matthewkfirpo Color & Cold | Moria Refugee Camp, Lesvos, Greece // Ahmad, just 16 and with something of James Dean about him, explains in near-perfect English (as learned from watching Hollywood movies, no less) that leaving your entire life behind is hard, but it's harder still when you're responsible for two younger siblings, your mother, and a babe-in-arms. After losing his father first to Assad's conscriptions, and then a stray rocket blast on the front lines, Ahmad feels he must bear the burden of getting his family West. We sit at his temporary campfire of cardboard and trash, and he doesn't complain, not even once - he just shares his story, because he's finally found someone who will listen. And for people like Ahmad, people in his position, that means a great deal.
We've returned to the United States and have begun the incredible process of editorial on our film, and sorting the images for our photo stories. Thank you all for following along, I'll continue to share stories and images from Greece as the film moves forwards - and now we prepare for our next expedition just days away. Stay tuned and thanks for reading! #RefugeProject

A few days ago eleven children drowned at sea. Read below to discover the heartbreaking reason why so many refugees are not surviving the short boat ride to safety from war... "Today I was told 1 in a 100 of these life jackets are real. The other 99 are full of material that actually absorbs water and becomes a weight that sinks the person wearing the jacket. It is a horrific nightmare. Trusting refugees trying to do what is best for their families unknowingly purchase fake life jackets from vendors in Turkey. So far in 2016, nearly 400 people have drowned to death attempting to make the short six mile journey from the shores of Turkey to the Greek islands. The death toll continues to rise weekly.

I am standing on top of the "life jacket graveyard" on a hillside outside Molyvos, a city in northern Lesvos, Greece trying to take in the never ending obstacles that face these families on their long journey to escape war. The "life jacket graveyard" is full with nearly a million jackets and is approx 12 ft high x 150 ft wide x 150 long." emilydtuttle A tiny person got separated from her special friend last week at the camp, and when we found him, I imagined the things this loyal companion has seen.

It's intriguing what people choose to bring with them on this journey. If you're leaving your home, probably forever, and you can only take what you can carry, what do you grab?

Photos of family left behind in a war zone, an intricate scarf woven by her grandmother, a stack of business cards from a lost career, three toy cars.
Some of us have closets, basements, and storage units full of keepsakes. But when you have to carry your world on your back, the story of your life lives only in your memories.
The people next to you become more important than any possession, because only they remember where you came from. Your shared memories are the last piece you'll ever have of home.

ariellegallione I am so fortunate to have someone like @sirbruceleroy in my life, who (without me even asking) lent me his F5 so I could have a go at shooting some film while in Greece. Looking through these scans has my heart feeling some type of way, and I can't really put it into words that would make any sense.

internationalmedicalcorps I traveled with the #refugees from #Lesbos to #Athens on a commercial overnight ferry. The trip takes roughly 10 hours and reaches the main port in Athens just after 6 am. Here refugees stream off the ferry to find buses that take them north to the #Macedonia border, the next country that they will pass through on their way to #Germany and other destination countries.

@InternationalMedicalCorps is also working in to provide primary health care to refugees at a train station in #Serbia. I hope you’ll follow me on my assignment in #Sid, Serbia—find me at @jessegiddings.

actionaiduk The #sun might shine during the day, but at #night temperatures on the #Greek island of #Lesvos are falling to single digits. #Pregnant #women and tiny #babies are amongst the most vulnerable #refugees. They have survived long and dangerous #journeys to get to Lesvos, but they are still struggling to keep #warm this #winter.

namhun_sung 유민의 땅 2 (The Unrooted 2)

internationalmedicalcorps In #Lesbos, I traveled with the @InternationalMedicalCorps and #Praksis paramedic team when they went out to meet a raft of approximately 50 #refugees arriving from #Turkey. It is an emotional sight, with people of all ages and nationalities piling out of the dinghy after having spent three or four hours on the cold, black waters of the Aegean.

These life jackets were all that was left behind after they carried whatever little belongings they brought with them onto a bus that takes them to a site where they register before moving onto Athens by ferry.

The paramedic team is on standby 24 hours a day, monitoring the southern coastline of Lesbos providing first aid along with dry clothes, emergency blankets, and other immediate support. Because people often arrive cold and wet, #hypothermia is currently a big risk and the focus of these #firstresponders to prevent as soon as people arrive.
