_peytoncooper_ Been so caught up recently that I complete forgot to post some history. Many people believe that the first attempt to create a stealth flying wing jet bomber originated with the American B-2 Spirit Jet Bomber, but it actually originated in Nazi Germany during WWII. Designed by brothers Reimar and Walter Horten, the Horten 229 looked like a plane straight out of a science fiction magazine when compared to other planes in the 1940's. Built to meet Herman Görings call for a Light Jet Bomber to carry 1,000kg (2,200lbs), go as far as 1,000km (620mi) with a speed of 1000kph (620mph), many aircraft companies submitted proposals including the Horten Brothers. Although Jet engines could provide all of the three things above, they were fuel hungry as seen on Me 262's and Ar 234's and jet fuel was hard to come by late in the war. The Horten's, however, came up with the ingenious idea of having a plane lacking all control surfaces to decrease drag to improve range, which also gave it the ability to reduce radar detection in 1940's as recent studies have shown. Made from mixed materials, the Ho 229 was a mix of welded steel tubing and wooden wing spars, glued together with a charcoal and sawdust mixture giving it that now stealthy look and was powered by 2 Junkers Jumo 004 engines which were also used on all other Nazi Jets. After approving the Horten's proposal to start building the aircraft, the German Air Ministry order two 30mm Mk 103 cannons to give it an offensive fighter role, and after a simulated "dogfight" with the Messerschmitt 262, the Ho 229 outperformed it by a landslide. Work on the plane continued until the last weeks of WWII, when American Troops discovered the Horten 229 and a Horten Glider undergoing final assembly in Gothaer Waggonfabrik in Fredichroda, which was a surprise to the workers who were told the Allies were well over 100mi away. The sole surviving example of the Ho 229, which is the only surviving German Jet Prototype is currently awaiting restoration in the Smithsonians NASM Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. 3h
