go_whales Species of the week! This week is the Ocean Sunfish or Mola mola. They are the largest bony fish in the world and an average adult can weigh up to 2200 pounds! (1000kg) They are characterized by having a very flat body with almost no tail and long dorsal and ventral fins. Oftentimes they are seen "sunning" themselves after a deep dive, laying on their side on the surface of the water. They mostly consume jellyfish but they can also eat squid, crustaceans, small fish and eel grass. While animals such as sea lions, killer whales and sharks do eat them, they are host to many parasites making them a poor food choice. Some cultures consider sunfish a delicacy, but often the flesh can be toxic due to the amount of parasites living in the fish.
