redskinsanalyst Manziel fined for middle finger flip

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A person familiar with the penalty says Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel has been fined $12,000 by the NFL for flipping his middle finger at Washington's sideline.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Friday because the ruling has not been made public.

Manziel said he was reacting to taunting by the Redskins during Monday night's nationally televised game. The action didn't help his chances to win Cleveland's starting job, which went to veteran Brian Hoyer. Manziel says he has to be "smarter" on the field.

Browns coach Mike Pettine was "extremely disappointed" by Manziel's conduct and said the 21-year-old's on-field behavior factored into the team's decision in naming a starter.

redskinsanalyst Lack of practice time could sideline Thompson even if healthy

Many Redskins fans would like to see Chris Thompson get on the field for Saturday’s preseason game against the Ravens. The speedy but often injured back has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in the New England preseason game on August 7. He practiced some on Wednesday and Thursday this week but he was limited. "He did individual again today, very similar as yesterday,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said on Thursday. “He looked quick, still a little tentative but we'll see.” Thompson said that he had a “pretty good day, felt good” and he agreed with Gruden that playing would be a game-time decision.

But the condition of the ankle is not the only obstacle to his participation on Saturday. He has not participated in the team portion of practice since before that Patriots preseason game. “I think that may be a little bit of an issue because I haven’t really practiced in two weeks now,” said Thompson. “That will probably be a little tough for me.” Thompson’s injury history certainly creates both cause for concern and doubt that the team can use a roster spot on him. He missed much of his junior year at Florida State with a back injury and then his senior year ended early with a torn ACL. The Redskins still saw enough potential there to draft him in the third round.

He made the 53-man roster as the kickoff and punt returner but he played in only four games. A shoulder injury put him on injured reserve.

redskinsanalyst Redskins NT Barry Cofield returns to practice

Nose tackle Barry Cofield returned to practice Thursday after sitting out the previous day’s session with a sore groin muscle, Coach Jay Gruden said. “Cofield’s fine,” Gruden said. “He did all the team drills today. He’ll be okay. He’ll be [active] and ready for Baltimore.” Meantime, cornerback Tracy Porter is “probably going to be out” with a hamstring strain while running back Chris Thompson (ankle) is “50-50” for Saturday, according to Gruden. Thompson was injured in the preseason opener against the Patriots. “It’s a game-time decision,” Thompson said. “Basically, it’s a call by the coaches and I’ve just got to see how my body feels. Had a pretty good day today. Felt good so I’ve got to wait these two days out and see how I feel.” Running back Lache Seastrunk missed practice as he tended to a family matter. He tweeted earlier this week that his grandmother had passed away.

Linebacker Darryl Sharpton also did not practice. He’s been battling a high ankle sprain for weeks.
