rhiannonhitt Kaikoura coastal path, New Zealand. Like marble. I still don't understand how one country can be so beautiful. 10min

Anyone who can ride a bike should do this ride, so much to see and the track itself is great to ride on- mainly flat and nice gravel with occasional tunnel thrown in!

mummykinz This mighty trunk belongs to the Matriarch Puriri tree on the Tui Domain walking track in Te Aroha. The trunk measures about 4mtrs in girth. The Puriri is a dense and solid wood that once was used widely by early settlers for fenceposts and railway sleepers as,untreated,it would last often 50 yrs or more. Puriri groves were often considered tapu (sacred) by the Maori people through their use as burial grounds. Infusions made from Puriri leaves were used to wash the body of the deceased and the leaves were, and still are, fashioned into coronets worn at Tangi (funerals) or sprigs of leaves were carried by mourners. The Puriri has tubular shaped flowers ranging from pale to dark rose pink to dark red rose. Both the flower and the resulting hardcored fleshy fruit provide food for native birds all year round. Luckily on my walk yesterday I encountered no other trampers or they would have found me prostrate under this living wonder listening to and watching our large native pigeon (Kereru) and Tui foraging and arguing with each other! Not sure what I would have said if anyone had happened by!!!
