a_godless_universe Newtons 3 laws of motion.
Isaac Newton was an English scientist who was born in December 1624 and died March 1726. He is regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time. Newton is best known for his 3 laws of motion, his discovery of the gravitational constant, and the development of calculus.
Newton's first law states that an object in motion will remain in motion, and an object at rest will stay at rest, unless the object is acted upon by an outside first. For example if we have a rock in empty space moving at 5 m/s in some direction X (meters per second) then it will continue moving at 5 m/s in direction X forever. However if on it's path there is a planet, the force of the planets gravity can affect the direction and speed of the rock.
Newton's second law states that the vector of the external forces F on an object is equal to the mass m of that object multiplied by the acceleration a of the object: F = ma. Force is measured in Newtons, and a newton is the unit of mass (kg) over the unit of acceleration (m/s^2). Newton's third law simply states that for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction. This may sound strange but in fact when you push your hand up against the wall, the wall is pushing back against you. This force is called the normal force and it is always perpendicular to the surface that the force is being applied to. So if I push down on a vertical table, the normal force will push horizontally or upwards.
Problems:
If I have a 5 kg ball and I apply a 20 Newton force to it, what is it's acceleration?
If I have a crow bar that weighs 3000g and I throw it at 5m/s what is the force I applied. (Hint be careful with your units. Mass needs to always be converted to kg)
Bonus: if I weigh 3500g and I'm on a random planet. If my total force is 150 newtons what is the planets gravity? Hint: since gravity is an acceleration it can be interchanged with the a in F=ma to get F=mg
If a 45kg object is left on a table, and gravity on earth is 9.8m/s what is the normal force acting against the object. Use F=mg as well as Newton's third law.
