osceorg “The #water level rose to about one meter and I didn’t have anywhere to sleep. I had to sleep on the table and I was completely cut off from the rest of the world for four days”, said a female respondent from Svilajnac. Although #naturaldisasters affect all segments of the society they can have different impact on men and women. Have a look into our #report on #Gender Analysis of the Impact of the 2014 #Floods in #Serbia: osce.org/serbia/135021

usgs Buckled Rails — Our #TBT today takes us back to 1964. This photo shows rails that were buckled by lateral movement of the embankment fill toward an underlying culvert which had collapsed. It was taken shortly after the March 27th, 1964 Great Alaska and Tsunami earthquake. The 9.2 earthquake occurred in the Prince William Sound region of Alaska. The earthquake lasted a full 4.5 minutes with its epicenter about 6 miles (10 km) east of the mouth of College Fiord.
This event helped confirm the theory of plate tectonics and provided firsthand insight on earthquake processes, tsunami generation, and the impacts of these phenomena on communities, both locally and across the Pacific. At several places in Port Valdez, Alaska, tsunami run-up was more than 100 feet. This great earthquake and ensuing tsunamis took 131 lives and caused about $2.3 billion in property loss (equivalent to $311 million in 1964). Learn more about this historic event and watch a video about the Great Alaska Earthquake at http://on.doi.gov/GreatAKQuake

osceorg This is the reservoir of the Nurek #hydropower station in #Tajikistan, where the #OSCE assists with the #sustainable use and sound management of #naturalresources. Natural disasters do not respect political borders and their increased frequency has only proven that #climatechange, disaster risk reduction and #security are interconnected. usgs We're back with a new #SelfieSunday...it's been awhile! This is a photo of Jessica Ball and David John from our Menlo Park, CA office. Jessica is a Mendenhall Fellow with the USGS and David is a Research Geologist. Jessica says, "Standing on the boardwalks over the Bumpass Hell hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park. David John and I were scoping out potential sites where I could conduct geophysical surveys that will quantify the volumes of water in hydrothermally altered rock. It's a very important factor to consider when evaluating where collapses, debris flows and lahars might occur on stratovolcanoes, which is the topic of my Mendenhall fellowship!" #USGS #science #volcanic #Lassen #debrisflow #naturalhazards #SciSelfieSunday 1mon

stellare At the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco close to 25.000 Earth and space scientists gather every year to discuss among others natural hazards like Earthquakes. The San Francisco area itself is prone to Earthquakes, expecting even a big one. usgs Watch Your Step — No, despite what it looks like this is not a practice course for Indiana Jones training for American Ninja Warrior. This is actually a shot from the aftermath of the June 9-10, 1972 Black Hills-Rapid City, SD flood of the Burlington-Northern Railroad west of Keystone, SD.

Nearly 15 inches of rain fell in about 6 hours near Nemo, and more than 10 inches of rain fell over an area of 60 square miles. According to the Red Cross, the resulting floods left 238 people dead and 3,057 people injured.

For more than 125 years, the USGS has monitored flow in selected streams and rivers across the U.S. The USGS collects data from more than 7,400 streamgages, many of which provide real-time data in 15-minute increments. The information is routinely used for water supply and management, monitoring floods and droughts, bridge and road design, determination of flood risk, and for many recreational activities.
