redskinsreporter Gruden refutes report regarding starting QB decision

BALTIMORE—Despite a report to the contrary, Jay Gruden said tonight that no decision has been made as to who the starting quarterback will be when the Redskins take on the Dolphins to open the NFL season on September 13.
But at the same time, he would not commit to starting Robert Griffin III even if the fourth-year quarterback has been cleared to return after being diagnosed with a concussion following the team’s game against the Lions on August 20.
When asked who would start against the Dolphins, Gruden said that he did not have enough information to make the decision yet. “We have to re-evaluate the [game] tape. We have to find out how Robert is, he's going to go through the protocols at the end of the week, Thursday or Friday, and see how he's doing then,” said Gruden. “And make our decision then.” Gruden was then specifically asked if there was a chance that a healthy Griffin would be on the bench against the Dolphins. “We have to check on Robert first, go from there,” he said.
When asked about the reversal in the independent neurologist’s decision to let Griffin play tonight, Gruden insisted that it wasn’t the fault of the Redskins organization. “We had a verbal from the independent doctor that he was cleared,” said Gruden. “This had nothing to do with the Washington Redskins, believe me. We continued to prepare, went through the walkthrough at [Joint Andrews Base] and then our doctor got a call, got the email and read the report and it was different. So we obviously had to sit him down. It had nothing to do with our doctors, nothing to do with our trainers, it was league-mandated independent doctors. “We did everything by the book.” Asked if he had a quarterback controversy, he said that it has yet to be decided. “As far as who’s starting, at every position we’re going to evaluate that as a staff and talk about it,” he said. “I’m not going to make any announcements now, that’s for sure.”

redskinsreporter Gruden on exchange with Harbaugh: I was a little perturbed with that

Fights are becoming all too routine during NFL preseason, and Saturday night's Ravens/Redskins game did not disappoint. Midway through the first quarter numerous players got into it, resulting in a number of personal foul penalties and the ejection of Washington's Chris Culliver and Baltimore's Steve Smith Sr.

What made this preseason fracas different, however, was the action between the coaches.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh ran all the way across the field where he and 'Skins head coach Jay Gruden exchanged some words. Loudly. "I didn't say anything," Harbaugh said following the game. "Something was said to me, but that doesn't bother me." Gruden saw things a bit differently, considering he stayed near his sideline as the opposing coach ran some 50 some yards across the field. "I was two feet on the field and he was all the way on our sideline and the referee told me to get back," Gruden said. "I was a little perturbed at that." The coach said that with two good and fiery players like Smith and Culliver, sometimes emotion heats up. "We just wanted the situation to calm itself down. Of course, it didn't," Gruden said. "We tried." So what did Harbaugh say to Gruden? The coach was diplomatic. "As far as what he said to me, that was just the heat of the deal." Harbaugh explained that he ran onto the field to try and calm things down. "We get the memos and everything about the fighting, so I figured let me go out there and kind of just get our guys back out of the way," the Ravens coach said.

No surprise that neither Gruden or Harbaugh rehashed what was actually said, but it's clear there was more to the situation than either coach let on in postgame interviews.

redskinsreporter Instant Analysis: Cousins solid in Redskins win over Ravens

BALTIMORE—The Redskins saw what they wanted to out of Kirk Cousins as he got the start at quarterback in place of a concussed Robert Griffin III. He was sharp after a slow start and led the Redskins to two touchdowns in the second quarter during the Redskins’ 31-13 preseason win over the Ravens.

Key Moments: The Redskins were trailing 13-0 in the second quarter. From the Baltimore 22, Cousins took the snap and he immediately had Terrell Suggs, who was unblocked, in his face. He fired over the middle to Andre Roberts, who was surrounded by two defenders. The ball was tipped up into the air and rookie wide receiver Jamison Crowder grabbed it and easily rolled the last 10 yards into the end zone. The point after touchdown made it 13-7.

After the Redskins scored again with just seconds left in the half, the Ravens got a 103-yard kickoff return by Asa Jackson that set Baltimore up with a first and goal at the two. But on fourth down from the one, Chris Baker poked the ball out of Javorius Allen’s arm and it rolled into the end zone. Although the Ravens recovered, by rule the ball was returned to the spot of the fumble and awarded to the Redskins. That kept the score 14-13 at halftime.
Player of the Game

I think you have to go with Rashad Ross on offense, with his X receptions for XX yards and the two touchdowns. Honorable mention belongs to Matt Jones, who had a few strong runs while gaining 57 yards on seven carries.
On defense we’ll split it between two outside linebackers. Jackson Jeffcoat had an interception that set up a touchdown and a sack and strip of Ravens QB Matt Schaub. Preston Smith had a sack and a quarterback hit among his six tackles.
Injury Update: WR Evan Spencer was evaluated for a concussion in the third quarter and did not return to the game. FB Jordan Campbell left the game with a shoulder injury

From the Locker Room: Check back later for quotes from the Redskins’ locker room.
