travellerthor Astronaut Charlie Walker, payload specialist for STS-41-D, STS-51-D, and STS-61-B. He was the first non-governmental person to fly in space! Living proof that if you dream it, you can do it. #space #astronaut #nasa #shuttle #spaceshuttle #orbit #earth #sts #ksc #kennedyspacecenter #work 7min

astrophysics_ Sometimes galaxies pass so close to each other they actually interact, and sometimes collide. These are own as interacting galaxies, and they are absolutely stunning. The antennae galaxy above is an example of an interacting galaxy.
When galaxies collide, however, they don't actually collide, a better word would actually be merging galaxies. Because since the space between stars within a galaxy is so great it's extremely unlikely that any stars will actually collide during a galactic collision. When two galaxies collide sometimes they don't have enough momentum to keep going, so they fall back in on each other and begin to merge into a single galaxy, usually an elliptical galaxy. If a much larger galaxy collides with a much smaller galaxy, the larger galaxy will literally "swallow" the smaller galaxy. The larger galaxy will pretty much stay intact, meaning that it will likely look the same as it did before the collision.
A collision between two or more galaxies can take millions to billions years. Through this time they will be locked in kind of gravitational "dance." Also don't forget to like my Facebook page, there's a link to it in my bio.

theartuner Katja Novitskova's Mars Potential (cat), 2015 is our #artworkoftheday

Katja Novitskova’s exploration of the human condition and the #digital landscape has taken her to #mars , where #scientific discoveries are being made in the dim light of a #martian #sunset . Mars Potential (cat) is part of a series of work that was first shown at Novitskova’s solo #exhibition ‘Spirit, Curiosity and Opportunity’ – a title that takes its name from three of the robotic rover missions deployed by #nasa in the exploration of Mars. High-resolution images captured by the rovers on Mars are collaged with disproportionately sized, cutout images of animals from the artist’s previous ‘Approximations’ series (2012 – ongoing). Here, a #cat – that most ubiquitous of Internet searches – stares out from the fossilised, desert landscape of the red planet. Taken from generic search engines and then affixed to aluminium display stands, the flat pictures of animals became three-dimensional – the perfect prop for a visitor #selfie that is then posted back into the Internet’s ocean of signs, returning the images to their free-floating source.

benjammin_rogers This is the business end of a Saturn 5 rocket. Upright it is taller than a thirty story building. At peak burn, it ran at 32 million horsepower a second. This is the rocket that put men on the moon. It was originally designed to carry a thermonuclear payload anywhere in the world. To this day it is the most powerful machine humans have ever created. It was one of the most awe inspiring things I've ever seen. #nasa #saturnv #capecanaveral #kennedyspacecenter #sunset 20min
