estefaniaiglesias The physical damage to Dominica is worse than first thought and the emotional toll from Tropical Storm Erika, which killed at least 20 people on the tiny Caribbean island, is substantial.
The storm has passed and was assaulting the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Friday night. It left behind swamped villages, eroded away roads and washed-away homes. #erika #erikatropicalstorm #naturaldisasters #naturalhazards

usgs Mt. Cleveland Lava Dome — This is a recent aerial photo taken on August 4, 2015 showing the lava dome within the Cleveland volcano summit crater. The volcano continues to see low-level unrest.

Cleveland is a stratovolcano (a steep-sided volcano usually conical in shape) that forms the western portion of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians. The volcano is located about 75 km (45 mi) west of the community of Nikolski, and 1500 km (940 mi) southwest of Anchorage. The most recent significant period of eruption began in February, 2001 and produced 3 explosive events that generated ash clouds as high as 39,000 ft above sea level. The 2001 eruption also produced a lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. Since then, Cleveland has been intermittently active producing small lava flows, often followed by explosions that generate small ash clouds generally below 20,000 ft above sea level. These explosions also launch debris onto the slopes of the cone producing hot pyroclastic avalanches and lahars that sometimes reach the coastline.

unfao Farmers display how seeds are stored between harvest and the next planting season to ensure food production will continue.

Bad storage practices or facilities may create a conducive environment for mould and pest proliferation that are responsible for significant losses at household level. However, these losses can be mitigated and reduced by appropriate post-harvest handling practices. Appropriate storage facilities also play an important role in reducing seed and grain losses when hazard events, like floods or cyclones, occur. When small-scale farmers implement these practices, they will be able to ensure safer grain and seed storage and reduce losses, therefore increasing their resilience to natural hazards and their ability to rapidly recover after a shock. usgs In a Flash — Flash floods rampage through towns each year causing massive destruction to homes and local businesses. Despite the impending danger, USGS employees go out against the storm to collect high flow measurements. These measurements are crucial for data collection that helps keep citizens safe and prevent future damage. Video credit: Megan Petersen, USGS.

usgs Pāhoehoe — Here's a photo from one of the recent pāhoehoe breakouts near Puʻu Kahaualeʻa in Hawaii. The dark flakes on the surface are bits of crust from the underlying flow that get stuck to the front of the newer flow, and end up on the top surface as the nose of the new flow inflates.

Sinkholes — Sinkholes affect structures as well as many types of supporting infrastructure such as buried utilities lines seen here. More than 110 sinkholes formed in the Dover area of Florida during a freeze event in January 2010. Ground water levels dropped to record-setting lows as farmers pumped water to irrigate their plants for protection from the cold temperatures. The sinkholes destroyed homes, roads and sections of cultivated areas.
