door.” “Clinic” is not up there with “Megatron” as a fierce-sounding nickname for a wide receiver. But with his head coach is dishing some pretty lavish praise on him it seems doubtful that Grant will complain. “So he has been very impressive to me, so that’s what I am talking about if DeSean [Jackson] is struggling a little bit with his shoulder, I do not hesitate one bit,” said Gruden. “Ryan Grant will play and Andre [Roberts] will play out there and of course we have Aldrick [Robinson] so we are pretty well covered at that spot.”

sports_wriiiter "Jameis Winston needs to be more mature like Peyton Manning was at his age". I don't excuse anything Winston has done up to this point but I wish people would stop piling on. Smelly Kiper Jr and the rest of the "experts" at ESPN said that he shouldn't be drafted at the top of the 1st round anymore... I'm willing to bet that he will still be a top 5 pick next year. #fsu #noles #winston #jameis #fhritp #NFL #nfldraft #peytonmanning 2d

redskinsanalyst Jackson, Reed did not practice Thursday

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson and tight end Jordan Reed were among a growing list of players on the Redskins’ injury report.

Jackson (sprained shoulder) and Reed (hamstring) did not practice for a second consecutive day. Defensive end Kedric Golston (groin), cornerback Tracy Porter (hamstring) and Akeem Jordan (knee) did not practice, either. “We just have to wait and see,” Gruden said, referring specifically to Jackson and Reed. “Injuries, I try not to get too excited or too down or anything. I just let the injuries play out, let the player honestly let me know how he’s doing and then the trainer and just go from there. [As] for predicting injuries, I try not to do that. So, we’ve just got wait and see. Tomorrow will be a better gauge of where they are.” Although Jackson did not participate in any team drills, he did take part in some individual work, including catching a few passes. “We’re going to challenge him, push him a little bit more on [Friday],” Gruden said. “And we’ll see where he’s at. But he’s still a little sore. I think he’s getting better and the range of motion is better. It's an injury where I think a couple of more days will do him a lot of good. …A lot of it is just pain tolerance.” There were two changes on the report: fullback Darrel Young (neck) was full participation after being limited on Wednesday and center Kory Lichtensteiger (groin) was limited after not appearing on the report the previous day.

Kicker Kai Forbath, meantime, was limited for a second straight day with a right groin muscle strain.

redskinsanalyst Haslett on Rambo: 'We gave him every opportunity'

The Jaguars’ touchdown in Sunday’s game proved to be the “dagger” that ended Bacarri Rambo’s two-year tenure in Washington, defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said Thursday. “It’s a shame because we gave him every opportunity,” Haslett said. “I feel bad because we drafted him.” Rambo was waived Tuesday and went unclaimed, making him a free agent. “We thought he'd pan into a good player, kind of like with Keenan and Perry and some of these guys we drafted here that turned into good football players,” Haslett said. “It didn’t work out." In the Redskins’ opener in Houston, Rambo, a sixth round draft pick in 2013, failed to tackle DeAndre Hopkins on a 76-yard touchdown reception. Against the Jaguars, Rambo took a poor angle on Marcedes Lewis’s 63-yard score. They are the only touchdowns the Redskins’ defense has surrendered. “I think the big play last week was the dagger,” Haslett said. “We tried as a coaching staff to give him every opportunity to be successful. Hopefully he’ll go somewhere else, calm down, relax. I think he was so nervous to make a play that he couldn’t make a play. Hopefully he’ll get another opportunity.” For more news follow me @redskinsanalyst

redskinsanalyst OPEN THREAD: Can the Redskins trust Brandon Meriweather?

Brandon Meriweather has undeniable talent. At times he can be a playmaking safety and a strong run supporter from the back of the Redskins defense. At other times, he is a liability on the field because he continues to lead tackles with the crown of his helmet, resulting in penalties, and more recently, suspensions. After his latest two-game suspension, Meriweather vows to change how he hits opponents. But at this point, can Jay Gruden, Jim Haslett and company trust Meriweather? "Ryan Clark has done a great job of holding the fort down. Now you throw another guy out there who knows the defense inside and out and can communicate with the linebackers and the defensive line and they really play well together. You can see that all through training camp," Gruden said of Meriweather coming back to join Ryan Clark in the Redskins secondary.
Clark and Meriweather lined up at the safety spots was the vision for this Redskins defense, before a big hit in the third preseason game got Meriweather suspended. Again. That marks his second suspension in as many years, and it's obvious to everyone that NFL refs are watching the former University of Miami safety every time he makes contact with a ball carrier.

At this point, can the Redskins trust Meriweather to not get another suspension? Can he really change the way he plays the game? He is a hard-hitting safety, which the 'Skins want, but those hits must get closer to the chest and body of ball carriers or Meriweather will continue to be a liability for Haslett and the Washington D.

It's simple: Can the 'Skins trust Meriweather? Let us know what you think in the comments.
