redskinsanalyst Mike Shanahan on RG3: He can still be a franchise QB "He has that type of ability. Hes' in charge of that himself," Shanahan said of RG3 on ESPN's NFL Countdown show Sunday morning. "It takes a lot of work, a lot of studying." Shanahan's comments come one day after Griffin led the Redskins to an upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles. RG3 did not have a great game against Philly, but he limited mistakes and looked comfortable releasing the ball with good tempo to avoid a barrage of sacks. Earlier this season, rumors of a lack of focus and study from RG3 emerged, a notion that Shanahan seemed to confirm. "I think he can be as good as he wants to be, but he's got to make a commitment in that film room like he's never done before," Shanahan said.

When he arrived in Washington, many expected the two-time Super Bowl winner Shanahan to deliver the Redskins back to a winning football team. Despite one NFC East title in 2012, the Shanahan era with the Redskins was largely disappointing. The marriage with RG3 ended spectacularly bad, with the coach shutting down the young QB. Now, Shanahan admits Griffin is learning a new offensive system, and that "won't happen overnight." Asked to describe working for the Redskins, a situation often lampooned in the national and local media, Shanahan took the high road. He explained that a team with a history of success should expect continued success. The Redskins success, however, mostly came more than two decades ago, with little signs of a return at any point this century.

The appearance on ESPN came as rumors swirl about Shanahan's desire to take over the coaching job of the Chicago Bears next season. Asked about that specifically, Shanahan gave a non-answer about "wanting to win," words that rang hollow but with a clear intent to announce his candidacy for the position should current coach Marc Trestman get fired.

redskinsanalyst A fairly calm offseason appears to be on tap at Redskins Park

It looks like we’re headed for a fairly calm offseason for the Redskins.

All indications are that both Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden will be back in 2015. Under normal circumstances there would not have been a question about either of them returning. Gruden just finished the first season of a five-year guaranteed contract with the Redskins still owing him some $16 million. Griffin has a year and a fully guaranteed $3.4 million left on his deal. It wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense for either of them to be gone.

But in the Redskins organization the sensible isn’t always the norm so the questions needed to be asked. And with the caveat that things can always change, coach and quarterback will give it another go in 2015 to see if they can win a game together before a few days prior to Christmas.

Right now it looks like Griffin will have to earn the job as the starting quarterback. That means that the team will have to identify a challenger. Do they go with Kirk Cousins, who is under contract for 2015, or Colt McCoy, who is not? Do they bring in a draft pick or a free agent?

The trick will be finding a quarterback who can make it a genuine challenge and legitimately push Griffin to perform better without either spending a high draft pick or committing a lot of money so that they don’t have a high-cost sunk investment if Griffin wins the competition.

redskinsanalyst DeSean Jackson criticizes 'naïve' Eagles defense

DeSean Jackson had another big game against his former teammates.

Then, after the Redskins’ surprise 27-24 win over the Eagles, Washington's star wide receiver was critical of Philadelphia's defensive strategy. “I’ve been there the past couple of years and that’s how they play,” Jackson said, asked about the Eagles decision to use single coverage on him. “They’re very naïve and they play how they play, so they can care less who’s out there or who’s at wide receiver.” Jackson, who entered the game averaging a league-best 19.1 yards per catch, finished the game with four receptions for 126 yards, including catches of 55 and 51 yards. When the teams met in September, Jackson had five catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. “They’re going to play their defense the way they play it,” Jackson continued. “I’m just glad I was able to get the opportunities I got on them. ... They play how they play. They don’t care. That’s the Philadelphia Eagles defense. I’ve been there a lot of years and witnessed a lot of players, wide receivers, tight ends, get off some huge games on them. I’m just happy to be on that side and send them home with a loss.” Jackson played for the Eagles from 2008 until he was unceremoniously dumped in March. Obviously, his feelings are still a bit raw. “That’s a question you have to ask them,” Jackson said, asked if he thought the Eagles regretted letting him go. “As far as my ex-teammates, I think a lot the guys miss me. They tell me that during the game. They constantly tell me how much they miss me and they wish I was still there. But that’s a decision they chose to make in the front office."

redskinsanalyst Jay Gruden 'impressed' with RG3's performance

A week after reinstalling Robert Griffin III as the Redskins' starting quarterback, Coach Jay Gruden said he was “impressed” by the quarterback’s “excellent” performance in Saturday’s 27-24 victory over the Eagles. “I think Robert did a great job,” Gruden said. “I think No. 1, getting the ball out of his hands and No. 2, making good decisions. He only got sacked twice.” “Overall,” Gruden added, “I thought he did an outstanding job of managing the football game, not only in the passing game but he did a lot at the line of scrimmage in the running game, which is very, very important. He did an excellent job.” Griffin was benched by Gruden following an ineffective performance in the Redskins' 17-13 loss at San Francisco on Nov. 23. But when Colt McCoy suffered a neck injury against the Giants last week, Griffin got a second chance sooner than anyone anticipated.

In his first start in a month, Griffin completed 16 of 23 passes for 220 yards, no touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 81.8. Not outstanding by any measure. But it was enough for the Redskins, who had not won a game since Week 8 in Dallas.

Asked if Griffin did enough to earn the start next week against the Cowboys, Gruden said he had. “We won today, so heck yeah,” Gruden said. “He did a great job.” Gruden also indicated that he's eager to see more. After all, it was just one successful start. “Let’s finish this season out on a high note against Dallas when they come here,” he said. “Then after the season we will make the necessary adjustments. It’s a great opportunity for Robert to reestablish himself as the leader of this football team. [I’m] hoping he does it.”

redskinsanalyst Rookie LB Trent Murphy injures hand in Eagles game

Redskins outside linebacker Trent Murphy suffered a broken right in the first quarter of Saturday’s 27-24 victory over the Eagles and did not return.
Coach Jay Gruden said Murphy broke the third metacarpal bone. Murphy told Zac Boyer of The Washington Times that he’ll undergo more tests Sunday and indicated that it’s possible, if not likely, he’ll be sidelined for next week’s game against Dallas.
Murphy stepped into the starting lineup in Week 8 after Brian Orakpo was lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. If Murphy does not play against Dallas, he’ll finish his rookie season with 32 combined tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Murphy was replaced by rookie Jackson Jeffcoat, who notched a sack and two quarterback hits in his first extended playing time of the season.
Several other Redskins suffered minor injuries but returned and finished the game. Among them: left tackle Trent Williams (shoulder), defensive end Kedric Golston (AC sprain), center Kory Lichtensteiger (stinger), safety Ryan Clark (ankle).

Normal Redskins LIVE 24/7
redskinsanalyst RG3 after victory: 'This win’s about this team'

Griffin wasn’t spectacular, completing 16 of 23 passes for 220 yards with one interception. His passer rating of 81.8 was not nearly as good as it was last week when he posted a rating of 106.4 against the Giants. But the Redskins lost that game and they won this one. That makes all the difference in the world.

For the first time all year, Griffin consistently looked comfortable working out of the pocket. His line gave him time to throw and he took advantage. Twice he found ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson deep. In the first quarter Jackson got loose for 51 yards and the Redskins scored on a 28-yard Alfred Morris run on the next play. Then in the third period it was Griffin to Jackson for 55, setting up another TD. “I think Robert did a great job. I think No. 1, getting the ball out of his hands, and [No. 2] making good decisions,” said Redskins coach Jay Gruden. “He only got sacked twice . . . I though he did an outstanding job of managing the football game.” Getting sacked has been an issue for the Redskins’ offense in general and for Griffin in particular. The Eagles came into the game second in the league in sacks and the Redskins had allowed the second most in the NFL. But they got just the two.

Griffin was happy to spread the credit around after it was over. “This win’s about this team,” said Griffin. “And we’ve really been through the wringer a little bit this year with a lot of adversity, a lot of mess and guys have responded.” There seemingly has been a different controversy surround the team every week as they have stumbled to what was a 3-11 record coming into the game. A win over their division rival Eagles, especially one that did severe damage to their playoff hopes in front of a FedEx Field crowd that was loaded with Philly fans, quiets all of that, at least for the time being.

bleedinggreensammy The first thing we need to do in the 2015 NFL Draft is draft a mobile QB who can add that extra element into Chip Kelly's offense that really will make this offense even harder to defend! I know we have huge needs on defense at the cornerback and safety positions, but championship teams are built around a franchise QB, which is what Chip needs to hand pick himself that he believes can lead this team! The threat of a QB running is what this offense really lacks! Although Marcus Mariotta and Dak Prescott will almost undoubtedly be off the board when the Eagles get on the clock, (Although I strongly believe the Eagles should trade up to get a higher pick) the time is now for Chip Kelly to hand pick a QB that he wants to run his offense in Year 3! Chip, we want a mobile QB, and this draft is the time to pick him! #FlyEaglesFly #PhiladelphiaEagles #NFL #NFLDraft #Draft #NFLDraft2015 #Quarterback #DraftPick #MarcusMariotta #DakPrescott #BrettHundley #TimeIsNow #QBoftheFuture #Year3 #ChipKelly #InChipWeTrust #BrightFuture 13h
  •   original.shvt If we don't trade i still have faith in foles he needs to lay off throwing off his back foot and not throw stuff up we need corners assley fletcher sucks! 13h
  •   bleedinggreensammy Foles is simply not mobile and that is the dimension that this offense lacks! It would be a lot harder for great defenses like Seattle and San Francisco if we had a mobile QB because not only would they have to worry about LeSean McCoy and bottling up Matthews and Maclin, but they'd also have to factor in the running QB! And look at the numbers Foles put up in Kelly's system last year! If a non-mobile 3rd round QB could post the 3rd highest single season passer rating in NFL history in Chip Kelly's offense, imagine how good it would be if a mobile QB like Mariota or Brett Hundley were running it! But the factor that most importantly makes QB a crucial need is the turnovers! None of us are surprised at Sanchez turning the ball over, but Foles did just as much! You don't win Super Bowls without the right QB, and so that is why geting Chip the right QB now is the most important position in the draft! @original.shvt 13h
  •   original.shvt I honestly would love to get mariotta or Prescott I just feel the odds of us getting them are slim so let's work with what we got if we can't get better and get corners. Corners and qbs is our main focus to me 13h
  •   bleedinggreensammy Who said it had to be Mariota or Prescott? Brett Hundley would be a nice fit too! But don't forget we can trade up (which I strongly believe we should do) to have a better shot at one of them! However, I do agree cornerback is the next position on the list! 12h
  •   supplys3lived You should be a photographer 12h
  •   jacobjones08 Thank you @bleedinggreensammy I agree chip knows Marcus so it would be a good fit Sanchez will go to three Marcus 2 and 1 and nick 1st and 2nd string I think we can do it if they tried 10h

redskinsanalyst Redskins pull together for win, cloud playoff picture

LANDOVER, Md. -- Kicker Kai Forbath connected from 26 yards out with five seconds remaining to lift the Redskins to a stunning 27-24 victory over the Eagles on Saturday.

Key moment: The missed field goals by Parkey, who misfired from 34 and 46 in the third quarter. Parkey entered the game 29 of 31 (93.5-percent). Earlier this month, Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein missed two of three attempts in a 24-0 St. Louis victory at FedEx Field.

Player of the game: With all apologies to Zach Ertz and his 15 receptions, the game ball goes to Jackson, who burned his former mates for a second time this season. Jackson finished with four receptions for 126 yards, including a 55 yarder and a 51 yarder.

Injury update: Rookie outside linebacker Trent Murphy suffered a hand injury in the first quarter and did not return. Murphy’s replacement, Jackson Jeffcoat, recorded his first NFL sack a few plays after entering the game. Jeffcoat is the son of former Cowboys defensive end Jim Jeffcoat.

Sitting this one out: The Redskins’ inactives were linebacker Keenan Robinson, defensive end Jason Hatcher, running back Roy Helu Jr., cornerback Kenny Okoro, linebacker Gabe Miller, guard Josh LeRibeus, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson. Robinson, who has missed three games with a sprained MCL in his left knee, did some running and light drills on the field prior to the game. Hatcher, meantime, missed his second consecutive game with a nagging knee injury.

Up next: The Redskins close out the season next Sunday against the NFC East-leading Cowboys in a game that could have playoff implications for Dallas.

redskinsanalyst Another year, another milestone for Alfred Morris

Redskins running back Alfred Morris passed the 1,000-yard mark in rushing for the season in the third quarter of Washington’s game against the Eagles and he made some history in doing so.
Morris became the first Redskins back to gain 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons with the team. And he became the second to gain 1,000 in three straight seasons at any point in his tenure with the team. Stephen Davis was the first when he did it from 1999-2001.
The Redskins have had some pretty famous running backs, including Clinton Portis, Hall of Famer John Riggins and one-time NFL MVP Larry Brown. That makes Morris feat even more impressive.

redskinsanalyst DeSean Jackson joins elite company in Redskins history

Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson caught a 51-yard bomb from Robert Griffin III in the first quarter against the Eagles and in doing so he joined some elite company.

Jackson, who is in his first year with the Redskins after coming over as a free agent in April, went over 1,000 yards receiving for the season with that catch. He becomes the fifth Redskins receiver to pass the 1,000-yard mark in his first season with the team.

The others were Bobby Mitchell, Henry Ellard, Laveranues Coles, and Santana Moss.

redskinsanalyst Redskins draft prospect watch: Raycom Media Camellia Bowl

With the Redskins’ season winding down, I will be keeping an eye on the upcoming college bowl games and the NFL prospects that could be on Washington’s radar in 2015 draft.

What: Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.

Who: South Alabama vs. Bowling Green.

When: Saturday, 9:15 p.m.

Location: Cramton Bowl, Montgomery, Ala.

Player to watch: South Alabama quarterback Brandon Bridge, at 6 foot 5, 235 pounds, has prototypical size for an NFL passer.

As a senior, Bridge has completed 140 of his 270 pass attempts (51.9 percent) for 1,648 yards to go along with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. Indeed, his numbers aren’t great. And the Canadian is considered by many talent evaluators to be raw. But he’s got size, a strong arm and is mobile, as well.
The Redskins’ quarterback situation, of course, is as shaky as it’s ever been, with Robert Griffin III and backup Kirk Cousins both having been shown the bench this season. Bridge isn’t an immediate solution for any NFL team; he’s viewed as developmental prospect that could go in the mid-to-late rounds.

Bridge has also been invited to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

redskinsanalyst Williams active, Keenan Robinson out

Robert Griffin III is probably pretty keyed up for his first start in four weeks but he's probably a little less nervous than he might have been if Trent Williams was not playing.
Williams, the Redskins' Pro Bowl left tackle who was listed as questionable with shoulder injury, is active and will start today against the Eagles.
However, Mike linebacker Keenan Robinson, a key defender, will be out today. He is going to miss his third straight game with a knee injury.
Linebacker Gabe Miller and defensive end Jason Hatcher were declared out on the team's final injury report.
Also inactive for the Redskins:

G Josh LeRibeus
WR Leonard Hankerson
RB Roy Helu Jr.
DB Kenny Okoro

redskinsanalyst Redskins draft prospect watch: New Orleans Bowl/Analysis.

Players observed: There aren’t any sure-fire instant NFL starters on either team in this one. Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo replaced Colin Kaepernick behind center for the Wolf Pack and he’s quite mobile with 997 yards rushing this year and 6.1 yards per carry. He’d have to develop as a pocket passer but if you take him late on the third day of the draft Fajardo could do that without much pressure.

Daniel Quave has started 50 straight games at guard for the Ragin’ Cajuns. At 6-2, 316 he could be a good fit in a power-running scheme if Jay Gruden is going to make the switch. Quave looks like a late-round prospect who could benefit from an invitation to the Senior Bowl (he hasn’t received one).

Normal Redskins LIVE 24/7
redskinsanalyst Redskins draft prospect watch: New Mexico Bowl

With the Redskins’ season winding down, I will be keeping an eye on the upcoming college bowl games and the NFL prospects that could be on Washington’s radar in 2015 draft.

What: Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

Who: Utah State vs. UTEP.

When: Saturday, 2:20 p.m.

Location: University Stadium, Albuquerque, N.M.

Players to watch: The Redskins need help everywhere. And, thus, should be evaluating players at every position. There are few potential prospects in this game, a group led by Utah State linebaker Zach Vigil.

A 6 foot 2, 240-pound linebacker, Vigil, the Mountain West defensive player of the year, ranks ninth in the nation in tackles per game (11.2) and 12th in tackles for loss (1.5). On the season, he has 145 tackles, 19.5 for loss, 9 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown. His brother, Nick Vigil, is a sophomore standout at linebacker for the Aggies.

Although the Redskins have two young starters at inside linebacker in Keenan Robinson and Perry Riley, their depth drops off after backup Will Compton.

The Vigils will have their hands full with UTEP running back Aaron Jones, a 5 foot 10, 185-pound sophomore. He’s 23rd nationally in rushing yards per game, averaging 112.1 per game, and has 14 touchdowns (11 rushing). UTEP tight end Eric Tomlinson (6-7, 270) and quarterback Jameill Showers have accepted invitations to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

Now im not a big fan of cleans, I believe there is a time and a place for it, and that its not for everyone. But I must always practice it in order to teach it, and will always as for opinions from those with higher knowledge. Practice makes perfect, still need to work on my technique, the bar should explode as straight up as possible with as little as possible movement towards the front or back.
