stretch_corleone First on the list of albums celebrating 16 years today is The Love Movement, the fifth and (as of this writing) final full-length release from A Tribe Called Quest. Much like Beats, Rhymes And Life before it, this joint is a decent album overall but underwhelming when compared to the group's first three albums (all hip hop classics). Q-Tip and Phife Dawg are entertaining enough but sound considerably less inspired and compelling on here, and a lot of the songs just sort of sound the same. The beats (mainly self-produced, with additional help from the late, great J Dilla) are good but rather sparse and simple, and the welcome guest features include Busta Rhymes, Redman, Noreaga, Mos Def and more. The Love Movement's real saving grace, however, comes in the form of SIX rare and/or previously unreleased bonus tracks tacked on to the end. The most notable of these are the "Scenario" remix (which is just as good as the original, if not better!) and "Hot Sex" (which originally appeared on the Boomerang soundtrack), both from 1992. Again, this isn't a bad album by any means; I think a good amount of the disappointment factor stems from the fact that this was Tribe's breakup album and they could have ended things on a more satisfying note. They have reunited for live shows (I saw them at Rock The Bells in 2010 and they were AMAZING) and even put out a single with Erykah Badu in 2003 ("I.C.U. (Doin It)") in the years since this joint's release, but I don't know if we'll ever see another album from them anytime soon. I sure hope so, though. With so much potential and chemistry within the group as well as support from their many connections within the industry, Tribe could totally make one hell of a comeback one day. 10h
