  •   wallah @joanna Can't thank you enough for the kind words, Jo. Don't give missing things a second thought. It's so hard to keep up with things on IG that it happens to us all. I'm just glad you swing by for a visit today and loaned your keen eye to my recent (and somewhat sporadic) posts. 12mon

wallah Daruma otoshi - Ginza style
****************************
The year-end window displays at Wako Department Store rarely disappoint, and this one is a lot of fun. To my eye, this single installation combines three elements of the local culture. Firstly, 2015 will be the year of the sheep by the Chinese zodiac, and that is represented here. Secondly, the stacked discs and hammer knocking out one of them represents the game of "daruma otoshi". And thirdly, the white discs that comprise the body loosely resemble "kagami mochi", a traditional new year's decoration made of rice cakes stacked upon each other.

  •   wallah @agnesspaak2011 Thank you very much, Agnès! 1y
  •   wallah @hanakai2001 It is a lot of fun. There's also another variation in the larger (wider) window with four or five sheep. You should check it out! 1y
  •   elnon66 Fascinating image and with the background information, it all comes together like a visual cultural jigsaw puzzle!! Thanks, Alan!! 1y
  •   tessfra A very special image indeed !! Love it !! Your informations are so precious to understand all the meanings. Thanks you dear Alan 1y
  •   wallah @elnon66 Thank *you*, Michael!! 1y
  •   wallah @tessfra Thanks much, Tess! I'm glad the cultural context wasn't too tedious. (There are English and French entries in Wikipedia for both "daruma otoshi" and "kagami mochi", if you are curious to read them.) 1y
